Electronic instruments (synths mostly but EWI and electric guitars and electric violins also count as electronic) were first allowed in 2009. Amped brass also became allowed in 2009. Not sure if it was a new rule or a clarification, but I think it was stated last year that during the preshow corps can use anything they want in the pit including woodwinds.
