arthur feely Posted September 17, 2019 Share Posted September 17, 2019 Hello to all the professional speculators and guessers who were never close or part of either the Caballeros or Muchachos. The Muchachos were created to give area youth a drum corps experience. It was not a Caballeros product. Anyone who thinks it is sound corps building to wait almost 10 years for abunch of 12 year olds to become eligible at age 21 for the Caballeros just doesn't know what they're talking about. Who waits 10 years to recruit? Do you really think these little raw kids were prodigies or dwarf Mozarts? The fact is the Muchachos were not liked by the Sr. corps who felt that their reputation and legacy were being stolen by people who did not earn or deserve it. Over the years, VERY FEW Muchachos migrated to the Caballeros. Some SR corps members helped with teaching basics in the early years. Both instruction staffs were different people and independent. Costello helped ocassionally but not as director. John McAuliffe was incarcerated at formation time and not part of the jr corps until their last few years as a very challenged business manager with poor judgement and decisions that were fatal to the jr corps. The wizard who said that "Muchachos were gods" and compared them to the Beatles, insulted everybody by equating the Caballeros to being 'like the Osmonds" is an uninformed and self-deluded wannabe trying to be taken seriously for the first time in his life. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not in the same class as better NJ corps (Garfield, SAC, St. Lucy and later on Bridgemen) "Muchachos 1960's": We (Conn Royal Lancers) competed against the Muchachos many times and found them to be a very good junior corps. This is 1964-1966 time frame. They were in the mix with St Raphael's Buccaneers, Bridgeport PAL Cadets (Our two cross town rivals), St Patricks Cadets, Selden Cadets, Magnificent Yankees, and NY Kingsmen that were all very competitive junior corps that were nipping at the heels ( and occisionally upsetting) the league leaders of that era. They had an outstanding all male color guard that won many regional championships, and I believe their CG captain later becam DM of the Hawthorne Caballeros. Great memories of a great junior corps.
