oldbandguy
Dress Rehearsal is tonight (Thursday) in the stadium at Whitewater. I've had the pleasure of watching the corps all week. Drum corps fans are going to love this show! The opener "Sound Piece For Jazz Orchestra" reminds me very much of "classic" Blue Devils jazz. Watch for some terrific guard work in this production. It doesn't take long for you to know this is another great Madison horn line, but what knocks me out is what Colin McNutt has done with the drum line. Extremely musical at ALL times, lots of notes and power when needed. The ballad is very nice and again displays that rich Madison sound we've come to know. From the ballad, the drum line goes into a McNutt original they call "Wave" and, although short, is cranking out at well over m.m. = 200 near the end. Be sure to check out the pit transition into the closer "Malaga"...very cool. I predict "Malaga" will be THE CLOSER of 2004. It's powerful, exciting, and hold on to you seat for the final chords! And yes, there is a rotating company front! Soloists are fantastic. This is a MADISON signature piece! This is one show you will not want to miss. Jim Anello
I made the trip out to Whitewater. This may be the only time I ever get to park right next to the stadium. Well, except for Philly in 1975, but that's another story. For a good portion of the night, the corps worked on transitions from one section to the next. They finished up with a full show run through for the 100+ staff and fans in attendance. Old Band Guy is right - the drum line seems to have improved greatly. The snares get featured a lot. Quite a change from a year ago. Gotta say it - the B Flat horns sound fine. The staff made a point of complimenting the corps on the sound they put out. The first thing I thought of as I watched their opener is Imitation is the Highest Form of Flattery. Madison opens witha single snare solo, al la 2003 Blue Devils. The guard continues to improve - lots of equipment and body work has already been built into the show. They wear all black. I'll be curious if fans think the uniform needs some accents. During Malaga, the corps trots out two signature moves in bang-bang fashion. First, the horn line does a company front moving east to west from the 30 to the 50(I think). Then they go right into the center wheel from 1995. This will be sweeeet once it is cleaned. Last, if you're going to a Midwest show, bring bug repellant! With all the rain we've had lately, the mosquitoes are terrible! Thank goodness no small children were carried off.
