uncle z
I don't know if this has been covered before, but can any "old school" horn players explain and fill in the history of that noise the 1974 Kingsmen make after Symphony Fantastique?? Sounds like the whole horn line is blowing air through the horns and is definitely KEWL!!!!! B) TY, Z

Russellrks
Yep, it was air being blown through the horns, but I remember it as one 4 ct. blast. I always thought it was done as a chilling effect to get you in the mood for the "Exorcist."
ffernbus3
I'm told by those Kingsmen that marched that year that the reason for that 4 count blowing of air through the horns at the end of the Berlioz was in response to a brass judge ticking them for soggy horns , ie, too much spit gurgle, so the entire corps emptied their horns at the same time......still one of my favorite sounds in recorded drum corps history.....it fits the music, for one thing, and for another is a wonderfully creative use of another "sound" that can be made on a brass instrument. I listen to this show a lot --actually a few times a week on the way to surf-- and it's great to crank up the stereo in the truck to "11" just to hear the "wooosh!" Still amazes me how clever that was! RON HOUSLEY 67 AK Lead Bari Squad
