A tech of mine from the summer who aged out with BD in '05 said that he spent roughly $20,000 to march there. It was his age out year and he figured "what the hell, I may as well go for it." The tuition was only a small part of the cost; he had to buy the plane tickets to travel to Cali so frequently, and since BD doesn't provide housing during everydays he had to rent an apartment. Not to mention that was the year that the corps traveled to Europe so he of course got some souveniers.

He said that if he had been able to return as a vet, he wouldn't have needed to pay nearly the amount he did his rookie year, since he wouldn't have had to attend so many camps.

Troopers Tuition Page

This is from the Troopers wesite with a breakdown of tuition, and camp fees...

So if you add the tour fees and the camp fees it comes out to $1,480

Another way of looking at the cost of doing drum corps is to compare it to the cost of not doing drum corps. Add up all the days that you are with your corps, maybe about 75 days counting camps and tour. It seems that the average cost being mentioned on this thread is $2000 - $2500. Let's go with $2500.

That's about $33 per day to pay. Now, how many people live on less than $33 per day to cover food and housing? I know, most DCI members are college students, so many of you are saying, "ME!" But you have to count the money that others (parents, student loans, grants, scholarships, etc) are paying for you everyday too.

Not only do you get your food & housing covered for this price. You get countless hours of instruction from people that would normally charge you $25 - $60 an hour for private lessons. Granted drum corps is not a private lesson, but over the course of a season, you have the opportunity to learn a great deal about your particular field - brass, percussion, guard, visual.

You are also getting the best education possible as future educators in the marching arts. In addition, you can apply what you learn from drum corps to any field that you decide to go into. Most dc vets will say that their corps experience played a big role in forming the person that they became later in life. Many continue on long after they "age-out" either as instructors or they become involved with an All-Age drum corps, (such as the Buccaneers! (shameless plug  )

Of course, none of this changes the reality that coming up with $2000 - $3000 is very difficult for most 17-21 year olds, but it is well worth the cost if you can make it happen.

Dan, I agree with you. However, I feel the spirit of my mother taking over me and she wants to say that why spend money when you can make much more than $33 a day working a job, heck, why not two jobs?

That's why I couldn't march junior corps when I was of age. I wouldn't have been allowed to march even DCA back then because I had to work.

Drum corps does provide a great experience. I wish that more kids who come from marginal backgrounds could be able to participate. I'll argue that those kids would get more benefits from the experience than kids from good middle-class homes.

for the corps that have camp fees you should note how many camps this applies to and give a total camp fee cost. ie Troopers have a $40 camp fee which applies to 7 camps thus their camp fee total is $280. this makes the troopers total $1,480

The bluecoats for comparison have the $50 Audition fee, $1,300 for the summer, and 6 camps at $60 ($360 total). so Bluecoats total fee would be $1,710

This was something I started to do while in a lull in classes. Sifting through each site for what info I was able to post was fairly time consuming. Here's hoping others can take this and work from it. Also, some corps charge a camp fee for only some of the camps. For example, I believe Mandarins only charge a camp fee until accepted as a member.

Pioneer has 6 camps at $30=$180 for camps, $1200 for summer, $60 Audition fee and $125 for uniform stuff. Total to march would be $1565. This does not include the $50 equipment deposit or any credits for recruitment, bingo, etc..

So far we have:

Troopers-$1,480

Pioneer-$1,565

Bluecoats-$1,710

(These are, I believe, the three "least expensive" corps to march this summer, based on the figures available so far.)
