1972 DVD set - UPDATE

Recommended Posts

Many of you have been awaiting news on the long-overdue 1972 DVD set of the first DCI finals. I bring very good news - a big hurdle was finally overcome as copyright/synchronization permission has been satisfied. So now, we're scrambling to get this thing out in time for Christmas. The set is being released by Drum Corps World, with the permission of DCI.

For those of you unfamiliar with this project, it is a restoration of open-reel videotapes discovered two years ago that were made on finals night in 1972 in Whitewater by the Troopers. 8 of the 12 finalist corps are included (the tapes containing the other four corps are missing). This and other historic finds from the Troopers stack of old video reels were restored and are planned for release. The first release is this 2-DVD set. I had already previously posted a link to my website describing the restoration: http://www.hardbat.com/PROD/VideoTech.html

Securing copyright was very costly, and DCW will need to sell a lot of sets to break even. But it is such a major artifact in the history of drumcorps that both Steve and I agreed it is worth the effort.

The DCW website is not quite ready to accept orders -- an announcement should be forthcoming on that in the next few days. And Steve is still revising the cover art. But I did prepare a short teaser which you can view on YouTube. To be extra-safe, all of the clips on the YouTube demo utilize only music that is in the public domain:

Click on "view in high quality" at the lower right corner of the video window for best results. Enjoy!

Please don't contact Steve asking when he can accept orders - it will only add to the delay. I will post an announcement here, so keep your eye on the forum!

I can't wait until this is available ...

Were these from one of those 1/4" portable VCRs, or are they a professional format?

missing tapes - Cavaliers, Muchachos, Des Plaines Vanguard, and ironically the Troopers.

I wonder how many other corps were recorded from that era? I understand this is a monumental effort and certainly the market is limited. Somehow, thank you does not seem appropriate.

Who are the all of the corps on the DVD (crossing fingers!!!!)?

Never mind....I found the missing in this thread....

In the meantime, I'm still hoping that the missing four performances (i.e., the two missing reels) turn up in a basement somewhere. That would be Cavaliers, Troopers, Muchachos, and DesPlaines. Anyone out there have any leads? (they would look like Sony reel-to-reel audio tapes but are actually video).
