Joe Salvatore Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 In honor of the late George Bonfiglio, during work all day yesterday I listened to all the finals performances of the 27th Lancers. One thing, however, caught my attention; 1974. I turns out they finished 20th that year. I was shocked as they placed the best of all eastern drum corps in 1972 (4th) and 1973 (7th). Also, in 1975 they returned very strong finishing 4th. I'd love to get more information about that 1974 season of 27th. Anyone have anything to share? Quote
Northern Thunder Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 The 1974 Lancers were EXTREMELY young, many 13, 14 year-olds. The '73 corps had tons of vets (some whom had been with the corps from the 1960s) age out going into the '74 season. Throw in the fact that these young kids (many who had NEVER marched before) were presented with a contemporary rock concept in the middle of their show, as opposed to the brass rock (Chicago) that they had done in the early 1970s, and let's just say things didn't quite make it on the field (33rd in total percussion and 24th in brass). It was the music execution captions that killed them. GE wasn't all that bad (9th, 16th, 13th in marching, percussion and horns). Quote

It seems those days of wild swings in placements from year to year for a given corps are pretty much gone. Fran Quote
Donny Drum Corps Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 There were many very good corps in close competitve range that summer that flip flopped around with each other in the early season. Late season the more mature coprs pulled away slightly but still great competitons from 10-20 place... Donny-Purple Lancers 1974 Quote
