  1. Carolina Crown uses Bach 3C and equivalent mouthpieces.
  2. Crown had 80 brass in 2013, and does again in 2014... They had a few brass players play percussion in 2013.
  3. To answer the question, yes people have marched at Cavaliers then Crown. Some people have marched Crown then Cavaliers.
  4. I started drum corps in 2004, with a basic cell phone. I have been teaching with an iPhone the past 2 summers. It is unbelievable how much easier this device has made it to communicate information within the corps. Ordinarily, we would all have a meeting time to go listen to tapes. Many instructors now use iPads in rehearsal to teach drill or music. It is really pretty impressive.
  5. I think it carries more weight with percussionists and color guard than hornline members. It's amazing how those sections will follow an instructor around, or even go to a corps that traditionally places lower just to be taught by someone. It might happen in the brass world some, but it seems like most of those members go to corps because they've always wanted to march there. Some people have grown up always wanting to be in Cadets, BD, Cavaliers... However, a lot of drummers might go to SCV just because of Paul Rennick.
  6. To be honest, I really feel that interest of marching music in America is on the decline. Yes, WGI is thriving with winterguards and more and more winter drumlines. However, the average marching band, atleast in Indiana is shrinking. Whereas in the smaller classes there would be 80-100 in a band, there are MANY bands with only 40-50 total. Even the larger bands that packed 300+ are down in the mid to low 200's. The same has happened with drum corps. The death of many smaller corps has built a disconnect between the average person and the drum corps community. There might be 1 or 2 drum corps in a state now that used to have one for each region or community. Something needs to happen to keep this alive, or I see this activity start to fizzle out completely. With rising costs for arrangers, drill writers, copyrights... It's just not worth the investment at some point.
  7. I quote my old visual caption head "You might be one of those people who say 'Hey, I don't burn!' You might not burn, but you DO get skin cancer."
  8. Picking up Jim Moore is HUGE... Madison Scouts have hired the Dream Team.
  9. When I've done jazz running, it isn't about "running" or taking huge steps. It is all about the toe-lead look. I have taught and marched this at a 6-5. The level change is less in the smaller steps and we focus on lengthening the leg for each stride.
  10. Between ISSMA, BOA, and DCI, I marched at the RCA Dome 26 times. I am going to miss it a lot. A lot of memories (good and not so great) there. On the bright side, Lucas Oil Stadium is out of control awesome.
  11. I marched Crown in years that we had both King and Yamaha brass lines. I have played on both King and Yamaha mellophones and trumpets. When we made the switch to Yamaha, they allowed us to try a variety of trumpet models that different corps already use. It was amazing difference going from a SCV horn to a Cavalier horn. I don't think that either one was bad, they just naturally played better in the style each group went for. I really like Yamaha brass. I think they hold up extremely well and the sound quality has improved greatly in the past 5 years. If I got a deal on a brass line here for my high school band, I would take it in a heart beat.
  12. I aged out of Crown in 2007. At Atlanta, I was a part of the big triangle rotation where a bunch of members got taken out and were on the turf right on the Falcons helmet. Trashed my horn. I played lead trumpet and the end of the show was mostly high C's. This was good because none of my valves could move and that was the last I ever saw of that horn...
  13. Yes, he used to go by Tommy Feagin, then he was T. Andre Feagin, and now he is Andre Feagin.
  14. I went to and taught at Avon High School. It was pretty wild with Matt Harloff (Crown Brass Caption Head) and Jay Webb (DCI Judge) as the directors and then Joey Wever (former visual caption head at G-Men, Phantom, Crown), Richard Hinshaw (former Crown vis. caption head), Danny Wiles (current visual designer with Cadets), and Jeff Queen running around on the field. I didn't really know what drum corps was as a freshman, but I just really knew that the band practiced really hard. Now the have a few more DCI instructors on the staff, but I'd have to say that when I was actually in it, I really didn't know any different and it was only after I started marching corps that I was like "Wow... we had a pretty rockin staff in high school!"
