Scouts Announce Drum Major & Horn Sergeant

The Madison Scouts are pleased to name John Lee as the 2010 drum major and Sean Phelan as the horn sergeant.

John Lee has recently moved to the Indianapolis area from California where he was a double major in music and business at the University of California, San Diego. John began marching drum corps in 2008 when he was the drum major of the Blue Devils “B” open class corps. In 2009, John became the assistant drum major of the 2009 DCI World Champion Blue Devils. This past fall John worked with several Indiana marching bands and is in the process of transferring to a local university to continue his college education

“It is such a tremendous honor to be selected as the Madison Scouts drum major,” said John. “My experiences have led to me this opportunity, but the Scouts have something unbelievably special…to be able to say that I’ve been a Madison Scout is beyond words.”

2010 marks the fourth year as a Scout for Sean Phelan who has been a member of the euphonium and baritone sections since the 2007 season. He is currently in his third year at the University of Wisconsin Madison and is pursuing a degree in music education with an auxiliary major in mathematics.

“I feel tremendously privileged to have the opportunity to once again march in the horn line of the Madison Scouts,” said Sean. “The standards have been raised this year. We are going to continue to work hard, enjoy our time as Scouts, and never stop demanding better of ourselves as musicians, performers, and men.”

“We expect a lot from our on-field leadership,” said Corps Director Dann Petersen. “John and Sean have both the talent and experiences to lead the 2010 corps in a very positive manner. Their leadership will set the tone for the upcoming season.”

The Madison Scouts continue their work on the 2010 program during the next winter camp on January 15-18 in Bloomington, IN. Select positions are still available in the horn line and front ensemble. Guard members will continue to audition via video throughout the winter months before joining the corps in April. For more information, go to the audition page at www.MadisonScouts.org.

When was the last time the Scouts had a rookie drum major? And by rookie I mean his first year with the Scouts. I was always under the impression the Scouts chose someone with a few Scout years under his belt to be the man up front.

I don't get that at all.

To my knowledge, the Scouts have always appointed

vets to the DM position. I wonder why they have decided

to go this direction. At any rate, welcome John to the Madison Scouts,

and congrats Sean on becoming Horn Sergeant.

Got to like the possibility that they took the decision they believed best for the corps even if it wasn't how past administrations might have handled it.

I don't care if he's from Austria and his name is Wolfgang Mozart. If he didn't spend at least one active year in the corps in some capacity then I would look elsewhere within the corps. Rookie DM's should be outlawed by an Act of Congress.

Thanks Glory. It's one of my better pieces

in that series.

From news.madisonscouts.org:

I know that the Scouts have always promoted from within, but...what you have here is one of the best DM's in the world.

To come from the World Champion Blue Devils to the Scouts should be a smooth transition for John Lee. I personally

think the Scouts made a wise decision.
