The reason that I joined the Scouts were because the uniforms were cool & the Scouts were cool. Crowns uni is not cool. It's Terrible. For God sakes, pick a great uniform & stick with it. These are brutal, as are the Cavies guard costumes.
That's a nicer way of saying what I was going to say. Suffice to say that I really wish that brass & percussion people would have more influence in today's drum corps. It is all about the music after all. The current uniform & show design trends are awful. I really hope that this years Scouts show will influence the future direction of drum corps.
I marched with a guy in the Snare line who couldn't read a lick of music. He learned the show by ear, & the other guys in the line would help him. His greatest difficulty was getting the sticking right. Throughout the season we were frequently helping him get the sticking right. This guy was one of the fumiest guys I ever marched with so no one cared!
I don't ever recall Scottish or Patriotic shows "taking a ton of heat". Kilts? 27? Madison? I don't ever remember anyone criticizing these shows. The Bridgemen & the circus shows are another story. Yea...many drum corps fans were upset about the circus.
Then please explain why there were 1000+ drum & bugle corps in the 60's & 70's, when tradition was in vogue & color guards wore the same uniform as the rest of the corp?
Actually, the current trend of drum corps isnt working. Corps unis were better in 1980. Corps today wear cheap looking polyester costumes, not uniforms.
