  1. The way the Cavaliers do show design may not be the "wave of the future", but I don't really want it to be. I like that The Cavaliers set themselves apart by giving us concept shows. Now keep in mind, just because it's a concept show, doesn't mean there isn't a story there. As far as comparing shows, The Cavaliers were by far the better package. You can't compare corps by Visual or Music alone. Now don't get me wrong, I have drum corps on my i pod. I have alot of different corps, but I love listening to Cavaliers music. The is melody there, I don't care what anyone says. But I digress. Comparing this year's total packages of The Cavaliers Vs. The Phantom Regiment: The Cavaliers deserved first for many reasons. But, if you're going from a strictly design standpoint, The Cavaliers still win. Why? Because, while PR's show did have somewhat of a story line and thematical elements, it was limited to the guard. You take out Phantom's guard and you're thematic elements are gone besides "low, minor chords = evil, bright, major chords = good". Plus, what if you took out phantom's music as well? Does any of their drill speak for their show? I couldn't find any, and I love studying show design. So if you had to boil my argument down, I'd say this: The Cavaliers make sure that their masseage is conveyed in every asspect of their design, which is, by definition, solid disign. The Phantom regiment does not convey their message in every asspect of their design, but rather, lean on one or two specific elements to get the job done (I.E. the guard).
  2. I find a combonation of speakers works. I have a pair of Infinity 4 1/2 (with tweeters, anout 400 for pair) in the front doors and 6 1/2 (about 500 per pair) in the back. That covers the brass sound great, but to get those sweet bass drum runs down to the 5, I have a 12" sub by punch. I had all this installed since I'm a music major and wanted to hear a full spectrum a of music genres, but it's worked out amazingly well for drum corps. I suggest going to a car audio place and taking a CD of essential DC music. Then you can hear it played through various speaker combos at various output levels. Good luck.
  3. From what I've seen, The Cavaliers eat pretty well. Especialy when Mr. Rudnik comes on tour in Texas. He's the father of one of the guys and is also the head chef at a very nice spot in DFW. I've heard of everything froma full spread of Texas-style BBQ to Lobster sandwiches to filet minon. But he's only with them maybe a couple days. Maybe some guys who marched recently can varify these rumors. But, one thing I do know is the great "exploding chicken".
  4. his post was nothing like yours. It was the opposite.
  5. I think the intent was there. Plus, did you read any of my other responses?
  6. Great idea. Kids don't get to make decisions, parents make all the decisions for them! So wittle poopy-kins doesn't have to face the realities of the world or build character by making those big hard decisions all by thems selves....
  7. This post is much better then the previous. The last post gave me the idea that you discouraged your kids from marching because of things going on in corps that may or may not be deemed immoral. I'm glad to hear they had a choice in the matter.
  8. I had already made a response to the original poster, I made this reply in response to something another poster said.
  9. Maybe your kids could make up their own minds ...I mean, it's not like the a-moral demon that is corps produces some of the most respectable, hard-working and ethical young adults you'll ever meet.
  10. First off, the best place to find out about BD's policies would prob. be a BD forum or e-mail. Not that this isn't a lively topic, just a note. Second, everyone has to keep in mind that DC are non-profit groups, therefore they don't have to offer any services of any kind to anyone what-so-ever. As for my own personal beliefs, I think it would be wise for a drum corps to not cater to any specific religion simply because it would be near impossible to cater to every members specific religious needs. I.E. you take a van of Catholic kids to mass on sunday, what about the kid that needs to go to a Muslim or Jewish service? Where's his ride? Personal action, that's the key to having a spiritual life on tour. You know what you're getting into when you go on tour. You know you'll be dissconnected from a lot of things we have in our off-season lives...but hey, that's the life. Bring some spiritual readings on tour and take part in whatever you want on your own time.
  11. Once the State-of-the-art Cowboys stadium is built here in Arlington we can finaly bring a finals back to TEXAS!
  12. I beg to differ. I reference "The Lord of The Rings. Mvt. III. GOLLUM (Sméagol)" By Johan de meij, as just ONE of the amazing wind ensemble pieces made more colorful by the sax.
  13. 2003 Blue Devils San Antonio A Tenor players drum half falls off during the roto-tom feature. He quickly gets out of the way and gets back into the groove and on with the show. Not likely his fault...but then. Later in the show the drumline is moving down the field towards the home sideline and the same kid trips and bites the turf. (can't blame him. That "roll-out" turf is horrible.) His drum again falls off his rack on one side, but this time he can't fix it. This is where the screw up comes in. He stops where he is and tries to fix his drum. As a result he gets in the way of some drill and freaks out. The drumer then procceeds to saunter, and I do mean saunter, over towards the end zone to fix his drum. The bad goes to worse as the show ends with him STILL over around the 20 trying to fix his drum. To add insult to injury, the guy notices the show is over, casualy walks over to the final set, pulls up his drums, and stands there as if nothing had happened. I don't even know what the last 20 sets of drill looked like for BD that night. I was too busy looking at the drummer. It's one thing to have an equipment problem, but the way it was handled...wow. 2003 Cavaliers San Antonio I think I have this one on video somewheres, i'll try and post it. What started out as a simple slip, turned into one of the greatest recoverys I've ever seen. A contra player is backwards marching and falters, causing another contra to trip over him. The first contra keeps going, but the second falls. The form around him is tight and for a second it looks as if a huge pile-up is about to occur. Amazingly, the contra on the ground rolls out of harms way just as the form sets into a block. Cool, he avoided a huge mess. But to make it even better, he rolls right up into his EXACT spot as if nothing had happened!
  14. That "9/11" portion in itself was a huge mistake. It's one thing to pay homage to a tragedy. It's another thing to put it into a competative show where that homage can win you points...and soooo soon after. I remember seeing it and going "Oh that just doesn't belong..."
  15. "Any one remember the Madison cymbal player in 76 that lost his cymbal. He kept playing by hitting the other cymbal with his fist. His hand was pretty bloody by the end of the show." That kid deserves a medal.....
  16. Buy whatever u can and look for scalpers the day of. I plan on finding someone selling me some better finals seats. The reason I say this is because the limit on tickets was like 20, so scalpers will be out. TX law allows scalping at a certain distance from the venue. Good luck.
  17. This may be one of the most true but unspoken lines of thought any of the Cadets posts have seen. Perfect.
  18. Bluecoats are not pulling past The Cavaliers this year. The Bluecoat's show is getting clean, but so is the Cavalier's. The Bluecoat's will not pass because the show is nothing special. There's nothing there that makes you go, "Now this is a top 3 show!". Almost there, but not quite.
  19. 92 Star 04 Cavaliers (since when I was a freshman in highschool, I went to my director and said, "the tommorow never dies soundtrack would make a very challenging show." When I saw the 04 show announced I thought, "This is my show...this is going to be in-friggin-credable!") *flashback over* 07 Cavaliers...ageout year....
  20. Are you seriously comparing a highschool (any high school) to a division I drum corps? wow....
