  1. It said it failed, so I tried and tried, then the post showed up. Sorry for all the posts.
  2. This is an interesting discussion and it's nice to know what finally happened. I am surprised, that given the volation was caught well before DCI, that the corps was disqualified at finals. I would have thought they would have been disqualified from every show that the over-age members were in, and stripped of any titles they won at those shows. It is surprising that if the members were yanked before finals week that they were still disqualified. The article is interesting, but I find it utterly despicable that the writer attempts to blame Phantom Regiment for the disqualification, when it is NO ONE'S fault but the staff of the Bridgemen, who decided they didn't have to follow the rules. This is especially unbelievable, since you would think the Machachos and Crossmen would have really put the fear in future years - yet the Bridgemen keep the DQ streak going for three years! Complete stupidity and you reap what you sow! No one is to blame but the Bridgemen. That being said, I think the Phantom Regiment staff should have approached the Bridgemen staff first and said something like, "We know what's going on. Fix it by the next show or we'll report you." Still, it's not Phantom Regiment's responsibility to police the activity. If Bridgemen weren't breaking the rules, there would have been no violations to report. It really infuriates me because I never had the opportunity to see the Bridgemen at their competetive peak. Who knows what the future would have held for the organization if they had won DCI in 1977. Of course the judges did the right thing by making sure the Bridgemen didn't place top three, whether or not they should have. It would have been ridiculous to withhold the top 3 scores. The Bridgemen created the problem and they paid the consequences. No other corps should have had to suffer because of the rule-breaking by one. It is very unfortunate that the hard working youngsters had to suffer because of a moronic leadership! As far as SCV '89 goes - there is a BIG difference between what happened in 1977 and what happened in 1989. Knowing you're cheating (Bridgemen '77) and being the victims of fraud (SCV '89) are two completely different things. I think if you could fool the US Immigration, that fooling a Drum & Bugle Corps would be pretty simple. The Bridgemen knew they were breaking the rules. Santa Clara didn't. I am 100% certain that SCV would have never marched overage members. I was happy for them, that it was caught, before talk of disqualification surfaced. How was it discovered? Two different things SCV (innocent) vs. Bridgemen (guilty). Fair is fair, and the Bridgemen didn't play fair.
  3. I remember 1992 when SCV came to Drums on Parade, in Madison, in July. They were practicing by my house, so I went to watch. I talked to a staff member and asked him how he thought they'd fair that night (Madison and Phantom were there) and he said, "we haven't even beat BD yet!" He didn't sound too hopeful. I would get an earlier version of the Bottle Dance, if you get it on DVD. 1992 was great and it was the only year I've seen it live, but it looked better in the years where more of the guards legs were exposed. It wasn't as impressive with the legs being hidden under those long black dresses. Just my opinion..but it still was something in 1992. The crowd did go nuts. Every year, my mom says, "do you think they'll throw in the dance?" I don't think they will until the play a program where the music would fit, and it won't fit with Rimsky-Korsakov! Maybe next year!
  4. WOOHOO! I thought that might have been it! You gave a hint that the answer could be found on your website. So, I thought it had to do with something pertaining to scores, and I know my scores history, so penalities was the first place I looked. I looked at finals and there were no penalities. Then I went to 2002 and saw there were also no penalities at finals. So, I then with to SF and QF's and saw that 2003 was the only year there were no division I penalities. It is also the first time 3 corps made finals, from the South, but I think the question wasn't specific to finals.
  5. I think I am in the minority. I watched 1990-1993 Star last night and my favorites are 1990 and 1992. Most people's seem to be between 1991 and 1993. What's yours? I think 1990 was one of the greatest shows ever to grace the football field.
  6. Naw, 88 Cadets rocked! 2nd in brass, I think... They did indeed get 2nd in brass in '88 and it was a great show. I think they also got 2nd in drums that year. Brass went: 1> Devils 2> Cadets 3> Scouts 4> ? (I think Star) 5> SCV
  7. Ok - last try. It was the only time were 0.05 separated two corps - Phantom & SCV! The smallest margin between two corps ever at finals!
  8. Wait, was 2003 the first finals were no corps was penalized?
  9. 2. Two corps (Madison & Crown) jumped 6 spots from the year before? 2002: Madison 14th Crown 16th 2003: Madison 8th Crown 10th Probably not - but worth a try.
  10. Thank you for sharing your experiences and the truth concerning Suncoast. They were one of my favorite corps. Your 1986 show was one of my favorites that year - it was amazing. I still miss Suncoast very much and after hearing years of conflicting stories it is nice to know the truth. Lancerlady - I don't think they were airing dirty laundry or being disrespectful. It is a better service to tell the truth and to keep things hidden....especially concerning this subject. I've heard some crazy stories about the fold and now I know the truth.
  11. "Symphony Mediocre" - not THAT is funny. I think they lost to Scouts by like 12 points in the early season and it was like WHOA. I remembered from the year before that Phantom was always beating Scouts. Of course, we in the Jr. Scouts were so happy. That was one tough show and I give them snaps for the evolution that took place during the season. It is definitely THE most under-rated show IMHO and the best show Rockford has ever put out. It's nice to hear from a marching member. I love playing that show. It would have been 5th place, if not for the problem that Spirit, Suncoast, and Cavies were pretty #### good too.
  12. Yeah.....that's one of the only things I remember about that night after SCV was announced in 2nd...the rest is still a blur. I only remember SCV leaving the field, I remember singing Never Walk (to the crowd), but don't remember marching the encore. I don't remember leaving the field. I remember the celebration tho. Interesting note - I heard that our guard staff had most of the flags removed from the poles (out in the parking lot) and had to put them all back on for the encore!
  13. Although it's probably not my favorite (that would be SCV 2000), it was really something. Imagine hearing that, at full volume, about ten feet from your head. It was really something!
  14. This is one Phantom show that I hardly ever see talked about, so I decided to start a thread. I remember the first show of the season in '85. Phantom was a mess...a big sloppy disasterous mess. Why wouldn't they be, considering what a difficult show this was? At finals, Phantom was a huge, big, powerful, dazzling, and emotional package that just knocked my socks off and wowed me! I couldn't believe the extent to which they improved over the course of the season! The music is still my favorite that I've ever heard on the field. It was awesome! BUT - I feel it is rarely talked about for the simple fact that it got 8th place. I would bet this will always be my favorite PR show.
  15. My vote would have to go to 1985 Phantom Regiment. That is still my favorite Phantom show and what they did from the beginning of the season to the end is utterly amazing! It was a brilliant performance, a brilliant concept, and a brilliant design. Bring it back Phantom!
  16. This discussion reminds me of '89, when we had three '88 SCV guard members with us (they cut the guys for '89). One, I became very good friends with. Another (who marched Cavies before SCV) took every opportunity to say that we didn't deserve to win. He would repeatedly comment that everyone he knew in BD, agreed that SCV should have won, and we should have been third. I had to laugh this off. Seeing how BD treated SCV in June when Star was out there and within 0.8 of SCV and knowing their rivalry, I don't think even under the most extreme torture, a member of '88 BD would say SCV should have won, or us for that matter. One time - I wanted to punch his lights out. We were sitting around the gym making up drum corps trivia questions. His first one was, "who won finals last year and should have been third?" Pretty gutsy statement. The third (the Phantom from '88 and who does a #### good impression of Sandra from 227 I might add), would always rebuff the second by saying, "I was just glad we didn't get forth." He said that Gail told the corps (SCV) to watch out for us before finals that year! Those were good times....even if someone was constantly trying to take away your accomplishment! :) I don't like getting into discussions on years that I don't quite agree with (title wise), because it's hard to not take it personal when people constantly say that you didn't deserve one of the happiest moments of your life.
  17. Um, that person was me and I don't mind if you mention me. Sometimes I wish I had the vocabulary to express what I mean. Hopefully I didn't insult you too much with my comments on Madison. The first half of Madisons show was "wow!". Impressive NOT unmemorable. Now if per chance you guys didn't have the second half that was "WOW!!!", I don't think you would have won. But, you did have that awesome second half and you DID win! Just remember this was a long time ago and I can only go on what feelings and impressions I remember from way back when. I'm also not good at judging the "technical" side of a show and lack the expertice in noticing if something is more "technically difficult" than something else. I base my opinions on what I think is a clean and emotionally packed show. SCVs show was emotionally packed from beginning to end, IMHO, the best of the night. As for BDs show, I think they came into finals undefeated right? I'm wondering if you saw their show that night because I would think that you would have been with your Corps warming up. So with that in mind I would have to disagree that BD didn't have the visual. I think it was one of the most visualy enhanced shows that I remember ever seeing them do. There was just "something" missing that night and I can't put my finger on it. Maybe the term "flat" isn't accurate. If anyone else has the words for it help me out here. I know what I "felt" when I watched their show and It must be true because look where they ended up. Anyway, '88, a great year all the way around. The title could have gone to anyone and THAT makes for a memorable finals. Looks like that may be the case again this year and MAN am I excited. Good luck to everyone! No, no...I wasn't insulted in the least. I would agree that Malaguena was definitely the highlight of the show - by far. It was my favorite part too. I didn't like the opener for a long time, in fact. I didn't see anyone perform that night. I did see BD a few times during the year. The visual design was good (although not as good as the other top 6 corps - Phantom's was wonderful I might add), but it lacked difficulty and thus peaked early. I would rate SCV's as the most difficult. I can tell you that I don't think BD's performance (on the dvd) is anything less than spectacular, powerful, and awesome! It's one of my favorite BD shows. They did come in undefeated, and we beat them by 1.2 in Semis. SCV's show, I'm sure was emotional, based on the dvd. I didn't see it live. I remember them turning towards us, and blasting Music of the Night, before they passed in review. It sent chills down my spin and so does the memory of it. Just gorgeous. Everything about that show was spectacular. It was a great year - I love the entire top 12. Suncoast rocked, Spirit was so different - yet I loved it, and Phantom's show was beautiful (their best visual product ever - IMO, except for the staging of the guard). I liked Star as well, because I see that year as the birth of their deadly brassline. I'm definitely glad we came out on top and I am equally glad that I got to pass in review of SCV in 1989.
  18. I thought the two best designed drills in 1988 were Cavies and SCV. Both were brilliant. Our design was good and obviously suited to our needs. All drills of the top 6 were more difficult than BD's and that's what did them in ultimately. BD was awesome that year and at finals. I remember when we first saw them (I think we lost by 6) - I never thought we'd even get close to them. They blew me away. However, they had a show that allowed them to be passed up. A week earlier - they would have been champions, a week later - they could have been 5th. Thanx for your comments...it definitely was a dream come true. Looking back on it, I think they got the captions right. Visual - Madison, Cavies, then SCV Brass - BD, Garfield, then Madison GE - SCV, Madison (this could have been switched) PERC - SCV, Garfield (I think), Madison SCV was down in 5th in brass and that proved to be the big difference. Nevertheless, it was one of my favorite SCV shows. Just breathtaking. I wouldn't have shed a tear if they won (I wanted them to 85-87), and it was certainly an honor to be in their company.
  19. That was a great year. I remember that night with SCV in TN. It was one of the greatest moments that year! We also played our shows for each other. I idolized SCV during my years with the Jr. Scouts. They were the best, regardless of placement. During 1988, SCV acted with class and grace during the entire season, including finals. The posts by those who marched that year (on this thread) illustrate that class. No sour grapes. No attempt to take away another groups accomplishment. I admire those qualities above all. I've read so many people state that we shouldn't have won - however, most of them appear to not have seen the show live. You can't judge a competition off a video tape or dvd. As far as the person who commented on the 1st 1/2 of our show being unmemorable, I disagree. The show was a total package because it built from beginning to end. The crowd knew Malaguena was coming when we turned back field and the excitement grew. Our opener was much more technically difficult than Malaguena and was exciting in its own right. We had 12 great performances that year, especially the top 3. I don't agree that BD was flat, they just didn't have the visual demand to keep up with SCV or us. Give it another week or two, and I venture to say Cavies and Garfield would have passed them too. It was a great year! That's for sure!
  20. Well the Machachos sound like they were a pretty classless act! I feel bad for the kids that didn't know, but if you don't do backround checks then you have only yourselves to blame! That's appauling that they were behaving in such a manner at finals. DCI should have prohibited anyone who had anything to do with the Machachos from enterting the stadium that night! Why were they not on the 1974 DVD tho?
