  1. I must say I truly enjoy the scouts guard unis. (and i'm saying this cause no one else has) Their work is another story, as well as their flag design(where's the 8 coming from in the last flag?????). Their work is incredibly easy for a top 12 drum corp. I think they may have had 1 quad in their whole show, which is not what I think of when I think of an all male guard. I don't think they are being pushed enough
  2. So I just got back from the Crown rehearsal and I must say I was pleased with their progress. First off, this is not the Crown shows you are used to. The theme of In.trance.it is only really brought out a couple of times in the drill and guard. They are definately not just hitting you over the head with it like Bohemia and Angelus. They worked some of the opener drill and transition between the 3rd and 4th production. Just these few pages over and over got me really excited to see the whole show. The drill is GREAT. You could watch just the drill and be entertained the entire show. There are quite a few spiral forms that morph in new and interesting ways. The guard integration is also nice, but may actually be so much that it inhibits the guard doing the work.(I remember a certain rifle having quite a time making it through the drumline). I'm sure any drill issues will be worked out quickly. On to this hornline. Wow, they really do have a great sound, and really turned up the volume for the run-through. I think you will truthfully see some mix of both the Cavies and Star in this hornline and the musical arrangements. There are some really obvious Star references(between mvmt. 1 and 2). The whole second movement is very abstract, moving between a groove and almost extreme starkness. It's quite strange but quite intriguing at the same time. Overall, the arrangements and brassline are very tasty. The drumline...is better than last year. There are still timing issues at this point, but you can tell they are on the younger end of this corps. I think they will be fine, and hopefully will improve upon last years placement. On a side note, during the run-through I suddenly heard the sound of rain and thought, that's a little overpowering! I looked at the pit, and no rain sticks. Then I looked over and saw that the sprinklers had come on! I guess you can't help that. Now, lastly, the guard. This guard is performing some of the most intricate and difficult work I have EVER seen on a field. They are much dirtier than last year at this time, but I think that is mostly due to demand. If they can pull this off, I cannot fathom where they will finish at finals. Good luck Crown, in your first show later this week! I'll be in Illinois Swagin it at the BOA Summer Symposium, but i'll also be at nightbeat. I will try to do a review of DCI Central Illinois when I get back.
  3. That's still a decent score for Madison, it's not like they don't have a month and half to make changes.(and they are right there with Glassmen even though you can't compare scores, I know). Great job Blue Stars, hopefully I will love you as much this year as last year.(i'm sure I will).
  4. This would be beautiful, for real. But Water Night would be my pick as the ballad.
  5. Beowulf by Francis Macbeth I had the joy of listening to this piece for the first time this past week. I thought about how awesome it would be to have a drum corps do this piece, it is so dark and foreboding. Plus it starts on a high C for trumpet, cold. It might be a little too modern for Regiment though, it's definantly not classical.
  6. So, the first time I saw the Crown guard unis this year I was like, what does 444 mean? So I searched all over the internet for stuff on 444 and apparently it means that angels are with us and watching over us. If you watch, many times in crown's drill this comes up. I just think it was amazing that crown integrated this into their show. I mean, they really did their research. see: http://community.webshots.com/photo/411548...411606829NkrXIB
  7. I was just about to post this, but guess I got beat to the punch. As for worth your money, this is the first real problem I have had. Plus, I was floored by season pass letting us stream the shows from last week for free. I think seasonpass is doing fine, just a little hiccup.
  8. This should be as exciting as the 2000 cavies vs. cadets. Hopefully no tie this time though.
  9. You beat me to starting a phantom thread. OMLLOJ....this hornline blows my face off!!!!! AND I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!! This is what drum corps is supposed to sound like, no narration, no fancy smancy stuff, just blow the roof of the sucker power. I think I am getting way too excited.
  10. Crown's guard had to have an off night. They are one of the best, and have an awesome staff, they didn't even drop that much when I saw their first show of the year. The new closer might have something to do with it.
  11. Now I remember that I already knew that. Thanks for reminding me, still an awesome piece.
  12. Heroes Lost and Fallen By Gillingham(OMG) Nixon in China By John Adams(more adams on the field) Water Night by Eric Whitacre(Phantom, maybe) Some of the earlier Cirque stuff by Rene Dupere I can't remember who wrote this but Wind Symphony premiered a piece for the composers conference called "Jacob's Ladder" and it was AMAZING and very hard too. It had a great trumpet solo in it.
  13. All I want to know is when will Crown's guard get their unis????
  14. So, I read the rules, but I am very confused about the caption stuff. It all just seemed like jibberish to me. Since I haven't participated before, could someone tell me how this goes in plain english? Thanks.
  15. So, I bought my season pass today and had the idea to listen to the 1972 playlist. Wow, I was blown away with the hornline! To think they were doing that with a valve and a piston! I just can't believe the sound. I'm sorry if you think this was a useless topic, but I thought that it would be refreshing for you "old guys" to see someone who is young appreciating the early years. Any suggestions on other shows I should check out?
  16. I just wish that Crown would add more percussion behind the spoken poetry, and would have their pit playing more technical stuff during that solo section. The stuff is just way too easy for a corps that has such an amazing percussion section. Remember, last year at this time Crown and the Cadets were very close in percussion!
  17. But, they are more "in the hunt" than most people probably would have thought. Only .10 behind crossmen! Magic.......what has gone wrong? If they don't clean up soon they may be out of semis.
  18. Just one question: Why do a review if it's going to be completely biased?
  19. Thanks for the review, sounds like the Glassmen have a good program this year.(as I have felt they have every year, but not everyone feels the same)
