  1. Eh, Sam Hazo... He did the Allstate Senior Band in SC a year or two back, and I while I would have rather been with him than the guy I didn't know doing the Clinic level, I still think his music is a little... repetitive. Granted, it's good repetitive music, but still, if you've heard it once... I'm pretty okay with a lot of composers not allowing corps to play their music, mostly because sometimes I get a little offended by corps that play big orchestral works... I know that sounds arrogant or pretentious or whatever, but it just irritates me when a corps butchers a work into a million pieces, or plays certain excerpts the wrong way (and yeah, it's not a matter of interpretation... if you've ever played in an orchestra or studied excerpts, you know there's a right and wrong.) There are just some things that never should be arranged. The corps that has pulled off the orchestral arrangement the best in my mind is PR 96... That arrangement was probably as true as a corps could possibly do. BK on the other hand... Awesome hornline, but really??? Did you guys have to mess with all of those awesome piano concertos??? PR's version of Nessun Dorma irritates me (mellophone does not equal tenor!!!), but their Fire of Eternal Glory is incredible... Also, if a corps ever arranges Brahms 4 I will harm something innocent. That is a threat.
  2. Yeah, definitely not going for super detail here, but since they're really aren't alot of secondary sources on drum corps in the world besides that link to the Star history page that was kindly posted, I figured that this would be a pretty good place to gather that sort of information. Also, sorry about posting to the wrong forum, I don't think I was aware there was a historical forum...
  3. In my aplang class, we were assigned a pretty broad essay asking us to "evaluate" something. Basically, I get to choose anything in the world and tell about its effects on things related to it and also good things and bad things relating to that topic. Since the topic is so broad, I've sort of narrowed down what I want to Star 93 and its effects on the drum corps community and how it was ahead of its time and how it got booed and #### alot blah blah blah etc etc. While I certainly have my own perceptions of that show to draw from, I think it would help a lot if some of you could post your perceptions and opinions of the show so maybe I can better get a grip on what I want to write about... It would especially help if some of you guys who were not infants in 93 to contribute Thanks for the help!
  4. Oh you say that now (about going back to Empire after age out).... Even with a good number of years ahead of me, even I can't imagine marching years after I age out... It's even hard to imagine marching all my years consecutively anyway. Last year was really really hard...
  5. I heard that they have 6 weeks of spring training this year, is this true??
  6. I didn't mean to imply that any specific corps directors don't like DCP, it's just my assumption that many wouldn't based off of a lot of the BS that is spouted off here daily. Obviously, I have no direct insight into what goes on in anyone's mind and can only use my best judgement, just as anyone else here. Please try not to attach my opinions to anyone else.
  7. You make an extremely reasonable and logical point, except: Let's say there are around a hundred people who frequent and post on this forum, not just during the summer, but year round. I'm not sure what the real number is exactly, but its certainly not an exceptionally large number, and it is definitely under a thousand. Which is far, far below the actual number of people who enjoy and attend shows during tour. Really, the opinions of people who post on the these forums in relation to the majority opinion of the public on drum corps in general does not gel well in most cases. Yes, narration is indisputably an issue for everyone, but this board is by no means a "scientifically accurate" sample of drum corps fans, and I will explain this specific point to you if you REALLY want me too, but I really don't feel like it, so just trust me on that one. If you asked any normal youth involved with the marching arts activities what he thought about, say, Carolina Crown, it wouldn't be loaded with much of the BS and jump-the-sharkitude that is found in this thread. Everyone is different, yes, but arguably, that youth's opinion is most likely the prevailing opinion of the public in general. After all, the children are the future, right? Oh yeah, I forgot, it isn't exactly natural for people to share their thoughts on things when they have exactly zero foresight or evidence supporting their opinions in question unless they are protected by the veil of anonymity on the internet. So yeah, I'm willing to bet corps directors hate the #### out of these forums, and are ###### off in general at the fact that these forums can mistakenly be viewed as an accurate poll of the thoughts of the drum corps community, simply because they are extremely accessible. And actually I completely agree with you that they don't make announcements to see the reaction of everyone here, but they do make announcements in a way that prevents a release of too much information, which in turn creates a very confused and public response from people on this forum.
  8. I wouldn't worry too much about being able to make a topish corps at 15 if that's what you want to do, especially with your experience. I jumped into a top tier corps last year at 15 with absolutely zero corps experience, and my friend, who lives locally, marched that same corps the year before at only 14. I don't know if you live near Concord or anything, but if it's feasible, you should definitely still try out for BD if that's really where you want to end up, even though you'd be ridiculously young. What's your age out, 2016? ####, I sure am old edit: Noticed you are from New England.
  9. No, they shouldn't. They announcement is just a bunch of loaded words and BS for a reason, and that reason is literally to confuse the #### out of everyone on this forum. Because every corps director in the world hates this place.
  10. Worst show field for me was definitely Bristol, RI, because of grass. However, during spring training when we were rehearsing in Bloomington, the high school football team decided to use their wonderful astroturf field for themselves for awhile and we were forced to use some random field with mid calf high, thick Indiana grass... Also field lining sucks.
  11. What time did he leave tour to go to the hospital? ...I think this may have been the guy I stood next to at encore at NightBEAT. That's really sad...
