  1. Yep. But usually I just look for the motivations behind the arguments.
  2. Wow. Why am I surprised that danielray just tried to steer the topic into smoke-free drum corps? What next, dude? All corps vehicles must run on CNG? (Which wouldn't be bad if the corps didn't have to pay for the new vehicles, but I doubt they'd be freebies.) All corps must change their names to that of an endangered animal species to promote their plight? I don't buy the sponsorship argument any more than the first failed argument about gun deaths. Perhaps the next argument will be that certain corps are hiding WMDs? It's a PC thing, pure and simple. And just as silly.
  3. Of all the semis reviews, you'd think the guy who calls himself louielouie would have the least problem mentioning the Kingsmen! :P I don't see the point in arguing over which alumni corps was "best", but that's just me. I'd love to see them all offered up in a DVD set! OK, back to the competing corps now...
  4. GRRRRRRR.... every once in a while, danielray has to throw me off balance by posting something I agree with.... This is one of those times.
  5. Well... at the risk of incurring the wrath of some of you (can't find the right smilies to express my fear) I'd have to say that the most enjoyable thing for me about that linked page was finding on the right side of the page. What would interest me more than using a newly electrified pit to play Cage or Glass or whoever, would be to commission such composers to write FOR drum (AND bugle) corps. How would they write, taking into account all of the existing instrumentation and techniques in use? Would they call for a prepared hornline? I can hear the shouts from the crowd now.... "THEY'RE ALWAYS PREPARED!" I feel my very first original DCP topic brewing. It'll probably come within the week, and probably won't last long.
  6. B) My intention was for the "R" to stand for "rarely", but other interpretations are welcome! Let's not stray too far with alternate meanings for the "H", though... :P
  7. Well, I meant something along the lines or the stadium being wired up to provide the PA, future spotlight additions, etc., not just overall acoustics and the backdrop.
  8. It will be easier to approach both goals if DCI ensures that corps are not losing because they can't afford all of the new gadgets. If a smaller corps can only afford used G bugles, but play the snot out of them, all of the horn judges need to give them due credit. If their pit has to sacrifice a bit of "concert technique" to blend because they can't afford a PA yet, they shouldn't get hit too hard (definitely no pun intended, but worthy of leaving in, I think), although one could argue that they should rewrite their book, I suppose. If a corps chooses to play recognizable music, but with comparable difficulty and execution, they should be judged fairly. Specific judging guidelines should be in place for any new concepts to avoid (at least the appearance of) corps with greater resources "buying" free points by potentially increase their GE with little or no risk of execution penalty. IMRHO, ignoring these concepts will probably ensure an either/or outcome.
  9. Just please, won't somebody explain to me why trying new ideas should involve banning traditional ideas. Why not leave the decisions to the individual corps? Who cares if rifles look odd to outsiders? There are plenty of things that corps do that outsiders don't get or care for. For example, my parents don't have an appreciation for male guard members in makeup and tights. (Please don't try to use that example as another way to change the subject. I mean no more by it than what it says.) The obvious implication of this thread when one weeds out the distractions, especially in the context of the OP's other postings, is that the use of rifles is stagnating innovation and in the name of art they must be eliminated. I don't buy it.
  10. Well, at least some of the II/III shows will be in the main venue, and tickets will be offered as a package with the DI tickets. (At least that's how I interpret the FANtastic 5 package based on the site) I'd say that aspect is an improvement over this year. On an unrelated note, is corps amplification a consideration in the acoustic design plans of the stadium?
  11. Not that I'm anti-patriotic at all, but what does that "I" in "DCI" stand for again? Kudos to the Yokohama Scouts for playing along, and not showing any signs of annoyance (which does not imply knowledge that any of them actually were annoyed).
  12. Good question. I know some of the corps (not all) could benefit from them when they intersperse voice from the field with their music, and underbalance the instruments.
  13. Hmmm... what might work (somewhat...) A Prairie Home Companion type show? A show based on the radio version of War of the Worlds? A simulated TV style talent show! (Just popped into my head. I think this one will withstand critical analysis.) Blending the above with the Cadets' 2007 show, a mock infomercial for Drum Corps! (danielray, I bet you already thought of that one! :P ) Not knowing exactly how the rules and filters work here (mods, please forgive my use of Oprah-speak to get my point across)... The "########" Monologues! b**bs OK, the last one was just for effect, but I bet somebody from the Renegades is now thinking, "Hmmmm....." :P On a side note, why the (you choose the word... HEY WAIT! What about MAD LIBS for the narration????) am I awake right now? (EDIT) On reread, and based on my past participation in threads on this topic, this whole post could be interpreted as sarcasm. Not so much, believe it or not.(END EDIT)
  14. Ummm... second and third paragraph of post #107, but it's moot since he explained it already.
  15. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...2008&st=100 Post #107 I believe. Sorry to hear about your loss of implied job. Maybe I assumed too much. Maybe marketing was just your hobby? Maybe more than one person uses your account? Maybe there are two very similar usernames in play here and I mixed you two up? I'll check again... (EDIT)Nope, same account.... I'll check for a response when I return from sitting through a CoCo professor telling me how to interpret the "real" messages in some films....(END EDIT)
  16. Ahhhhh.... why didn't I see it before... the OP just threw in the liberal PC gun control crap to bait us in so he could promote his real agenda, and then masked it in the corporate sponsorship argument. He's obviously unhappy that corps have not incorporated everything he learned about art in college, as he must be with the realities of his job. Read his other postings. I finally get him. The OP apparently needs constant change for some reason, and has decided that drum corps is where it needs to be. Add (no pun intended...) in the contradictions, and one might think Ritalin is in order. Personal attack? No. Educated guess in an attempt to frame the argument within the context of the OP's perceived motivations? Yup. I hope that doesn't violate the rules. If you'll pardon the obvious cultural reference in regards to the whole "innovation" movement, Professor Chaos..... "SIMPSONS DID IT!" Oh yeah, and will somebody please explain to me how somebody can have such a strong desire for new methods of expression, yet can be so opposed to a concept that merges styles in a non-intuitive way, and then wants to sell out and cites (ironically) that selling out is the way it's been done throughout history?
  17. I have it on good authority that there were at least 4 different horn models just in the French Horn section!
  18. I wonder if there will be a "without narration" feature on the DVD? Probably not, but I'd love to be able to give their show a less biased viewing than I have been able to so far. I just hated the narration. IMO, it was like listening to the Mormon family from South Park. (Mods, that is a specific cultural reference, and not commentary on Mormons.) I don't mind if you disagree, but please don't waste time arguing that I didn't feel that way about it. And frankly, telling us the long, glorious history of spoken word with music is just cutting the legs out from under those that support this show for being "innovative"! (Insert your favorite smiley here)
  19. OOOOH! Inspiration! Rig the rifles up with LEDs so when they spin the line can spell words out! Just like those little fans you can get at any convenience store counter! Maybe even provide captioning for the narration! And I'm not being nearly as sarcastic as it may seem. Surely lighting in the guard equipment is on the way... why not use it for an excuse to keep spinnable equipment around?
  20. Anything Phantom (nope, never marched with them, unfortunately) especially their volume II CD stuff for varied sentimental reasons. I want "Fire of Eternal Glory" played at my funeral! From this year... hmmm... obviously at least one version of Firebird, since I think everyone played it twice, with the possible exception of Yokohama. And probably Smooth Criminal, as if the AAF version doesn't live in a small lobe of my brain already (and the rent's late!) Oh yeah, and no matter how hard I try to dispel it.... "When I play my trumpet..." and the inappropriate vision that comes with it.
  21. OK, ok... the truth is that I'm too dayum poor to go that far right now, especially when I'm back in college working toward a second career. (To stay nearly on topic, the first career was with the military) If I could afford it, I'd be there.
  22. MMMM.... sexy! B) I love you Renegades! If only I didn't live too far away to audition...
  23. I'm afraid that our core definitions are too disparate to have a productive debate, especially in the context of the thread topic. If you honestly believe that Drum Corps is incapable of "evil", and that the military is incapable of "good" (based on your definitions), I don't see the point of even trying. Sorry you feel that way about PMs.
