  4. MUSICALITY !!!! the colorguard can be as clean as they could be , but are you seeing visually what you are hearing. I have seen some extremely clean colorguards before, but it looks like they are spinning to a whole other song the instructor was listening to when they wrote the equipment work. If the visual side of the colorguard is not enhancing what you are hearing then you might as well move them off the field (imo)

  8. As for the original topic, as someone else said, having sabres on the field can help the score. You are presenting another dimension to your performance and showing more depth to your abilities. If I may sway from the original topic for a second...... THANK YOU for this realization! Some drum corp staff and members (not all) tend to look down on the guard because they do not attend camps 2-3 times a month during the off season. I personally am not a drummer or horn player, yet I do respect the dedication and attributes they bring to the program. Without them the package is incomplete, however I would love to see a drummer or horn player lay down their equipment and change to a completely different piece that requires different skills & muscles to master. (flag, rifle sabre, etc) Also let us not forget having to play "catch up" and learn as much of the show that the other sections just took months working on. Now add dancing and dealing with uniform parts and sometimes wet equipment. Back to the original topic..... Taping the blades will most likely increase your visual for sabres. If it is the flicker of the light or shiny look you are seaking then you can always run a piece of tape down one edge of the blande. It gives you both affects and also will help the person spinning it the ability to see it while in the air.
  9. I wash flags all the time. If the flags are sewn properly then a washing maching on gentle cycle will be just fine. Use woolite or a gentle detergent to make sure the colors don't fade or material gets damaged. If you think the material is a fine delicate fabric then hand wash them in the tub, rinse and hang dry. Good Luck
  10. hey Mike, Here's your answer ~~~~~> $$$$$$$$ Although there a a handful of Senior guards spread throughout the country the overall interest just was not there to establish the class. Lifting the age limit in World class opened up the opportunity for the more serious "age outs" that did have the time, talent and money to pursure a few additional seasons after aging out. As you mentioned some senior guards are more of an A class level pretty much due to the amount of time they rehearse and funds they have to spend. Having many members that also teach is another obsticle we and other senior guards have. Many of the senior guards that are around do not have the time or funds to rehearse as the World guards do. I wish our group did, but we do what we can during the one day a week we get. I don't consider my group your "average senior guard" however we are lucky that we have the region where we can attract some good talent. We also have a program established to raise funds to invest into our programs. maybe one day we will make it out to Dayton to compete. As far as WGI goes, if you are not attracting the money then you are not an asset to them. If you won't pack the stands and sell tickets then it is not worth the expence. Senior guards are too spread out to really get everyone together fro a full class competition. In the past we tried to invite Senior guards from the east coast region to utilize the Mid Atlantic regional as our sort of "championships showdown" if you want to call it that. It was fun indeed to meet other groups from all over that were able to make it. There were many that made it through the years and overall always felt we supported each other even though we were competing with one another. Mid-Atlantic regional was able to host: Esquire Sr THE Guard Sr Voque Sr Winter Sky Sr AssemblyLine Sr Light Brigade Sr Back-n-Sync Sr Age to Perfection Sr any others I am missing??? Tommy THE GUARD, SR
  11. LOL. AMEN! I have performed with stitches, cuts, bone chips, headaches, flu, fever, nausia, etc etc etc.. no broken bones though (knock on wood) Many times against dr's orders. Performers now a days just seek out reasons not to perform.
  12. This early in the season just put her in the sling. At least the forms will be there. I agree with a prior post. most peolple wouldnt even know it. If you watch the Erte show, there is a girl in that show that pops in and out of the drill in the back just to fill in the forms. She rarely is even spinnning in the show. Most of the time she is just standing in the back right corner. I think she does a flag exchange at one point and then marches off the back 50 and back to her corner. I am sure people still to this day rarely notice her on the video tape unless osmeone points her out. & they won a WGI Gold medal Even if you let the judges know and she air flags, the people in the audience will just end up watching her and looking for her equipment on the floor the whole show. LOL
  13. Spend the money for the genuine King. They will replace it "if" it breaks. It is worth the investment in the longrun.
  14. "IF" it happened again the guard that won would not be winning with the same process that Erte won. We have an entire new judging system now. Today is more opinion than fact. If we brought back the "tick system" today then many of the colorguards walking away with medals would not have them now. The "political game today" is so much more involved with the process if you ask me. Back when Erte & State Street tied in 1985, (if i recall) at the first regional Erte was so far down (25-30 points) they would not even have made finals by today's standards or even concidered as an option to win at championships. Similar to the presidential race that is going on today. "if this person doesnt win IOWA or come out in tthe top 2-3 they are out" I live in PA I could care less about who wins IA this early in the race. Erte struggled and was judged with the scoring system they were given on the product they produced at that 1st performance and then at their last. "back in the day" placements could be decided if you had a sail in your flag, bobbled a catch, out of form, timing or god forbid... DROPPED! something EVERYONE could see and compare tick...tick....tick...tick Today's judging system would easily overlook one of those things in a program to choose a winner. It is the only ratio I could see why some people would not concider colorguard a "sport." There is no defined rule of measurement between two competitiors. Speed?, Height?, Length?, Quanity?, Timing? we are judged by QUALITY & DESIGN In 1985 Erte and State Street both contributed that something extra in the design that advanced the activity as well as fulfilling the achievement factor better than the rest with less ticks and bobbles. Today you can still watch those shows and learn something to apply today. It was not just entertainment. The best test if a "NEW" colorguard could win the gold in IW would be to have them show up only at championships and see what happens when they are put up against everyone else. Although Erte Productions is thought by some as a "first yr guard" the judging community knew where they came from. The name in itself meaning "one of a kind" is the gimmick that many do not relate. There is an old saying in colorguard for the younger generation out there "You need to pay your dues" Erte or if you prefer "the old Quasar" had already paid theirs before stepping onto the floor. Yes it could happen today but it just would not be the same in my opinion.
  15. The strap helps with balance and also for spotting. But it does add to the drag. A tight strap will spin faster. I spun a rifle for years without a strap (back in the day) Your hands definately will last longer with a strap..... the arthritis that builds up after 20 years will let you know for sure. LOL
  16. There will be enough equipment for everyone to use. 37-rifles 36 King sabres Tom Classics Colorguard Director
  17. Take off the streamers. Just kidding. LOL Have you tried a lighter rifle? You can always toss a 7 on a box or prop then step off and catch the 8. Also tighten up your strap or perhaps tape it down to the gun. It could be causing drag while in the air. Check the ends also if they are taped make sure it is fresh tape, everything can add to the drag while in the air. A seven could be just as effective if it is done properly and in the right musical phrase. Bigger is not always better........ then again the higher you toss the louder they will scream LOL keep working on your lower tosses and eventually it will come as your strength builds up. Don't break any fingers ..... :)
