  1. from what i read this was indeed funny.... hey how do u guys get the big pics on ur avatar?
  2. whatever it is.... add the dot net dot biz or dot com to it.....
  3. no pioneer flaming from me.... i was in the 96 pioneer drumline playing quads when we took the div 2 drum title.... it breaks my heart that pioneer gets flamed, and more so that i marched surf in 97 "snare", and this is the year that a week end corps beat a full touring one... its bitter sweet for me
  4. Here are the top 3 snare vids: 1st place, Bill McGrath III - 2nd place, Jonathan Leal - 3rd place, Scott McCoy - heres a pic of billy and i http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3065...6115&ref=mf great memories!
  5. what about taking one of the allentown regional shows and inviting reading to compete on the same sheets???? id die to see this... can u imagine the reading bucs going on then bd?? exciting...
  6. just have to find a promoter to take the risk..... what else would have to happen???? 3 dci vs 3 dca corps would be great!!! ill bet ya ticket sales would be good!!!
  7. lets not forget you guys destroyed all the smaller division drumlines and took the drum trophy.... and had a lot of upper dca lines nervous, esp considering the news that the drumline was two weeks old?? is it true the drumline was learning the music on various dci buses coming back home from indy?? this is texas for you.. you cant beat music education in texas.. ive been saying it for years.. heres another example... im still waiting for access to ur forum, i have so many questions :) i am inspired u guys came to dca, all nice and cool and humble and then through your actions.. smashed thousands of skulls in with your tight beats and hard work... bravo...... im a fan!! and rick beckham works near where u guys rehearse from what i understand....
  8. i raise your marine drum corps guns with my three year old loose in your equipment truck. :) now thats damage waiting to happen
  9. hes a lefty.. u think he could do it righty? of course he could.. :) he guys.. im new to this forum, but is there a way we can vote or poll for a top 7 snareline from these guys? how about a full drumline?
  10. Thomas Lang was born in Vienna and grew up in Stockerau, a small town in Austria. He lived in London for ten years and moved to Los Angeles in December 2006. how did he do bridgemen? just curious
  11. "There used to be a video of Carlock playing a marching snare solo for one of his exit performances at North Texas. It was every bit as good as what you'd see at I&E. He marched center snare at NTSU and has unbelievable hands (even if he's sold out on Moeller). I'd be comfortable with him on a snare line." wow!! i would not have known from the 2003 md festival.. i couldnt stand watching him.. ill have to become a fan..
  12. ahh i got it.. so i should try broadening my definition of "professional musician" a bit. ok, i think i got it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musician ok i'll extend myself to understanding that there are more "captions" per say to this career. thank you!!!! i think i got it now.... i "assumed" when i saw the phrase "pro musicians playing in drum corps" i assumed they meant pro players.. i was too limited on what other occupations exist within the term.. thank you!!!!! im still jealous, id love to march corps again....... but im afraid my wife kid and i would be homeless... maybe i could do a small parade corps...
  13. ur right.... i guess guys who work in studios could get away with it if they are in demand enough and the clients are fine doing the session work midweek..... since i aged out in 97, its all about: thursday to sunday night....... sometimes other nights, but rare.. what are some other kinds of pros? are the military musician guys allowed to leave for the weekends to do corps? what am i missing here, please help me to understand this.. im really curious.... what segment of the professional musician population doesnt rely on the weekends.. out here on long island the big money is private events "weddings mitzvahs corperate events, etc...then followed by night clubs then bars then regional/community theatre. most people in this country work day jobs close to 9-5 m-f, so thats why weekend parties are set on sat and sun with the lower budget ones on friday and thursday. of course there are exceptions.. but the patterns r easy to read out here... i was told there r amazing people in this online forum and i look forward to learning a lot...
  14. hello mr rabbit, im sorry if i wasn't clear, my bad... professional musican - the ones who pay for their food shelter and clothing and everything else from primarily performing on musical instruments for a career. its not just what "i" consider pro, its what gets put on your taxes as your occupation... i doubt that you can be on broadway and march corps.... your missing what like 5 shows a week out of 8 or more? maybe if ur a sub and only play during the week, but then you are missing the bulk of your potential income which is friday saturday and sunday... andrew beall who is our NY PAS PREZ is the main marimba one sub under valerie Naraho "sorry bout the spelling," and hes doing boston crusaders pit and he had to fly back a ton just to sub.... thanks for the convo.. u guys r cool
  15. mr. cone, thanks for the reply.... im jealous.. how do u pull it off? id love to know how..... answering these questions will help me understand... 1. is the corps you are marching with just rehearsing during the week? 2. is ur main instrument tuba, and if so who employs you? what type of clients.. my wife will be teaching high school band full time by 2011 we hope, shes a dci vet, and is inspired by your statement so how do u do it? 3. do you guys not compete on the weekends? 4. my student just marched his first year of corps with sun. they had a very very light schedule due to the fact its so expensive to live here u have to constantly think about work or u will be homeless.. anyhow.. even with the light schedule they had and they only did like 4 shows or so, i could have never marched.... going to dcas this year meant i had to block a thursday night, friday night, friday night late shift, sat afternoon, sat eve, and made it home for the sat late shift....... as it was going to dca this year was an amazing expense and with some cancelations i got for september already im not off to a good start for the fall... 5. please, i wanna know... maybe the business model you guys are using would help out here.. id love to march corps again, but all i could commit is dca weekend, assuming we dont make finals other wise the whole weekend is total financial loss with not having sun afternoon or sun evening.... 6. i could commit maybe one week night a month... i only have a small number of students so scheduling wouldnt be a big deal....there is no way i could do any week end commitments... 7. what is your website? id love to see your solicitation videos you use for getting new clients... 8. looking forward to hearing from you..... partydrummer@johndonovan.biz
  16. sorry to bust ur bubble, but professional musicians not only can't march corps, its darn near impossible for them to even go see shows bc they make most of their money on the weekends.... ive been to 8 i think in 12 years due to cancelations from clients... way to go bucs!!!!!!
  17. hey guys im gonna chime in on this hard bc its a fun thread... thank you for giving attention to the guys that do this full time....we all appreciate it.....as we know this is all subjective, please dont flame me bc u dont agree with the info ive collected through-out my carreer so far, and this is all based on if calls went out for now for a high end celeb drummer drumline for a rich guys party who would pull their weight for a job: 1. neil peart - watch his videos.. his fingers still dont touch the stix...not my first choice by any means... 2. mike portnoy "EXTREMELY FAST LEARNER"- without a doubt he would be fine... and his hearing is off the charts.... 3. vinny colaiuta - im not sure on this by a long a shot 4. virgil donati- of course 5. jojo mayer - watch his secret weapons video.... he talks about rudiments and about THE VIRTUALLY UNPLAYABLE HYBRIDS...outta there guy.. cut.. sorry jojo ur one of my favs but not for this discussion... 6. benny greb - who knows.. maybe :) 7. thomas pridgen - he would be fine.. he plays loud bc that what he gets paid to do.... check out his bio n stuff when u can.. hes the future .... 8. steve gadd - im sure he would be fine, most guys learn new material bc they need to for a job, if he was poor i wold say he could do it.. but hes semi retired from what i heard recently in the arizona area ... this would be up to him if he wanted to learn it, but im sure he could... 9. billy cobham - love ya billy very much!!!!!! but id need to see him playing the chart on vid first..... 10. chad sexton - he would be be fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when u motivate chad the right way hes unstopable..... 11. gregg bissonnette - would be fine and MAPEX MAPEX MAPEX!!! 12. keith carlock - hes an alternate with neil peart.... sorry 13. pat petrillo - CENTER SNARE 14. terry bozzio - great musician but this wouldnt be good for him... he cant do doubles.. ive seen him many times in person im a huge fan 15. carl palmer - nope 16. dave weckle - love ya dave but nope 17. dom famularo - yes yes and yes and yes.. his open mind has let massive amounts of information be absorbed through out his carreer 18. mike mangini - would be fine 19. travis barker - right outside of pat petrillo, no this wasnt a mistake 20. carter beuford - nope 21. deen castronovo - dont know him yet 22. omar hakim - nope hes a groove guy like chad smith.. thats why he gets the big bucks, he shuts up and does his job better then anyone.. 23. rod morgenstein - nope 24. todd sucherman - possible, very very possible 25. the wfd guys? guys this is different animal.. so no 26. jon bailey can be the mascot.. love him.. 27. jomba gary karpinski steve ventre and jack murray MAPEX MAPEX MAPEX i would need submitted videos 28. carla azar.. can u send me a link to a video? 29. joe morello is blind, i love him but we have an issue with marching and drill and visual blending? 30. tommy lee, not the snare line at all lol.. but him and dom would MC the groups introduction!!!!!!!!! go tommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 31. glenn kotche..dont know him 32. gary novak is insane.. hes in.. he did high school footband, was NEVER IN band, but had a gift when he started... 33. X-mens greatest drummer ever... he made more money and played for more people then anyone thurston put out.. 36. danny raymond of course.. i just didnt know he was a kit player..any links? u also gotta take into account who has pre-existing injuries.... how many do u want to limit this down to? oh and why did u confuse jeff queen as a drum set player before? hes a former pro rudimental performer and now a succesful instructor..wrong thead wrong group of guys..
