  1. I will be shutting off caption changes Wednesday night, 8/7, in the vicinity of 9pm CDT. Yes, caption changes will be back on Thursday and Friday nights. One update of up to two captions each night. The usual caption update deadline applies: 5pm EDT/2pm PDT. That's when the system automatically locks in the caption choices and sends me the spreadsheet for that night's competition.
  2. What looked like a four- or five-horse race in late June soon became a three-horse race during July and has now progressed into a head-to-head duel as we enter Championships week. Which Blue team will be holding the trophy on Saturday night? 98.256 Bluecoats 97.940 Blue Devils 96.419 Santa Clara Vanguard 96.231 Carolina Crown 95.175 Cavaliers 94.665 Boston Crusaders 90.437 Blue Knights 90.106 Blue Stars 89.935 Cadets 89.154 Mandarins 88.476 Crossmen 87.742 Phantom Regiment 86.511 Spirit of Atlanta 84.093 Colts 83.850 Academy 83.558 Pacific Crest 80.498 Madison Scouts 79.525 Troopers 78.347 Spartans 77.078 Jersey Surf 76.839 Genesis 76.647 Gold 76.431 Legends 75.544 Music City 72.375 Southwind 71.904 7th Regiment 71.756 Guardians 71.448 Cascades 71.274 Louisiana Stars 71.103 River City Rhythm 69.382 Golden Empire 65.460 Shadow 63.237 Heat Wave 62.326 Raiders 62.065 Colt Cadets 61.580 Les Stentors

  5. Huh, I had the file created but the upload must not have taken. Scores are there now. Thanks for keeping an eye on everything, Luke. 👍 It can be tough for one person to catch everything that can go wrong with this system. 😂
  6. Initial polls are up in the Rules Congress subforum. Help choose the Season 30 Championships location!

  9. Wasn't just you. Texas Zephyrs and Thoroughbreds also took a plummet. I'll go see what's wrong.
  10. Bass Goo is just like electronic amplification, added effects, and every other change that has happened to drum corps in the past 20 years: there are some corps that are really good at implementing it and blending it into the show, and there are some corps that absolutely suck eggs at it and make it a noisy mess of a distraction. When balanced right, I hear that added bass boost on some power chords on DCI recordings and it sounds just divine. But other corps have made it a syrupy mess that overwhelms the brass sound being put out by the performers. I do have to agree with Jeff: when it goes wrong, I'm not seeing the caption hits I would expect. An unbalanced electric setup should (at the very least) reflect negatively on the music analysis and general effect sheets. I can't say I've ever noticed much recap numbers movement between good goo and bad goo, though.
  11. 2014. They're not a lock yet, but they're sitting pretty. To miss out on Friday's Semifinals, Surf would have to get passed by two of Southwind/Cascades/Golden Empire/7th Regiment group and I don't see that happening. To show you just how fast DCI changes, in 2014 the Boston Crusaders finished 10th, the Madison Scouts 11th, and the Mandarins 21st.
  12. It was my idea. Quite frankly, some seasons we have had trouble just getting ten corps to participate in each of the two lower divisions. This year, there are 13 in A, 13 in Open, and 19 in World. It's not an idea I've given lots of deep thought to. Just something I thought might make the game more competitive/exciting, and I figured I would toss it out to hear pros and cons.
  13. Much like Michael Bublé sees the approaching New Year as a sign he must return to hibernation for another nine months, so Hostrauser views the upcoming end of the drum corps season. BUT! There are still two more weekly power rankings I will force you to sit and suffer through, much like that 8,000th rendition of "Winter Wonderland" you listen to from the Canadian crooner on December 23rd. 98.022 Blue Devils 98.007 Bluecoats 97.276 Santa Clara Vanguard 95.047 Carolina Crown 94.578 Boston Crusaders 94.195 Cavaliers 90.974 Blue Stars 90.722 Blue Knights 89.370 Cadets 88.777 Mandarins 87.233 Crossmen 86.633 Phantom Regiment 85.447 Spirit of Atlanta 82.996 Academy 82.650 Colts 81.766 Pacific Crest 79.031 Madison Scouts 78.826 Troopers 76.976 Spartans 76.225 Gold 75.606 Legends 75.296 Music City 75.047 Genesis 72.945 Jersey Surf 71.163 Southwind 70.735 Cascades 70.607 Golden Empire 69.614 7th Regiment 68.699 River City Rhythm 68.348 Louisiana Stars 67.411 Guardians 64.055 Shadow 61.138 Colt Cadets 59.245 Heat Wave 59.057 Raiders 55.596 Les Stentors
  14. This season is in the Northwest, last year the Northeast, and before that the South Central, Southwest, and Southeast. So we're kind of due for Central/North Central USA. Kansas City and Chicago both qualify for that, and (remarkably) we've never had Champs at either site. Or outside the USA. Season 17 was the last time we had Finals in a different country.
  15. I use the same Google everyone else does. But really, it's just basic arithmetic. Every show from the 70s/80s/90s that didn't have licenses during creation will need to have licenses obtained before DCI can legally stream them. Arrangement licenses, synchronization licenses, or at the very least a broadcast license for streaming. Several years ago, Tresona was recommending bands budget $250-$300 PER SONG for the necessary licensing. I would not be surprised if that amount has increased. We'll assume everything in the past twelve years or so is already covered/current on licensing. So we've got 35 years of DCI. How many corps do you want per year? Top 25? Any D2 or D3 (or A-90 or A-60, etc.) corps? Let's go real basic: just Finalists. Let's also conservatively estimate four songs per corps per year. At $250 per license. 35 x 12 x 4 x $250 = $420,000 Sure, this is just a ballpark guess. But when you add in the hundreds upon hundreds of man-hours it would take to apply for and pursue all these licenses, I seriously doubt DCI is willing or able to toss half a million dollars chasing the appropriate copyright licensing necessary to stream old shows.
  16. Your entire argument is derailed by a total lack of understanding of the true amount of money involved here, and also by forgetting that revenue does not equal profit. 2018 Revenue $ 15,790,000,000 - Netflix (139M subscribers) $ 1,700,000,000 - Amazon Prime Video (75M subscribers) $ 1,500,000,000 - Hulu (25M subscribers) $ 5,000,000 - FloSports (estimated revenue; subscriber numbers not released) FloSports' estimated revenue for 2018 was $5 million. That's it. For the whole company. FloSports is still surviving on venture capitalist investments: they just scored $47 million in funding last month, which is HUGE. And they recently signed a seven-figure deal with the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) to air their sports. I can assure you, DCI's deal with FloMarching AND the revenue FloMarching is pulling in from subscribers is nowhere close to seven figures. Obtaining the rights retroactively for all of the songs in the DCI archives going back decades would cost a fortune, even with savvy negotiation. I know we are all passionate about this activity, but we need to strongly remember that DCI is a tiny, tiny, tiny fish in a huge ocean. Having ANY streaming service AT ALL interested in carrying the activity is a huge win.

  19. Ah yes, the heady days of the 60s and 70s where every corps recycled the same ten tunes over and over and over again, often times many years in a row. Here's your trophy for the worst idea expressed on DCP this summer. The competition was fierce, but you outdid them all. It's a tremendous honor.
  20. Since this forum becomes a ghost town as soon as DCI Finals end, I have opened up the Rules Congress now. Please check the rules congress sub-forum for new posts.
  21. Submit changes or tweaks you would like to see in this thread. Proposal #1 - Reduce DCPI to two classes. In order to match DCI, we would eliminate Class A and just have World and Open. HOWEVER, since I know many of you are quite fond of your A corps, I would allow all current players to be grandfathered in and move their A corps up to Open Class. Thus, each legacy player would be able to have 1 World and 2 Open class corps. This would of course be optional, not mandatory.
  22. Please post your bids/ideas for Finals locations for next season in this thread. The last ten sites are ineligible. The ineligible locations are: Atlanta, GA Austin, TX Baltimore, MD Eugene, OR Lexington, KY Minneapolis, MN New York, NY Philadelphia, PA San Diego, CA Seattle, WA
  23. Congratulations to the winners of tonight's FANFARE Championships in Wauwatosa, WI!
