  1. The Sun Devils Drum & Bugle Corps Camp weekend #1. Sat. Jan 3rd and Sunday Jan 4th. at North Port High School. You can still sign up online at www.sundevilscorps.org and get directions. North Port is on the gulf coast of Fla. about 1 hour south of Tampa and 30 mins north of Ft. Myers on Rt 75. 2009 program called "X - Drum Corps Evolved" SD will be playing on Bb Dynasty brass this year and hope to field a large brass line with Mark Cole's great score. Ron Lambert (Cavaliers) will be our percussion caption head this year on our Yamaha equipment. Trevlin Evan (Carolina Crown) and Ileana "Blue" Johns will be our Co-Guard caption heads. Open house Dec 7th was a great success and we have been getting even more sign-ups on-line since then. Camp rehearsal is open to everyone, so if you're thinking about marching this summer...this is a great opportunity for you to check us out, play in the line, and see what the 2009 Sun Devils are all about.
  2. Kevin is the man !!! had some great times playing with "Saders" and Mass Legends.
  3. Keith, I just flew non-stop roundtrip from Tampa TPA to Rochester ROC on AirTran for $159.
  4. I hung up my ice scraper in my workshop as a "momento". Do they sell ice scrapers in Florida? I remember the days up north when I had to use an audio cassette case to scrape my windshield because I lost my scraper. I had to laugh once when I saw a glove and winter hat display at Walmart in Ft. Myers. South of Rt 4. in Fla is totally different weather. It was 78 today and riding my motorcycle with shorts on while I went to indoor drumline meeting at the high school. But your blood does thin out and 50 feel like 30. I think I may have to wear long undies all weekend in Rochester. Hey next year - Orlando ?
  5. Dec 10 beach (Today) Dec 11 - Oh that's right I live at the beach - Florida - yeah baby... I got to try to find my winter coat for that Rochester DCA Congress this weekend. I hear the high will be 32 deg. I haven't seen that temperature since winter 2004.
  6. We considered it a "chilly" day in the high 50's. brrrr........
  7. One other thing.... we are now Bb Brass. Bring your brass instruments to next camp.
  8. The Sun Devils are pleased to report that our second ever Open House was a great success. After a brief opening announcement and introduction of the staff, the corps headed out for an introduction to the Sun Devils visual program. Visual staff member Alan Mundy was pleased with the work put in. “It was a real pleasure to see so many new faces come in with a high level of training. When combined with our returning veterans, there’s a lot of potential for some really exciting things in the visual program in year two of this organization.” Immediately after visual block, the corps enjoyed a lunch provided by Sun Devils super volunteer Nancy Mingle before breaking in to sectionals. While the brass headed outside to begin working on elements of the technique program, the battery and front ensemble convened under new percussion caption head Ron Lambert. Open house attendee Paul Devlin said, “Ron Lambert was impressive as well. I admire his philosophy for music, and he also proved to me that he wants to make a great drum line. I believe if everybody listens to him, adopts his technique, and does their homework, it will be great. I also had fun with the guys.” Following sectionals, the corps reconvened for a brief show and tell segment, where each section displayed what they had learned that afternoon for the rest of the corps. Especially impressive was the brief routine performed by the guard to Fall Out Boy’s “Beat It”. If you missed the open house, make sure you join us at our first camp of the season, January 3rd and 4th at North Port High School in North Port, Florida. The corps will be working through the first half of our 2009 program “X”. Come be a part of something special! 51 was the count and we expect 25-35% more when we move to our new rehearsal site. No positions are set and it is our intent to march everyone that is capable and is willing to be a team player. Next camp is Jan 3-4 at North Port High School.

  20. Florida Myths #27: 105 deg heat - It never gets over 95 here BUT the humidity is very high. I would imagine that all southern states in summer are killer. Texas comes to mind. Now I hear that they do have 105 deg days. I live near Tampa and average temp is 91-92 in summer. Last year there were at least 3 World Class corps that held camps and actively recruited in Florida. Florida is fertile area for recruitement. They have a highly organized competition High school band circuit FMBC as well as Winter Guard and Indoor Drumline circuit FFCC. Of course in a Florida winter we wear shorts. The DCI-Orlando show is very well attended especially for an early season show with a smaller list of corps than DCI-Atlanta. We ran a new DCA - All-Age (16 and up) corps this year and the heat can be a problem. We don't tour like DCI so we don't get any escape from Florida as far as rehearsals go. We are Floridians and expect the heat and humdity but it still can wear you down. I am from Boston. You could almost make the same claim that New England is a corps killer. BAC is not really from Boston (wink-wink). NorthStar, 27th, Defenders & ECJ died. Now Florida does have some unique charector traits and that may contribute to the inability to maintain a corps. I think it is really hard to start a corps from scratch. It is extremely expensive and there seems to be no limit in sight with new rules changes as to budget constraints. If you had limits on corps budgets, it may be posssible to keep up.
  21. Sun Devils - Drum & Bugle Corps - Florida Additional Board of Director Positions needed The Sun Devils Drum and Bugle Corps has started planning their second season. The Corps is seeking additional board members to facilitate the needed and anticipated growth. If you have a desire to see the drum corps activity expand in Florida and you have experience in fund raising, business management or posses high level organizational skills we want to hear from you. Interested persons should contact the Sun Devils. Board of Directors e-mail contact: drum-corps@hotmail.com Corps Director e-mail contact: sundevilscorps@aol.com or call 352-481-2324 More news: The Sun Devils will announce Open House plans by the end of Sept. It will be tenatively near the end of November or first week in December. This will be run in conjunction with our banquet and awards dinner. 2009 Show announcements will be made at that time. The Sun Devils will also be seeking DCI All-Age Exhibition status in 2009 and hope to perform at DCI-Atlantic shows as well as DCA South Shows and DCA Championships. Mini-Corps and Winter Guard: We would like to form seperate units of Mini-corps and Winter Guard to be part of the Sun Devil Family. Mini-Corps would perform at many Florida events and even take a shot at DCA Mini-corps competition. Winter Guard could compete in FFCC Florida Competitions as an independant WGI style group. Anyone interested may contact the membership manager: Membership e-mail
