  1. b**bs Not a problem, :) at least your heads not in a jar. Get it? Jarhead ! ! ! b**bs (just in case some of you don't know, that is what some people ^0^ call the USMC.)
  2. All things considered, SCV. No doubt. If you go by style, it would be one corps, music, another, and tradition yet another. But when you add it up, SCV. Although there were a few all girls corps I would consider. I know marching in a skirt would take some getting used to, but the bus rides,,,,,,,,,,,,,'nuff said.
  3. Wouldn't he have gotten change back from the $5 if he had bought the girl? Hey, I couldn't let that one get buy and to be honest, I am not even sure what guard he is refering to. BD? Oh, in that case, he wouldn't had to get his wallet out at all. b**bs Hey, just kidding again.
  4. This is just my opinion of 1980 finals, and let's all remember, that's 24 years ago. As far as the Bridgemen, loved the antics but I don't recall them being known for the M&M. Spirit, with all the emotions and the seats that spelled out Jim Ott, that hornline was LOUD. Other than that, really don't recall much more of their show that night. 27th, what can you say, they were what they were and they did it well. The one word I would use to describe them, TRADITION. One of those corps I loved to watch, but to be honest, not a corps from a show perspective I would like to march. Blue Devils, WOW! Their show that night just blew me away. Didn't get to see them too often that year, but at finals, WOW! I had 27th winning finals till I saw BD. I also loved Madison that night, but can't recall Phantom that night. In fact, I don't recall them at all that year. Again, a corps I didn't get to see often. I would have put them in this order: 1. Blue Devils 2. 27th 3.Spirit 4. Madison 5. Bridgemen On a side note, since somebody mentioned politics, I remember that all season Boston beating us. (Royal Crusaders) Our director, Gary Inks, told us not to worry about them that DCI was boosting their score to keep them going, they were pretty close to folding if I recall. Going into Birmingham, we had ourselves in 13th or 14th according to who we were beating and who were beating us. Prelims we were 24th and guess who was 25th? Yep, Boston. B)
  5. WOW! so close. BATCOM? It is COMBAT. That is the official name of the 29 Palms D&B>
  6. Here's an easy one, maybe. mainer procs ari unrodg actomb teencr rmud dan blueg copsr.
  7. Les Chatelaines De Laval Yep, I got it. Only took me an hour of searching.
  8. It just hit me, Chantallienes, something like that, right.
  9. Les Chavellalea De Saint Is the Les and De right at least?
  10. Not that you don't see it today, but back in the '70's, you would see more entire families marching in a corps. For a few years, I had 2 sisters and a brother all marching together. As far as "feeder" corps, a lot of corps had them. I guess they still do today, they just call them class II and III and DCA. B) What would happen with the feeder corps I knew was that the open class corps would need one more silk, bari or bass drummer and they would pull the best kid from their feeder corps. In fact, some kids in the feeder corps, mainly the ones that started very young were better polayers and marchers than the members of the big corps.
  11. On the east coast, these are considered shower facilities at any Cab's show.
  12. Very impressive yet extremely sad list. Just let me add this name, Col. Truman Crawford on horns.
  13. I have a dream that comes to me quite often. 1991 DCA finals, Scranton, Pa. I am filling in a spot for Steel City. It's the day before prelims and I am still 500 miles from home. (Butler, Pa.) Maybe I should mention that I am a trucker. I push on through the night arriving home at 2AM. Set the alarm for 4:30AM, just giving me enough time to drive the 5 hours onto Scranton, just in time to make prelims. Wake up at 10AM and realize I could never make it in time. :( Then it hits me, it's not a dream at all. :sshh:
  14. As far as question #15, I think I should win something for at least getting Cosmo right. As far as the other two names mentioned, was one of them playing with Cavs? Jimmie Reese want to Cavs after GBV and I recall it was because his room mate at Edinboro was playing keyboards there. As far as the KFC Guardsmen drum color question, if you look at the 1992 DCI yearbook, they have a "look back at the past" segment. The snares and tymps are a dark color (B&W photo) but the tenors are what appears to be chrome.
  15. Bashing? These are the facts and nothing but the facts as I know them to be. Anyway, what is DCI-borg going to do? My marching days are long over. :P
  16. What I was trying to say was that the director of the AIO would not let DCI sanction the show, therefore, DCI had no choice but to schecule DCI member corps to shows that were sanctioned. If the director would have left DCI sanction the AIO, then the AIO would have gotten the top corps. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In this case the decision not to let the AIO become DCI sanctioned. B)
  17. How about Bill Lutz? I know he competed in I&E comps with GB Vagabonds.
  18. Yeah, it does. And the saddest part of it is, I always wanted to have that talk with him . . . but it's never gonna happen. He passed away in 1990. :( Still, nearly 20 years after the crush and its aftermath, I met a pretty neat fellow, and we've been married almost seven years now. So things have a way of working out. My regret was going to be that I never got to experience DCI finals. (unless you count Steel City doing exhibtion at 1990 finals in Buffalo). I don't regret the corps I marched with, just the fact we never made finals. I think 23rd is the closest I got. But after reading your post Byline, I have to say it was not pursuing the one true love of my life. She was a real close friend in corps and high school. She was a trumpet/sop player. She played in Catholic Daughters of America D&B corps and was a soloist. We even went together to finals in 1981 in Montreal. I just never wanted to ruin the great relationship we had as friends. I would often wonder if she felt the same about me as I did her. Years later I would out that she did. Even though I am happily married with a great son, I still think about what could have been.
  19. I am only married to a Rocket alum's daughter, never played with them. b**bs
  20. Question 15, are the names Gus Barbaro or James Reese part of the answer?
  21. I remeber of few of those pics, like the colorguard member with the arm sling and the solo sop player. Are the BW shots from drum corps news? Thanks for sharing, brought back some good memories.
  22. Sure, the director of the GB Vagabonds is a true asset to the drum corps world. A member of the HOF, founder of several corps, orginizer of one of the most successful drum corps show (AIO), and just a real good person. However, those who know him, know he is always in charge. He doesn't play 2nd fiddle to anyone. Back around 1981 or so, DCI wanted the AIO to become a DCI sanctioned show. The "Big A" as we called him was not going to let DCI tell him how to run his show. So DCI kept all of the top corps from going to Butler. One year, Suncoast Sound had a Butler connection with a few members. DCI had them scheduled to appear at another show close by the same night as the AIO. They pulled out of the DCI show claiming transportation woes and came to Butler, winning by a landslide and collecting 1st place prize money, wich was many times more than what they would have gotten at the DCI show.
  23. OK, I know you meant competition field, but I always love to tell this story. Steel City practice field. :) Rick Morey setting drills spot. b**bs His wife Barb is playing sop. B) Rick decides to get a little frisky as he approaches Barb. b**bs Reaches around from behind her and grabs one. b**bs b**bs b**bs OOPS, it's not wife, it's Tracey, a rookie. :sshh: I will tell you that both women are built about the same, but come on Rick, tell the truth. Did you really think Tracey was Barb?
  24. As far as the American International Open in Butler, no need to put an ounce of blame on DCI, anyone who knows why it doesn't exist anymore, knows exactly who is to blame.
