  1. thats a very interesting way of doing drop spins but would it work for speed spins/peggy spins? would the technique differ because the flag isnt going at straight up and down vertical "angles" and instead going down vertically, to an angle, to up vertically and to an angle again? if that even makes sense to you. i agree with one of the previous posts, the instructor most likely did it in order to emphasie what you should do but it is not necessary to do them so drastically. it would help to just make the interval between you hands smaller but to to exactly as he/she does. sorry f this was just a repetition of the other responses
  2. you started at 19? wow i feel alot better. i thought ppl who started late didnt really get far. i know ppl who have done it for 8 years and i felt pretty bad about my chances to make dci/dca. i really a have a passion for it and was hoping that it would affect it. you guys are so hardcore. youve been doing this for so long, i hope i can make it in the dci/dca world. :) with luck and ALOT of practice
  3. i am a newbie, ive been doing guard for two years which to many readers here who are hardcore vets, it may seem very dumb for me try for dci. but if you met me in person and watched me do my thing, you wouldnt be so quick to judge(not saying that you are). ive learned as much as i could possiblely learn here as i high schooler, i spent like 2 hours a day after practice earlier from 3:30 to 5:30, so i spend 4 hours a day working on this everyday. i am totally dedicated to guard, i work til i get it and refuse to let anything stop me. in my two years ive went from nothing to being the one of best on our guard, our guard winning three superiors at sound of silver invitational and mceachern. im not very boastful, i love to be a member of the guard and will tell u now im not the best guard girl youll ever meet, expected i guess from just being on 2 years but i want to be the best i can. i want to try out for dci, spirit specifically and one day crown, but am currently setting my goals for dca alliance. im not sure if they will accept me and just throw me out instantly when i say ive been doing it for two years. i know ppl w corp experience get preference over newbies and ppl with more experience get preferred as well but i am hoping that the fact that i can compete with and sometimes do better than ppl who have been doing it up to 8 years will impress them and perhaps give me an upperhand. i love guard and am probably one of the most dedicated fanatics you will find. i just want to keep on doing what i love best after high school, guard is truly my life and its all i have. im hoping some of you vets will give advice to an aspiring dci/dca member. i dont wanna seem braggy to anyoneat all, i wish i could personally show you my ability to learn quickly and my passion but i guess explainin it is the only way i could do so online. i love guard and want nothing more than to take it to the next level so any advice, or help as to what i should practice to prepare for tryouts or what to expect, it is HIGHLY encouraged. im just a noob trying to bring my passion to the next level. please dont think im braggy or a snob, i promise im not. just lookin for some help from some highly experienced members. thank you!
  4. Ty, no matter what anyone tells you, your gonna go for phantom. so just go for it and stop being bipolar. ive heard you, youve got the potential and heart for it and they may refuse you at first but tryout again if they do because its obvious that you wont take no for an answer and that your set on it. so go for it my heart is set on spirit and thats my main goal. go for your goal. trust me, i know you and you wont stop til you do so go nike and just do it. <3
  5. he means take someone to see a show of a marching band then to a drump corp show and ask them the difference. because they havent experienced it before, they can give an unbiased answer as to what an outsider sees is the difference. i basically said the same thing he did. did it make sense?
  6. animal, i have heard before that you dont hink woodwinds could be loud enough for dci which is true for the more "windy" sounding instruments, clarinets, flutes, alto sax. but for the low reeds such as bass clarinet or bari sax, it all depends on the musician as to if the are loud enough. true, they can not get as loud as brass but they do deserve an honorable mention. if given the corerect musician, you could include them into dci but it would ruin the all brass feel. dci's major difference from marching band in my opinion is style. dci has a more professional, precise style. horns up, correct posture which with woodwind instruments such as the bari or bass clarinet or even regular clarinet to do not look the same or give the same feel and are more often that not wrongly executed. no offense to any woodwind players reading, i myself am i woodwind player and have only seen wrongly executed postures by all the musicians i have viewed. but the difference in my opinion id dci has a more professional feel, with a set sense of style and organization. which some highs school marching bands can obtain but its a less formal feel. i personally prefer corps to marching bands just because their more competitive formality and the fact that eveery there worked to be there and wants to. but im new to the whole dci thing, experiencing more of marching band at the present time than corps.
  7. ive always love dthe spirit shows, their style just clicks w me. their verision of "Georgia" (name prolly messed up but i think its called georgia on my minnd) so BEAUTIFUL! downloaded it to my ipod as SOON as i heard it. i just got started into the dci world, a year ago i didnt even know it existed (!) but im trying to learn as much about it as possible. the stories the vets tell are totally impressive. i hope to make it into dci, specifically spirit, so badly so if anyone has any advice for a rook, much appreciate. spirit's shows and specifically guard has always been my favorite. i like phantom and cadets but spirit has a better feel to it. but i may be just aweird newbie to all things dci so dont think im crazy. i just found this website and am going spastic. its crazy how these things are so hidden from the rest of the world, you guys have your own little world (hence drum corp lanet lol). i love it!
  8. wow you guys are some hard core vets. i am just a senior in high school, hoping to make it in the dci scene. wow if any of you could give advice, it would be so much appreciated. my lame story compared to all of yours: our family started out rather low income and i was like a MAJOR guard fanatic but from the sidelines because i could afford it. i didnt get to start guard until last year but am one of the fast learning in our band. our band last year didnt even get a whole show on the field and performed twice the whole season at halftime, getting booed off the field both times. this year, im the senior member on guard taking on many protegees and we won superior at all three comps we went to. yay! yeah a lame marchin band story, no good dci story or anything. thats it. its lame but im trying super super hard. seriously, if any of you vets have advice, im a rook looking for someone who i can be an aprrentice to.
  9. hey i was considering trying out for the guard section this season but im only 17 and have no previous corp experience. would i still have a chance or would trying out be pointless? i really love ur corp and the theme but im not sure if my lack of experience will cause a problem.
