  1. If it creates more units who are willing to spend the $ to attend regionals and potentially WGI Championships, then yes, I think they can and should at least consider it. Maybe do like they sometimes do and ask local circuits to try it out first (like with the digital recording) to see if it will work out. I'd like to see how/if this has any impact on the numbers of guards and guard units--but potentially also for percussion units in the future, and if it will affect drumcorps in any way-- maybe people staying with their college group more than auditioning for corps (because of the economy)? Would it then create more demand for lifting age restrictions in independent classes since the prospect of losing members to the local college team could become a concern? etc...
  2. Awesome, Pat! Looking forward to seeing you at the event!
  3. Thanks All! By the way: We are planning to put a "program" together to hand out to the audience at the show. If anyone has a drum corps, winterguard, percussion, or music related business or product, or just wants to show support by purchasing an ad, please contact fundraiser@austinstars.org. Prices start as low as $10 for a business card-sized ad. All the corps will get a free full-page "ad" for participating! You'll all get info about that sometime after this weekend.
  4. Due to an influx of horn players we are in need of the following horns tuned in Bb (b-flat). 1 contra 3 sopranos 2 mellos/marching french horns 2 baritone/euphoniums If anyone is looking to rent some extra horns, loan them out for the summer, or sell them via a payment plan, please PM me or contact Michael Vazquez, Austin Stars Corps Director at corps.director @ austinstars . org (no spaces). Thank you!
  5. Join Austin Stars as we take the field in 2009! Austin Stars is the only competitive drum corps in central Texas! We have a relaxed schedule and only rehearse on weekends- so your week is free for work, take classes, or spend time with your family. Dues are only $475, which includes transportation to shows in Atlanta, GA, and Rochester, NY. Spots available for battery and pit percussion for our show "Footsteps of a Soldier". Our April Camp is THIS SATURDAY April 18,2009 at Rouse HS in Leander, TX. If you are competing in Dayton for WGI championships, we wish you the best! Join us on May 2, 2009, which is our next camp weekend! For more information, visit our website at http://austinstars.org or contact our corps director at corps.director@austinstars.org
  6. If you build it, they will come. If you expect it, they will make it happen!
  7. We did something a little different this year: we contacted the corps PRIOR to setting the date to verify whether they could make it or not. We then changed the date to that which was most accommodating to all corps. So, it's taking place a little later this year than it normally does, but it will still be the first opportunity of the year to see/hear all the current TX corps in one place!
  8. June 20, 2009 is the date of the event. Mystikal will not be in attendance this year due to schedule conflicts. :-( They are hoping to join us in 2010!
  9. Rennaissance Drum and Bugle Corps from York, PA ,is focusing mostly on building an indoor percussion line and adding on different sections as interest grows. They have a facebook group and their website is http://www.renaissancedbc.com/rdbc/index.php. Many of their members over the past few years have come from Maryland, and have included members as young as 10, I believe.
  10. The Austin Stars Performing Arts Association is proud to announce the 2009 Texas Drum Corps Preview! This event will incorporate stand-still performances from the following groups (in alphabetical order): Austin Stars (DCA) Crossmen (DCI) Frontier (DCA) Gulf Coast Sound (DCA) Memphis Sound (newly relocated to Dallas/Fort Worth area!) (DCI) Revolution (DCI) World Gone Mad (Independent) We are still awaiting word from Mystikal Drum and Bugle Corps (DCI), which now has roots in Texas as well! More information will be released and posted to austinstars.org as the event draws closer. Put it on your calendar now! If you are interested in sponsoring the event, please contact Michael J. Vazquez, corps director at corps.director@austinstars.org edited for stupid typos :-P
  11. Join Austin Stars on Saturday, April 18 from 9 am-6 pm! We are still accepting members in all sections. Visit our website at austinstars.org to fine out more information! Also, we would like to say... Congratulations to ATX Winterguard, our Independent A class colorguard for achieving a bronze medal at Texas Color Guard Circuit championships!
  12. Thanks Jenn :-) We're bringing back that same talent level, but hopefully with more people! Spots still open in all sections! Swing by sometime :-D That is an open invitation to everyone, by the way!
  13. Austin Stars is still seeking brass players to fill out our line for the 2009 season. No drum corps experience is necessary, although it is helpful! Membership is open to ANYONE 16+ years of age who wants to learn how to march corps style, get training for marching DCI, or who can't afford DCI tour fees One local corps is asking their members to pay almost $3000 for the summer! Our fees are just over 1/10 of that! We also offer fundraising opportunities, weekend-only rehearsals, and experienced and dedicated staff! Come check out Austin Stars! http://austinstars.org
  14. We're doing our best to make sure we have the numbers to get to DCA! We're still recruiting through the winter guard/drumline season, and hope to get them in here after WGI championships the first weekend in April. Only time will tell! But we're getting some positive feedback, so hopefully that turns into actual backs, and fronts, and horns and stuff :-)
  15. I have to agree. Sometimes it's weeks or months before we have time to update our website, but we try to do it within a week after every camp (in the winter), and once a month in the busy and off-season. We run and maintain our own website, so it gets kind of hectic at times! One thing that bothers me is going to a guard's or corps website that shows information from 2008. It's 2009! Winterguard season is about 1/2 way finished already! Corps have had camps and should have their instructors by now! Let's see an update! If I don't see current information--at least something within the past month or two, I tend to think something is wrong w/the program (on hiatus? not coming out this year? financial problems?, etc).
  16. Austin Stars is currently recruiting heavily for the 2009 Drum Corps season. Spots are available in all sections! Please visit the updated Austin Stars website at austinstars.org, our Facebook group, and our Facebook Fan Page. Dues this year are under $500, which includes transportation to Atlanta, GA, and to DCA Championships in Rochester, NY on Labor Day Weekend. We also have fundraisers set up throughout the year to help reduce the cost to members! Rehearsals are weekends only! Friday night sectionals and Saturday full-corps rehearsals! We will be competing in 3 Texas DCA shows (Austin Drum Corps Preview, Dallas Show, Houston show). Membership is open to high school and college students age 16+ who might want an alternative to a full summer DCI tour, or who can't afford DCI Tour and audition fees. DCA is an "all age" circuit, so those who have aged out but still want to march are welcome to join as well! The staff has a great, fun show designed, but we need people to perform it! Join us in showing DCA what kind of talent there is in central Texas! March Camps: March 7 and March 21. Come to one or both! Entire schedule is on the austinstars.org website! Mike Vazquez Director Austin Stars Drum and Bugle Corps

Dues cost includes transportation (bus/van) to Atlanta, GA, for DCA South Championships and to Rochester, NY, for DCA World Championships! 20. Maybe someone who has "grown" tremendously since they first got one? Or someone in financial trouble?
