  1. Hey has anyone ever noticed this? 78 and 08 are not parallel, but everything else is.... 1977 Blue Devils - 1st place 1978 Blue Devils - 3rd place 1979 Blue Devils - 1st place 1980 Blue Devils - 1st place 1981 Blue Devils - 2nd place ------------------------ 2007 Blue Devils - 1st place 2008 Blue Devils - 2nd place 2009 Blue Devils - 1st place 2010 Blue Devils - 1st place 2011 Blue Devils - 2nd place (Enter Twilight Zone Music here)
  2. OK..........................now you are trying to get the debate fuled here. There ae pletnty of G7 related threads out there....lets keep this one on topic and if you want, go dig up an old G7 thread or start one of your own. This thread is about the Blue Devils. Not Dave Gibbs and his proposals.
  3. Hey seriously though. Think real hard about what you did. You could ask your question as "politely" as you want but to view this from Dave Gibbs shoes....viewing you as a complete stranger stopping me in public with a controversial question like that, I (or anyone) would see your "question" as for no other purpose than to start trouble or create an argument. Sure, talk to him if you are really wanting answers but there is a time, a place and a way to do it appropriately and THAT was not it AT ALL. So no, I'm not surprised he responded the way he did. I would have too.
  4. Naaah. If I were a Blue Devil, my post would have been all chill and sound more like this.... Yo doooode so like...maybe like Gibbs was like "whoooaaaah dooode, does this guy have a question on directions or somethin...like maybe he needs to go somewhere narly or somethin so maybe I should give em whats up like ya know holmes"...but then you were all like controversial and Gibbs just like "whoooooaaaah dooode...like that's deeep....like I aint got time for all that so peace out holmes".
  5. Oh Geee! Yeah, like you really gave him a fair opportunity at a less than akward time in a less than akward location to answer your VERY AKWARD "question" (if you can even call it that). Hell, I would turn and walk away from you too. He's in the lot of a fricken DRUM CORPS SHOW! The man is busy and you corner him with a LOADED and CONFRONTATIONAL question which really only serves to give him the 3rd degree? HEY! The man smiled at you and said "I'll do my best". But if you think he's just going to drop everything he is doing to run a drum corps in the middle of a season to answer your LOADED and CONFRONTATIONAL question, you are living under a ROCK! GET REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd at best say that the man was polite in JUST walking away. If it were me I would have started with giving you the BIRD!
  6. I just posted this on another thread and I thought I would do so here as well. I went to http://madisonscouts...couts/Home.html and noticed that there are a LOT of 2012 announcements such as "staff additions", "tour schedules" and such, but no announcement or even a mention about the show. I have a very strong feeling that the Facebook post was pre-mature and not a complete representation of what this show will really be.
  7. If I may go back off the main subject for a minute and back to the 2012 show, I went to http://madisonscouts...couts/Home.html and noticed that there are a LOT of 2012 announcements such as "staff additions", "tour schedules" and such, but no announcement or even a mention about the show. I have a very strong feeling that the Facebook post was pre-mature and not a complete representation of what this show will really be.
  8. I'll stand firm on what I said. I certainly would not call it "jazz" either. Perhaps that's where the "Madisonized" idea comes into play. Most wouldn't call it "symphonic" because it was approached and arranged in such a way that made it "Madison". Yet, when you do enough homework to see what the source music really was, you find yourself surprised that it really was symphonic. That's why I find myself in disagreement with the user who have stated that when Madison does symphonic, they omit their identity and make themselves like every other drum corps. Granted, there are a couple of rough years where that may be the case (I'll agree with 2007...even though some of even THAT was more "jazz), most of what they do of a symphonic nature is well done and approached in a way that holds true to their identity,
  9. 10. The Blue Devils are a great drum corps. One of the greatest in the world - regardless of what anyone thinks. Many of those that hate them (notice I didn't say "all"), only hate them out of jealousy - which is quite sad.
  11. Very true, and again - "symphonic" doesn't just mean "classical". Heck, I would even consider THIS "symphonic" (as it's full orchestra...written as a "Pops Symphony" and PLAYED by a "Major Symphony Orchestra")... honic" No, it's not "classical", but undoubtably "syphonic" in it's instrumentation and arrangement.
  12. As I've mentioned a few times already, I really do have a feeling from rumors I've heard (from multiple sources) that the 2012 Madison show will not be exclusively "Pictures At An Exhibition". I'll bet money that there is more of Madison's typical "jazz flavored" music in it than Pictures itself. Time will tell I guess. Back to the topic now (regardless of what they are playing this year), what are some others that would work for the Scouts?
  13. I think a few people might be confused as to it's definition and the reason why is because the user I was originally responding to who had a more negative outlook on the subject used the term "classical" music. "Classical" is not the only form of music that is "symphonic". The definition I have always subscribed to is that which is also harmonious with the Webster's definition (http://www.merriam-w...onary/symphonic) and that is (if I may paraphrase) any form of music that is written and or arranged for orchestra (or wind band in the case of an ensemble void of strings). It is NOT limited to just "classical". This would even include "pops orchestra" works as well as "jazz written for full orchestra" (hence the sometimes used term - "symphonic jazz"). I would also add (in response to corpsband's post) that if you look at #3 in the Webster's link above (i.e., : suggestive of a symphony especially in form, interweaving of themes, or harmonious arrangement), this would undoubtably include film scores/soundtracks written for full orchestra. With that in mind, lets look closer at the 1997 Madison rep. A piece called "Tall Ships Suite" was used in this show. Take a look at the details of this piece (performed by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra) http://www.arkivmusi...1641bdf42157a55 Ironically, this is even labled under the genre of "classical" (which is a term I even showed "symphonic music" wasn't limited to). YES, this piece is undoubtably "symphonic". Also in the 1997 was "Songs Of The Quay" by Geoff Richards. Look at the info on this piece (ironically again with the word "classical" used) http://www.jerseysho...mouth&Itemid=56 . So, yes. There was a good amount of "symphonic music" used in the 1997 show. Was the entire show symphonic? Maybe not. Though for sure, 2 of the 4 pieces used in the 97 show were symphonic without any doubt in my mind.
  14. What examples of classical/symphonic music has Madison not done well? Not trying to create an argument. I respect your opinion. Just wondering what it is they have done that you didn't like. I tell you what I've noticed from years they have done symphonic music. I don't know that "Madisonized" really means anything more than picking the most intense and aggressive movements with the most accesable melodies and pretty much laying it down as is. Sure, there is "arranging" that takes place that allows for it to work with 60-80 brass and 26-32 percussion but when they do a piece, they seem to do the piece. The difference between them and others is that they don't get weird with it nor do they pick the weirdest movements. Just my opionion. Again, I'm interested in examples of what symphonic music Madison has covered that you have not cared for.
  15. After Madison announcing their 2012 Reframed show and now having watched the last big symphonic season for the Scouts (1997's Pirates show which is AWESOME), I'm sort of on a "Symphonic Madison Kick" now. So I thought I would start this thread. What other symphonic pieces could you and would you want to see Madison do if they were to do more "Madisonized Symphonic music" in future years? I may add more as I think about it but The Canyon by Phillip Glass is one that comes to mind that I could easily see done with a Madison swagger. What are some others besides symphonoic selections that they have done in the past? Which they have done more often than I think most of us realize (83, 87, 88, and 97 to name a few years that I have mentioned in the 2012 thread).
  16. The most like they were in the 80s and 90s: Blue Devils The most powerful crowd reaction: Madison Scouts The most improved: Spirit Of Atlanta The most strange and slightly offensive show concept: Santa Clara Vanguard The most anticlimactic follow up to their 2010 season: Bluecoats
  17. And we have our new "hype corps" for the 2012 season. "Honk Honk!"
  18. As much as I too miss seeing drum corps on TV (either PBS or ESPN), I think with the age we are living in, DCI's push toward a bigger presence in the world of Online Videos is really a better way to go now days. The DCI Fan Network even has a Youtube Channel now that recently put out "highlight's videos" that reminded me very much of the old highlights broadcast. Lets face it, internet video is now running the show - which is why youtube in conjunction with advertisers even offer royalties now for videos that get a high volume of views.
