  1. Interesting replies. To the people saying "Crown's hornline is the best and nobody is better"....you're beng quite presumptuous. Devils and Cadets ARE "dynasties" in the hornline world and should never be counted out. Especially not this year when both of their hornlines appear to be off to a better start than Crown's line. And to the person who sarcastically said "it's all over for them". You're grossly exaggerating my point (surprise surprise, I'm on DCP). I hardly think Crown's hornline will take a nose dive. But just maybe (and I know this is a hard possibility for Crown honks to accept)....just maybe, this might be a 2nd place finish for Crown in brass this year. Oh said it aint so, I know.....the stars will all shift and the moon will not give it's light if that happens.... (can't we just turn the overhype off for one thread and have a discussion?)
  2. Yeah, so back to the question - where are the videos? I'd like to see a few. If anyone has any, please post. Thank you.
  3. Am I the only one who feels as though Crown's hornline is maybe not quite what they have been the last few years? I know it's early. But I'm always very impressed with how their hornline plays even this early and so far, it's not quite hitting me the way it usually does. Is it just me? Maybe part of it is just that they don't seem to play as much. A lot of time with the horns off the faces for "effect". Seems unlike them....
  4. Yeah, it's going to be fricken hot again tomorrow.
  5. Ok, was confused because I've seen plenty of pictures of the all black uniforms and that white think draped over the top of their jackets confused me.
  6. Fixed...BUT HEY! My point was valid. LOL. I said "if"......(yeah, I'll keep trying to "retract" as I take my foot out of my mouth. LOL)
  7. Right, because the Madison Scouts with their 2 DCI world championships and swift recovery from an almost fallout to being right back into a strong consistency where they have not gone down in placement in the last 4 years shows no "tradition of excellence". Wanna rethink that one?
  8. That's funny. I've seen videos from several top corps from rehearsals including The Blue Devils and I have not seen ONE!
  9. OMG! have you seen all of the drum corps rehearsal videos floating around with all of the trombones and sousaphones??!?!?! Oh wait.........that's right......I haven't seen ANY!!!! And the "drum corps doomsdayers" cry wolf...........yet again.
  10. That's really all you are going to see with all brass! Solos and small ensembles...no full sections all the way through the show. BET ME!
  11. Bear in mind something. Based on history, any major change in hornline instrumentation ALWAYS comes with adjustment. And that adjustment takes time (and is generally an added financial burden to even the corps that support the change). With that being said, I think we are very foolish if we think that this all brass change is going to quickly and swiftly usher in woodwinds in the near future. If anything, it will likely hold woodwind's back even longer. Lets look at the history. Late 70s (I believe it was 1978 but correct me if I'm wrong) 2 Valved G bugles were legalized. 12 years passed In 1990 - 3 valved G bugles were legalized 10 years passed In 2000 Bb/Any key brass were legalized 14 years passed In 2014 All Brass was legalized So if we look at the history of the time gaps between "hornline instrumentation overhauls". the absolute SHORTEST time period was 10 years. Strangely, the time gap for the most recent change took the LONGEST of any. So I see absolutely no reason to believe that this all brass change will do anything but lengthen the time gap between that and woodwinds being legalized. Will woodwinds eventually come? I don't think anyone doubts it. But it will not happen for at least another 10 years. "Why?" Just look at the history (and history repeats itself). Even Hopkins's famous "woodwinds in drum corps interview" quoted him saying in June 2012s "we recently added electronics, so it may be a bit too soon to talk about woodwinds" (somewhat paraphrased off the top of my head memory). So even he gets that adjusting to an overhaul takes time. So no way! BECAUSE OF.....this recent "all brass" change, we won't see woodwinds for at LEAST another 10 years (maybe longer). Quite certain of that. Oh, and those of you worrying about sousaphones. NOBODY in the staffs/design teams have any interest. They are hideous in quality compared to contras and everybody knows it. Sousas are also cheaper....which some erroneously think will mean they will be inserted even faster. WRONG! Manufacturing companies make money from corps re-selling and endorsing their products to band programs...and they want to sell THEIR MOST EXPELSIVE products the most. Furthermore, even BOA is getting away from them. In fact, BOA is getting away from trombone "sections". Many of the top 12 band programs only use trombones for an occasional effect....which from what I gather, is all any of the designers are really interested in with DCI and even Madison (who proposed the rule) appears to only be using them in a small ensemble setting. I digress....as for sousaphones...you will NEVER see a full section of them in ANY top DCI World Class Corps. The only thing you MIGHT see a sousaphone used for is in a solo or small ensemble for novelty (Spirit Of Atlanta doing Dixieland maybe or now that Jersey Surf is using the VK/Bridgemen persona....a "gag" use possibly). I think we are making a mountain out of a mohill.
  12. Which is why I think it will be a while before we see it at this point. I was actually expecting it to be next. This one took me by complete surprise and at this point I think they will have a lot of years to get used to it and max out it's use. I strongly believe we have a while before woodwinds and I honestly didn't think that a month ago.
  13. Exactly what I was saying. I believe it will happen too. But based on the pattern we've seen with 10 years being the shortest span between a major "hornline instrument overhaul", I think it will be a lot further down the road than people expect. Their window of opportunity would have been perfect this year but they chose all brass instead.
  14. And when was the last time you saw a woodwind instrument used in a pre-show. Uhhh........never.
  15. Well that would certainly be a first considering the fact that it took 12 years to go from legalizing 2 valves to 3 valves, 10 years to go from legalizing 3 valves to Bbs and then 14 years to go from Bbs to legalizing all brass. Based on those patterns, I strongly doubt woodwinds are as close as you think. If anything, this proposal might prolong the inclusion of woodwinds. Careful what you wish for (or wish away).
  16. Just watched several different videos of it. The sound of that soprano line. Nothing like it. That's all I've got. The end.
