Tomorrow night’s show from Quincy will be broadcast on Flo but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it taking place, at least from a competitive point of view. The weather forecast is pretty lousy.

Can't you talk to your boss about that? 😉

    Please and thank you.

The guard costuming and the musicians costuming don’t make sense together. One is theatrical and one is very modern marching band.

I think once you see the show on the field it may make more sense. At least I think it does. And I'm a traditionalist fan of the red & black.

I think they do. Personally I like what I see and at heart I’m a bring back the red and black kind of guy, so that’s saying a lot. The musician uniforms make up the color of the sea creating a backdrop and the guard tells the story. At least that’s how I see it, but no one has ever consulted me on uniform design, or any design for that matter.

It makes me sad to see the corps wearing a blue uniform, but I think they look really good and work for the show in a lot of ways. Especially the way that everything drops and hangs it reminds me of someone who drowned having sea weed stuck to them.
Which is very thematic for a Moby Dick show.

Though its always been in years past where guard is the big story telling prop and the hornline is background. See basically every show since 17.

    I would agree with @Tim K

and @fighterkit about the red and black.

However, having seen the full run through (without uniforms/costumes) at Castleton Community Night, the color choice makes total sense especially after seeing the current ending.

Saw some stuff from last night and tonight. They look and sound absolutely amazing. Some minor issues here and there but for where they are in the season its gonna be amazing.
For those who know me you should know how I feel about the competitive success of this show, but Im not gonna jinx it just yet

Please wait until August 13th. 😉🤣

    Thanks!

Just about to start ( 7pm EST ) if forecasted showers have cleared out there . Forecast is for diminished chances of showers to single digits by 8pm . So maybe a delay if it still is rainy . Some DCP’ers will be there . Craiga will be there .

The sky cleared up nicely, the wind died down and the temperature was comfortable about 90 minutes before the show.

Stands were full. The merch stand was doing a brisk business.

Im not going to predict where they will place. There's just too many things outside of the corps control. I do know they'll be better and more enjoyable than last year.

For those who don't know, today marks the beginning of move-in at Castleton College in Castleton, Vermont.   The section leaders, drum majors, battery percussion  and front ensemble should all be there by sometime tonight.   The brass and guard arrive on Monday.

It is an awesome facility,  surrounded by the Green Mountains on all sides, and is enhanced by the fact that the members and staff eat three meals a day (all you can eat buffet style) in the campus dining hall, and the members sleep in the adjacent dorms.   Staff sleeps in the faculty dorm.   The kitchen truck is there and will provide the second dinner, usually at 10pm every night. One of the gyms is the home space for the guard and also provides space for corps meetings, sexual harassment training, etc and the other is taken up completely by the outgoing and incoming percussion equipment.  Adjacent to the percussion Gym is the uniform room on one side and the medical room on the other, where Dr. Vivien and her team of medical interns set up. There also a large, windowed room with about a dozen folks sitting at a huge boardroom style table all with laptops.   These are the admin folks, media team,  merchandise team, and the rest of the corps office staff who essentially move from Hyde Park to Vermont for the duration of spring training.

The stadium is quaint, but is artificial turf with nice aluminum seating and decent early season height for the staff.

Within walking distance is "downtown" Castleton,  with the famous Blue Cat Bistro and the really cool pizza "Third Place" and literally one gas station with two pumps.

Boston's first shows are July 1st and 2nd in Lynn and Quincy, MA, and so it begins. I hope to visit for the first time 5/30-6/1. I am trying to thread the needle between my hs band's Memorial Day Parade on that Monday and our drum major auditions that Thursday.

I am looking forward to being there with them, and will do my best to post daily updates in real time, which readers here can believe or not. 😉

I think this is our 8th or 9th year here, and the kids call this home.   They even have named some of the nearby mountains. I am so glad the time has come.

2014 was the corps' first year in Castleton. Thanks to Patrick Refsnider for finding it

That's hilarious.  It reminds me of my dad's stories of dispatch agents for his job who were in Georgia trying to pronounce some of the small towns in Indiana and Ohio that had indigenous language origins like Wapakoneta, Mishawaka, Osceola, Mississenewa, Walkarusa.

And I was waiting for Worcester to show up...heh

I think you mean Woostah or is it Wusstah?

  11. Congratulations to Rick Woodall, one of DCI's Volunteers of the Year!!

    Rick Woodall
    Boston Crusaders

    Rick Woodall

    Rick Woodall

A volunteer member of Boston Crusaders’ board of directors and longtime manager of its touring “fleet” of vehicles, Rick Woodall has devoted more than 20 years of his life to supporting the Boston corps and its mission to provide a positive educational experience.

Referred to by Boston Crusaders COO and executive director Chris Holland as the “grandfather” of the corps’ members and staff, Woodall has made a point to know and support the many individuals who have participated in various aspects of the organization.

“He knew the name and background of every member,” Holland said. “He was a central figure and organizer for the parent volunteers. Rick’s spirit and leadership extended to the administration team and teaching staff. All who interacted with him walked away more inspired and more connected to the mission.”

Holland, who described Woodall’s nomination for Volunteer of the Year as “long overdue,” emphasized the positive attitude and influence Woodall has brought to the corps in each and every year of his involvement, even despite recent medical challenges.

“Whenever he is on campus, the members and staff flock to him for a fist bump, a hug, and usually a selfie,” Holland said.

“Rick’s ability to communicate has been impacted by his illness, but he can text and his eyes and body language are easy to read,” he added. “His love of the corps keeps him going. His love of the activity keeps him going. And make no mistake, he is still a person who brings volunteers together.”

Planting finals in Indy has always irked me, since it was nothing more than a single stop on tour BITD at best. How much more do west coast corps pay just to get out there? And what advantages does that provide corps that are established closer? But I think DCI and LOS have an ongoing contract for ... ever?? How many more years?

I've seen this mileage/cost argument come up from time to time so this isn't directed at you specifically, @scheherazadesghost. But your post prompted me to do a quick comparison.

Taking the best corps on the west coast and the beast from the east and using the 2023 schedule, as is currently published on the DCI website........

Blue Devils - 9771 miles ; Boston Crusaders 8246 miles

However, if you eliminate "in home state only" travel (for example Lynn, MA to Quincy, MA or Fresno, CA to Pasadena, CA), the difference is only 298 miles. BD - 8497 miles; BAC - 8199 miles
