  6. Greetings, all! For over a year now I have hosted Sketchbook Podcast which focuses on creativity, preparation, & effort with artists, creators, & educators. This past weekend I interviewed composer, conductor, & arranger, Will Pitts. Will was the program coordinator and brass arranger for the Phantom Regiment from 2016-2019 and was the brass arranger for the Spirit of Atlanta in 2015. While we do dive into biographical stuff, and what he is doing now, we do discuss the 2019 production, "I Am Joan." Will was very forthcoming about the experiences of the summer, putting the show together, and his time as a designer with the corps. He was extremely honest about his successes and his faults. We do address the controversies about the show design, criticisms about the show, and the growth of the show through the summer. Whether you are a fan of Will or not, I think you will enjoy this episode. Sketchbook Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, & wherever fine podcasts are downloaded. 7. After winning their 2nd DCI world championship in 1995 with their show ‘The Planets,’ The Cavaliers drum & bugle corps fell to 4th in 1996 and dropped to 7th place with their 1997 production, “The Firebird.” The lowest the corps had finished since finishing 8th in 1984. The Cavies then moved back up to 4th place in 1998 and then received the bronze medal in 1999 with their show, “Classical Innovations.” That 1999 show also saw The Chicago Cavaliers taking home their fourth High Percussion Award in the history of the corps, all in the 1990s. In the year 2000… a design team came together that would come to dominate DCI for the better part of the next decade. Led by program coordinator Scott Koter, Michael Gaines designed the drill, Richard Saucedo composed & arranged the brass book, and Bret Kuhn & Erik Johnson composed & arranged the battery & front-ensemble books. The 2000 production, “Niagara Falls,” featured music from and inspired by Niagara Falls by Michael Daugherty, and Waves, from Soundings by Cindy McTee as well as original music by Saucedo, Kuhn, & Johnson. The 2000 season ended with The Cavaliers of Rosemount, IL winning their 3rd DCI world championship, in a tie with The Cadets, as well as winning the John Brazale Best Visual Performance Award, the George Zingali Best Color Guard Performance Award, and the Fred Sanford Best Percussion Performance Award. Joining me today are future DCI Hall of Famers Bret Kuhn and Erik Johnson. Bret served as Caption Head and Percussion Arranger for the Cavaliers who won 6 World Championships and 5 High Percussion Awards during his tenure. From 1995 to 2005 and 2008 to 2010, Erik Johnson was on the instructional staff serving on the design team as the front ensemble arranger and coordinator. On this episode of Musicbook, we discuss The Cavaliers’ 2000 production, “Niagara Falls.” https://anchor.fm/sketchbookpodcast/episodes/Musicbook--Niagara-Falls---The-Cavaliers-Drum--Bugle-Corps-2000--with-Bret-Kuhn--Erik-Johnson-Percussion-Composers--Arrangers-elj3kt
  8. “Proud, Loud, and Pleasing the Crowd.” This is the mantra of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle corps. And it’s safe to say that since 1938, the Scouts have consistently brought audiences to their feet with their entertainment-focused programs. And while the corps had won two DCI world championships, in 1975 & 1988, for some, it was the shows of the 1990s that really solidified the Madison Explorer Scouts as one of, if not the favorite corps in all of DCI. Whether you were an alum of the corps, had a friend or family member that marched the corps, or just a normal fan with or without ties to other drum corps, the Scouts of Madison, Wisconsin was the corps you were always excited to see. Fans didn’t leave their seats to get a hot dog or go to the restroom when the Green & White took the field. The Madison Scouts have had many crowd-pleasing shows throughout their history; we could fill an entire season of episodes focusing on each and every one of these shows. But perhaps no Scouts’ production is more loved than the 1995 production. This show has widely been considered one of the most entertaining drum corps shows of all time and for some, is the hands-down favorite. This opinion was in fact proven scientifically accurate with fans and alums voting the 1995 show as the winner of the 2020 Virtual Drums Along the Parade, with the 1998 championship show coming in 2nd. Joining me today is composer and arranger Scott Boerma, who was the brass composer & arranger for 20+ shows over a span of 4 decades! And who without a doubt I consider to be one of the "Four Horseman of DCI Arrangers.” If there was a Mount Rushmore for DCI Music Arrangers, his face would be one of the first 3 carved. Hey, I can’t seem too biased on these episodes! On this episode of Musicbook, we discuss the Madison Scouts’ 1995 production, “A Drum Corps Fan’s Dream: A Day in the Life of a Bullfighter.” https://anchor.fm/sketchbookpodcast/episodes/Musicbook--A-Drum-Corps-Fans-Dream-A-Day-in-the-Life-of-a-Bullfighter---Madison-Scouts-Drum--Bugle-Corps-1995--with-Scott-Boerma-Brass-Composer--Arranger-ekk4js
  9. For almost a year now I've had a lot of fun interviewing designers, educators, & artists for my podcast, Sketchbook Podcast. Throughout that time there have been 40 guest interviews and two additional series; 'Matchbook' with Jen Barton & 'Sound Advice' with Erik Kosman. Over the last two weeks, I debuted two series; 'Musicbook,' which focused on The Cavaliers 2002 production, "Frameworks," with brass composer & arranger Richard Saucedo and 'Storybook,' which focused on The Cavaliers 2004 production, "007," with program coordinator Scott Koter. Today we continue the '-book' series with 'Dotbook.' My goal with this series is to discuss a show, production, or work and focus on the programming, design, and/or coordination aspect. I would talk with the programmer/coordinator and we could discuss the inspiration, process, edits, cuts, or any other behind the scenes aspects to the show. The first episode of 'Dotbook' focuses on The Cavaliers 2003 production, "Spin Cycle" and my guest is drill designer and visual coordinator Michael Gaines. For anyone out there wanting a more "inside baseball" look at the creative process behind that 2003 championship-worthy show, as well as some insight into Michael's process, you won't want to miss this! https://anchor.fm/sketchbookpodcast/episodes/Dotbook--Spin-Cycle---The-Cavaliers-Drum--Bugle-Corps-2003--with-Michael-Gaines-Drill-Designer--Visual-Coordinator-eju81u

  12. While nothing can replace a summer of Drum Corps International, the Madison Scouts are doing their best by offering a virtual program titled “MadU.” The 2020 Madison Scouts will be working on the progressive jazz masterpiece, “Strawberry Soup” by Don Ellis. This arrangement is the exact version that fans would’ve been able to experience and enjoy this summer live and in person. 13. Part 2 of the interview with Chris Komnick, executive director of the Madison Scouts is now live. Ep. 28, Part 2: Chris Komnick (Executive Director, Madison Scouts D&BC) Here are the questions and topics we addressed in Part 2: Do you read DCP? How are the Madison Scouts financially? Can you discuss the state of the drum corps organizationally and financially when you took over and how it has changed and improved to this day? What are some of the challenges running an organization that has so much tradition, history, expectations, alumni, and yes, vocal supporters and haters? Let’s talk about Majestic? Was this show finally giving the noisiest fans what they wanted; an old school show that they remembered from “back in the day?" Was there a point when y’all realized that things, “weren’t working?" What made y’all decide to list all the available jobs on your website? After the 2019 season, you hired a design team that many would NOT consider to be, “big names.” Jenifo Leseth is arguably the biggest name on the design team has worked with SCV, Carolina Crown, Bluecoats, and the Madison Scouts previously. Noah Bellamy has written for the Troopers. Your arranger, yours truly, while having arranged HALF of a show for the Colts D&BC in 2016, really is more well known for Open Class and Marching Band shows. And while they have achieved massive success in WGI Indoor Percussion & Winds, the percussion arrangers and visual coordinator would be designing at the world-class DCI level for their very first time. Why this team and why not go out there and try to “Boston Crusaders” a design team? With this Corona Reset in DCI, what kind of changes might we possibly see for the future? Favorite Madison Scouts show? Favorite tune the Madison Scouts have played? Favorite non-Madison Scouts show? Will we ever hear the Madison Scouts play Malagueña on the field again? 14. Greetings! For about six months now I have hosted Sketchbook Podcast which focuses on creativity, preparation, & effort with artists, creators, & educators. Part 1 of the interview with Chris Komnick, executive director of the Madison Scouts, releases at midnight on April 13th. I fully realize that to many, Komnick and/or the Scouts tend to incite some polarizing posts and threads. But this episode is drum corps related and so I thought I would make sure to publicize here. Ep. 28, Part 1: Chris Komnick (Executive Director, Madison Scouts D&BC) So that you have an idea of what exactly we talked about, here are the bullet points for Part 1: Personal Profile Life, Education, and career Komnick's path from marching member to executive director. Is drum corps too expensive? Increase in costs, where does the tuition go, & how much does member tuition actually cover. The effects of BAC assembling their "super group" of designers and staff in 2016 & the California Wage & Hour Laws on DCI. Have the two coasts altered the financial landscape of DCI? Does the cancellation of the 2020 season function as a "financial reset" for DCI? The timeline and process behind deciding to become gender-inclusive. To some, this may not seem we got too deep into DCI and/or the Madison Scouts. But I assure you that Part 2 will definitely focus on the highs and lows of the Madison Scouts. Part 2 will release later this week. Sketchbook Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, & wherever fine podcasts are downloaded.
