He is coming home on Saturday, so I can ask him. But I think they extended the final chord in the closer when they are spinning the members. I believe my son said it was extended to 24 seconds. So that could be the change?Ā

I believe they added those extra measures at NightBEAT (which made me VERY happy). But I was definitely expecting some extra layer to be added for Allentown or Indy. Safe travels home to your son!Ā

  2. @Chief GunsĀ I got to thinkingā€”I thought I recalled you saying that your son mentioned there was still ā€œmore to comeā€ beyond the spinnerman addition, but (surprisingly) there wasnā€™t any significant change to the ending at Allentown or Indy. It made me wonder if they tried something out but it didnā€™t work as planned so they scrapped it. Any chance of getting an inside scoop? šŸ˜

Hey there folks. Does anyone know why its so hard to find recordings of 2017 shows? Is there a place we can purchase them? I fear that the official recording of my show is just going to be lost forever, which is really sad.

Which one are you looking for?

Congrats Mandarins on an absolute beast of a season.Ā  Fav show of the year for me!

And, on an odd note, I'm so happy also that Brandt Crocker finally pronounced the show better! When I went into Stanford, I was pretty much blind on what all the shows were. I seriously thought he said Cinnamon. Then I heard similar pronunciation in Prelims and Semis... like Sinnermun.Ā  Then I'd chuckle to myself because he would then pronounce the "Man" in "Mandarins" correctly.Ā  I'm sure it's probably just regional accents and stuff but I found it funny.Ā  Then in Finals, he said it correctly and it almost sounded like he had to catch himself from saying it incorrectly.

I'm fairly certain that somebody from Mandarins must've told Brandt how to properly say the title of the Mandarins' show (along with how to correctly pronounce one of the DM's names). For Finals, Brandt nailed the pronunciation for both.

I feel like that was their best run, saving the best for last. Super proud of them. Now it's in the hands of the judges, everybody is bringing their "A" Game tonight.

Completely agree. Whatever the judges decide, the corps can certainly say they did their best. So proud of them all!

This crowd is DEAD.Ā  Worst crowd I can remember at finals.Ā  People got jazzed up for Phantom just because it is Indy and they get the absolute same reaction every year regardless of the performance.Ā  Let's see what the second half will be like.

Are you basing that on Flo or are you there? The audience isn't very loud in the Flo mix, making it sound dead. I have no doubt they've been roaring all night.

Great build into the Home Sweet Home it by the brass. Also love that they form a home in the drill for that moment.

Solo rifle does a toss over the Colts home address sign to finish the opener.

I really love the use of trombones in Minuano, plus this is the best rendition of this song since it was first introduced by Crossmen in 1991. Great energy and tempo.

After a percussion feature, the trumpets show their skills while using mutes, adding some visual flare to the moment.

For what it's worth, Mandarins played Minuano in 1989 and 1990.Ā šŸ™‚

Iā€™m already salivating over the possibilities for 2024. With 2024 being the year of the dragon, what are the odds weā€™ll see the color guard perform a traditional dragon dance? I canā€™t wait.Ā

You can always go back to their 2007 show for that!

Yes, big congrats to JW... well deserved.

And a big congrats to the Mandarins for holding on strong to that 6th spot... one more to go.

I just KNOW tomorrow's performance is going to be something special. I'm just HOPING it'll be special enough to make up those few tenths differences to grab that 5th place spot. But if not, I at LEAST hope they can fend off Phantom one more time and hold on to that 6th spot!

Whew! You and @MBo1974Ā are both good folks. I would have hated having you at each others' throats.Ā

Challenging themes are good teaching tools with the right context. I love Mandarins show and part of its genius is being such a fun show while never making sinning look like a good choice.Ā

Anyone who wasn't at the movie theater last night missed Becca Anderson explaining the show. She made it very clear that the white vs red is not good vs evil--the white represents who society wants us to be and the red represents our authentic selves.

  11. If I had to guess, I think it would be a pretty split result. There's no doubt some kids will want to march with the corps they perceive as the most competitive--after all, this is ultimately a competition-based activity. But I think there are many who will want to march where they've found elements that really connected with them, e.g. show design, instructional staff, usual musical style, etc. Sometimes what they've heard about the member experience can be more important to them than competitive outcome.
