Really good-sized crowd. Nearly sold out (they sold end-zone standing room)!

Gold: Such an intriguing show (creeeeepy ending!) and I really like the layering they’ve got written into the brass book. Felt like there were a few minor ensemble tears, but a really fantastic performance and show.

BDB: First huge sound of the evening. They have all the components that make them so clearly the younger sibling of BDA. Brass sounded powerful with some great intonation. Percussion were aggressive. Guard were solid. Great show!

Golden Empire: Solid percussion and guard. For the size of the brassline, would love to hear more sound coming out of them. But a nice show from them!

Impulse: Yesterday’s guard scores really got my attention, so I watched their 7 amazing guard members most of the time and was blown away. Those are some talented guard kids and they’re doing some really great work really cleanly. The percussion is quite strong as well. Great way to kick off tonight’s show!

Much warmer than Stanford! About 92 degrees right now with a very light (read: ineffective) breeze. Beautiful facility but unfortunately not a very high seating area. Show starts in a little over an hour, heard three tubas are out for mandarins tonight. 🥺

It’s pretty rare for corps NOT to have built-in changes/enhancements to their show that they’ve carefully scheduled and planned out across the competitive season. It keeps the show fresh and exciting for fans, judges AND the marching members. I suspect we’ll get much more “oomph” from their ending before the season is done.

The stands are pretty low, unfortunately. When DCI shifted all the shows around due to the Rose Bowl scheduling snafu, I believe it caused Mandarins to lose the larger stadium they originally planned to use. Definitely get there as close to the 4:30 gate opening as you can to get your pick of seats.

Haha I’m pretty sure I know which one is your son. I think the Mandarins Contras IG did a meet-the-members post with him a little while ago. ☺️

The last World Class California competition tonight is also the Mandarins home show. It won’t be on Flo, but it’ll be my one and only chance to see these corps live this season. Looking forward to getting my face melted by the brass lines, as West Park HS has no track and the front of the pit goes right up to the stands.
