  1. I don't know any that ARE that! Do you? Is this an east coast thing like case-concentration?
  2. Just saw the CEO of in.live and he makes an impressive case for live music performance. Could this be serious competition for Flo? Or maybe used at the corps level to push content From the Lot, maybe?
  3. I found THIS article about one of my favorite corps and, specifically, their drum major and it prompted me to ask why members have to "negotiate" for their own experience? "With the green light, we got to work, crafting new structures and implementing changes. We secured an extra half hour for dinner and an extra hour of free time at the end of the day, each day. We secured more free days. We received time every day in the first week for cultural development. We completely revamped our tour job system by mixing the composition of teams. We made a website of every member’s picture and information and gave everyone access to learn about each other. We built a culture of inclusivity, wholesomeness, and care for each other."
  4. And rookies are encouraged to read for a while before posting. Most members here don't let B.S. hang around for long before calling it out. The trick is to be around long enough to know the B.S. from the meaningful posts, which comes with time.
  5. It was totally appropriate. There's laughing at a person's situation, and then there's laughing at the situation to ease the tension. Considering the extent to which these boards have hashed out the accusation list, a little levity is perfectly appropriate. Newer members are encouraged to read for several days or weeks to better understand the dynamic of the regular posters.
  6. I love this phrase. So descriptive of human nature where humor is salve that makes bad things more palatable so they can be dealt with more effectively than when one is angry.
  7. This one is a little sensitive... Tread lightly. Crass? Clearly you're a rookie to DCP.
  8. In the end, though, the lawyers will win. It's always the darn lawyers. Lawyers and HR people set the rules in the US, working or otherwise. If DCI plans for an optimistic opening and some school's lawyers say no... If the drum corps say "Let's go!" but DCI's lawyers say "Well..." If a band boosters wants desperately to build a show out of the 2020 ashes, but the lawyers say "Maybe next year..."
  9. Yes, of course. This is, by definition, acting from a position of positive conviction with preparation for the worst, not the other way around Because of the long lead time to create a DCI summer, that effort has to be first because pulling the plug takes only hours by comparison.
  10. If predicting the Covid were similar to predicting the weather, we'd have percent chances backed by scientific computer calculations with hundreds of years of historic data. What we got were "novel" opinions affecting the entire globe with no, zero, not a lick of the data the weathermen have at their disposal. History based on, literally, 100 years ago. Pfft. What, in God's name, made us think we could predict this event's either "best" or "worst" case? Drum corps should just motor ahead full speed until it's clear to stop.
  11. Because I'm answering your question first, then trying to pull the convo back to OT. Remember? You said I wasn't answering your questions. And when I do... Uggh. Move on.
  12. OK, Jim, here's your text. It was about numbers tangentially, but it was really a challenge to those who believe differently to put up a different viewpoint of how it was to be done. NOT "just numbers". "...I’m asking how do you think they should have picked a needed number of ventilators and other equipment. If you think they did it wrong let’s hear your thoughts." ...and I told you my thoughts.
  13. Drum Corps International has the opportunity to carpe diem the crap out this crisis, be the one that leads the way back and sets the example. Leadership and vigor and optimism and vision are cast in the teeth of the crisis, in people thrown into the fight to save the day. If the confluence of right events is unfolding, the right people in the right place at the right time might just be able to Make Drum Corps Great again. If they don't chicken out.
  14. Well, someone must have exercised some "expertise" in coming up with 40,000! Why does the opponent to such waste have to come up with a better plan than the one in place?? How about "BE MORE ACCURATE!"? That's my better way. But, again, it takes no effort at all to be pessimistic, especially when so many exhibit it. The fact is that something like 30,000 of those requested (and delivered) machines were not used, the demanded hospital ship was not used, the field hospitals set up by the military were not used. At what point in the complete butchering of the "professional estimates" does one start to say we need new estimators instead of demanding a better plan from those who are opposed to our waste and ineffectiveness? Can we PLEASE stay on subject? This rehashing of guilt is just so darn frustrating. I'm tired of guilt-shaming already. Can we PLEASE look forward to something positive in drum corps to talk about? Does EVERY conversation here have to end up being a political and personal blame game? Can we please talk about the F-ing drum corps activity instead of the freaking mayor of NY?
  15. No, I'm saying mention and plan for the best - even your notion of best - with as much vigor as planning for the worst. Just that and nothing more. Want an example? What is the ENDING time frame for the mask mandate where you live? A month? Six months? No one says. "Until we say so." By and large, the typical news cycle reporting would scare away any attempt to plan beyond this afternoon, so it would take someone with vision and guts and sensible planning to be best-positioned no matter what the eventual outcome of CV is or how it does or doesn't affect drum corps. I'm glad to know first hand that optimism is a considerable part of the current planning even as I'm concerned about rumors of divisions and "non-correlated risks" among corps. I think the fan base, and maybe DCP specifically, would do well to adopt a more optimistic tone that focuses less on death, shut-down, and demise even as they plan for other scenarios.
  16. ...because people are too stupid and must be led by the nose in order to do the right thing? I don't believe you're seeing it correctly - it was not said anywhere that things not being as bad as expected is a bad thing. Nobody said that I've read. This is that trap again. Up is not down, down is not up and nobody you know or I know considers death in any number acceptable (except war planners). What if Covid is gone by January and drum corps is caught flat-footed, can't react in time, and misses a great opportunity to gain relevance and, possibly, gravitas and exposure? Listening to the negative extremes even today would prevent many from coming out of their basements, when clearly things are improving now daily. In both extremes, damage occurs. We, of course, can't compare death with drum corps. Planning for the best, at some times against the common movement's direction, can allow DCI to take advantage of the best of circumstances even while the masses are pointing to the falling skies. Both are important even if death is more important. I don't know 75/25, somewhere in there? (I'm kidding!)
  17. Yes, and three tests, too. MUCH of the data is skewed to almost unusable.
  18. And that's my point. The expectation was crafted to induce fear, if even for a very viable reason. But few stopped to think about coming back from such predictions and the actions that they called for at the time (not necessarily here). This is late August. The "season" just ended. There's plenty of time to make optimistic plans and only the stroke of a pen or key is needed to change that. Again, it's the planning that DCI, at al, cannot afford to NOT do.
