  1. As far as what I consider to be "old school" drum corps, 1975 Madison's "MacArthur Park" is where its at.
  2. The show in Stillwater was certainly something. I don't ever remember experiencing that kind of tension anywhere.
  3. I was not a part of this band, but have heard about the tape... very tricky drill move, one person slipped and fell, and probably 10-12 others fell down over top of him... One judge said, in an extremely sarcastic tone, "oh i love the domino effect here, really connects with the music" or something along those lines.
  4. "Devil Went Down to Georgia" was a great Spirit of Atlanta chart back in the early 80s. 1980 and 1981, I think.
  5. Makes me miss the old Boys Club. BLOOO!
  6. I love Barber's Symphony No. 1... SCV did parts of it in 99. Excellent field show material.
  7. Actually, I attended a Philadelphia Orchestra concert last spring, the repetoire included "The Walk to the Paradise Garden" by Delius - which was, needless to say, gorgeous - followed by what I believe to be the first english horn concerto written. If there's one out there, it must be very much unknown, because the soloist (who commissioned the work along with the Philly Orchestra), spoke about the work for about 5 or 10 mins before it was performed and if I remember correctly, did indicate it was a first. It was, I have to say, in my opinion, horrendous. After intermission: Scheherazade. The brass section was truly mind-blowing int he quality of their playing. Why the bass trombone player wasn't recognized, I have no idea. The Philadelphia Orchestra is truly an amazing ensemble, surpassing the New York Phil, IMHO.
  8. Honestly, my own opinion here... the whole "feel good" atmosphere that some try to push on drum corps makes me sick. DCI wants to make this activity more and more like a sport all the time, and yet people still don't want to accept that its a competitive arena, where passionate fans and rivalries exist. Booing is going to happen. Get over it.

  10. Whatever year it was that Phantom's drumline had sticks that look like pencils... they should've scrapped that idea and made them look like asparagus instead.
  11. Kevin: [On who inspired him to be a wood worker] I'd have to say Jesus. He was a carpenter and I figured if you're going to follow in somebody's footsteps, why not the steps of our lord and savior? Jack: [before Greg has a chance to respond] Greg's Jewish. Kevin: Really? Well so was J.C...
  12. Movement I: "Chains of Reaction" Movement II: "Newton's Cradle"
  13. I know David Holsinger attended several camps and summer rehearsals when The Cadets played "To Tame the Perilous Skies" in 1992, and from what I've heard he really enjoyed it.
  14. Holy ####! Disagreement with juding in a subjective activity? Who'da thunk it?! I'll agree, I enjoyed PR's show more than Cavies, but there is a lot of subtlety and sophistication in Cavies show that goes unnoticed sometimes. "A very poor show in terms of audience appeal and pagentry." Hmm. Were you there to hear the audience reaction? Seemed pretty #### positive from where I was sitting.
  15. My Schilke 51D will always be my favorite... used it on tour, came home and put it in my trombone for concert and marching band.
  16. I love the ride cymbal part in the ballad!
  17. Cavaliers 1998? Don't get me wrong, I love the show... just doesn't strike me as Spirit of Disney material. But then again I didn't see any live shows in 1998... in fact the only two drum corps shows I really knew well at that point were 96 Phantom and 87 SCV.
  18. yeah... except for the people out of step in the closer... :P
