  1. $35 for Prelims + Alumni Show is a price-point I can live with ... looks like I might get to see a show this year after all ... :-)
  2. A Mid-summer's Dream in NJ ... shades of those HOT sticky days in August at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City ... now all we need is Ballentine to petition the town for a Beer Garden license for the day ... would definitely keep more in the stadium than in the parking lots! ... LOL ... Best wishes for a great day/evening of drum corps ... lots of memories through the years in Clifton Schools Stadium ... :-)
  3. ... and mine as well ... I used to be able to post photos, but somewhere along the line combos of versions of Internet Explorer, Window 7, Java, Adobe Flash and other various s/w got mismatched and took on a life of its own ... add to that multiple virus attacks, constant other "happenings" and life on computers becomes a drudgery ... I'm hoping Windows 10 resolves many of these issues - though I doubt it ... Keep the faith baby ... :-)
  4. Eastsiders ... like most little known "inner city" corps, an abundance of talent ... they, the Riversders, Carter Cadets and others gave the "guns" plenty to think about ... :-)
  5. Nope ... uniformed judging and increased prize money were the two main objectives of forming DCA ... the "rules" stuff you cited didn't come about until later in the game in the early 70's ... I'm not sure when DCA published their own sheets and first "Blue Book" ... but, in the beginning (64-71ish) they followed the AL sheets and participated in the Legion Rules Congress ... Later on, what you wrote is correct ... the Sr. corps wanted to break away from the rigidity of the AL rule (VFW never really came into play) ... And that's what I remember ... the first big change came in 68 with the 10/10/10 GE sheets (which Angelica pushed since 62) and the next was the introduction of the PA caption in drumming (thank you Eric) in 71 ... abandoning the Starting Line happened in 71 ... starting "on the field" occurred in 78 ... going over the "Finish Line" was ended circa 74/75 ... Of course, this is only from my meager memory banks ... after all ... I was in NY ... :-)
  6. Guess I don't understand what the original accusation was regarding inspections ... someone thought they were actually good? ... That's a first ... LOL ... I remember the days at some shows in the 60's where corps lined up in three's ... on the Inspection Line ... the Ready Line ... and finally the Starting Line ... each was about 5-7 yards from the other ... you can see the depth of the lineup of corps in many of the archived photos and videos that are online ... the last shows I remember being at as a spectator that employed this was the 69 WO in Lynn and the 69 VFW in Philly ... there's also some fokelore stories of Sr's mixing it up between the lines at various National competitions ... OH MY!!!! :-)
  7. The last Sr Circuit I remember having inspection was the Northeast Circuit ... circa mid-late 60's ... :-)
  8. Nope ... no inspections in DCA ... AL and VFW shows held onto them at the National and State level until their demise ... :-)
  9. Anything to help the cause ... I really wish we could get more Minicorps to perform at the BHOF I&E's ... BTW, Donny ... what ever happened to the Mini Corps Associates? ... kind of fell off the radar after the 1st Championship they had in 2008 at that great venue in Albany ... any plans to resurrect it? :-)
  10. DCA Minicorps rules link: http://dcacorps.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-Mini-Corps-Rules.pdf If this doesn't work for you go to the Championship link on www.dcacorps.org Cheers
  11. Pepe talks to Joe Genero and Hy Dreitzer about tunes: Pepe: Joe Joe: Hi Pep ... how's yer Mother ... been to the old neighborhood lately? Pepe: Yeah ... went down of Out Lady of Mount Carmel's festival ... man ... that Madonna statue is heavy now ... Hy: Gentlemen ... how are ya? Pepe: Hy, I need a number for da Hot Shots ... der a GNYC corps from Norwalk Hy: But, Norwalk is in CT ... Pepe: Point taken ... Joe, wadda ya got for me ... you live in CT now ... Joe: How about How The West Was Won? They used bullets and guns in that ... it could be a theme show ... Pepe: Jeez Joe ... ya just gave that to St. Raphael's and dey got Archangels ... Joe: Yeah, but they wear cowboy hats ... fits a theme ... Pepe: You wit da theme again ... gimme sumptin' I could work wit here ... practice is at six ... Hy: How about Summertime? Pepe: Hy, is der anyone you HAVEN'T given Summertime to? Hy: Fair enough ... how about Night on Bald Mountain? Pepe: Christ Hy ... you wanna kill deze kids? Sky even hadda drop dat one Joe: I got it!!!! ... Hello Dolly!!!! ... sure winner!!! I have at least six charts you can choose from ... Pepe: OK ... dat'll work ... ... Hy, anything you can contribute here? ... I gotta go run the 50/50 before practice or I don't get paid ... Hy: Yup ... Cool ... Pepe: Wadda ya mean cool? Ya didn't give me nuttin' ta work wit yet ... dat ain't cool ... Hy: No ... Cool ... from West Side Story ... Pepe: Deze are little kids from CT ... dey ain't no street gang ... Hy: Trust me ... Cool is cool ... Pepe: OK ... you guyz are da best ... ... and that's the way music was shared amongst like minds in the 60's ... right Frank? :-)
  12. Boston and Sky also had two other common songs played in the same year: 1965 Hava Nagila and Once Upon a Dream (from Manhattan Towers) :-)
  13. Best version I ever heard of HD was Vasella's concert in 1964 ... all 6 soloists took a turn playing the solo in sequence ... two of them, Dom (RIP) and John DiQuatro eventually played with Sky in 72 and 73 ... Great tune for Drum Corps ... :-)
  14. Dreitzer wrote the Aquarius chart for both the Skyliners and Skokie ... amazingly, the two numbers were distinctively different, tailored for the strength of each hornline ... the "siren" effect at the beginning of the Vanguard's version was stunning ... and the "power" of the final charge for NY was deafening - with only 39 horns that year! Maybe FTD can expound on Hy's writing technique here ... :-)
  15. Good one ... I just remembered that Sun and Sky both played Aquarius in 1969 ... the dawning of the G/F age in DCA ... :-)
  16. Thanks ... First half of concert in 61 was La Virgin de la Macarena (whew) ... Granada was played as an OTL in 62 and Out Of Concert in 63 ... Green Eyes - who could forget Skip Gallant doing the "Mashed Potatoes" ... LOL ... Experiment in Terror was just that - AWFUL SONG!!!! :-)
  17. So ... here's one I forgot about ... Hawthorne, Sky and Sun all played Late in the Evening in 1981 ... I didn't even know the Cabs played it ... and NY called Sun's version Early in the Morning ... LOL
  18. Elphie ... thanks for keeping me in line ... how could I forget Misty? ... but they also played part of Opus One either that year or in 1960 (though I think 1960 was Madam Butterfly) ... it always made me think of Garfield's Intermission Riff ... This IS good stuff ... :-)
  19. Had a long conversation with Genero in the early 90's ... we drove together to Butch Anderson's funeral in Albany and had about 3 hrs each way to reminisce ... I first met him when he moved to Bridgeport in the early 60's when he took over St. Raphael's horn line ... anyway, he shared with me that Something Big was the first tune that he penned for the Queensmen after he took over for Bill Hayes ... funny how two guys from St. Catherine's helped two Jr corps from CT hit the "big time" ... Genero with the Bucs and Sasso with the PAL ... who woulda thunk it! :-)
  20. Okay ... for your files then ... as well as I can remember for St. Raphael's 1961 rep: Something Big Pomp & Circumstance Hey Ma Ma Opus One War March Jamaica Beyond The Sea :-)
  21. Brian ... check this one out in your files ... I seem to recall that both Our Lady of Lourdes (not sure who taught them) and St. Raphael's (Fred Cartwright) played This Could Be The Start of Something Big in 1961 ... both were fierce competitors in the GNYC in the early 60's ... Genero penned a version of it for the Queensmen in 62 ... remember that tune Frank? This stuff is fun ... especially when you get into two corps that played a tune in the same year and regularly competed against each other ... :-)
  22. Here's an interesting one ... 1965 saw two Jr corps play "On The Mall" for their Color Pre: St. Lucy's (George Rodriguez) and St. Raphael's (Genero) ... how'd that happen? ... the number was introduced (I think) in the early 60's by The Interstatesmem - taught by Dom Delray ... speaking of Delray, he also had a version of Hava Nagila with the Marksmen in 1965 ... the same year as Sky ... Just thought of another - St. Joe's of Batavia (Corky Frabrizio) and Bpt. PAL (Sasso) both introduced Big Spender in 1967 ... Hmmm ... :-)
  23. So ... it's always been interesting to me how horn instructors "competed" with each other in the 60's by penning the same tune for their corps after "the other guy" wrote it for their corps ... Here's some examples of Genero vs. Dreitzer: Showtime on Broadway - Loretto (Genero) 1962 ; Skyliners (Hy) 1962 Trumpet Blues - St. Raphael's (Genero) 1967 ; Skyliners (Hy) 1958, 1967 I'll Walk With God - St. Catherine's Queensmen (Genero) ; Skyliners (Hy) 1962, 1963 Under The Double Eagle - Hurricanes (Genero) 1964, 1965 ; Skyliners (Hy) 1958 Rocky - Matadors (Genero) 1978 (maybe 77) ; Skyliners (Hy) 1977 Hava Nagila - Ballentine (Genero) 1964 ; Skyliners (Hy) 1965, 1966 Gershwin challenge: Rhapsody in Blue (Hurcs-Genero) 1969 ; Concerto In F - (Skyliners-Hy) 1969 Hmmm ... think they talked to each other about what they were writing at the winter meetings? LOL!!! List your favorite 60's "anything you can do I can do better" tunes! :-)
