No, and that's a good thing.  I don't believe their 501c3 status will be revoked, or even suspended by the state.  In terms of "dead" I was referring to this topic being beaten like a dead horse.  But it is the off-season and just my personal opinion.

Wonder what CA track record is for not renewing non-profit status. Was in two PA groups that lost theirs for a while. One missed filing the paperwork (IOW someone screwed up). The other because they no longer met the non-profit qualifications. No idea how much warning they received as the board hid what was going on.

Shooting the messenger happens a lot in drum corps.  Stuart Rice was sounding the alarm on you know who for twenty years and everybody said he was crazy.  Which he may have been but he was right about that.

Problem I had with Rices RAMD posts was it turned into “something happened somewhere, some time with somebody and someone (else) should do something about it”. IOW he knew or heard the details but didn’t go (or quit going) to the authorities. So one of us should report (with no information). Note: I missed early posts as was a later arrived to RAMD.

Kicker was a Reddit poster claiming RAMD posters had a conspiracy by not reporting. Tried to explain Rice gave us nothing reportable but gave up. That poster was later banned by Reddit…

Isn’t it a DCI rule that member Corps must be a tax-exempt nonprofit organization?

Not that DCI hasn’t bent the rules for SCV in the past (1989 cough cough wink wink nudge nudge)…

No idea on this rule… or any rule for that matter. Just a reminder that DCI can do what it wants… but if the state does anything that kills the bingo income 🥲

DCI Annual Meeting starts Thursday morning 01-04-24.  SCV presentation will be the most anticipated event ever. Let's see what they have to say to the DCI Board and to the membership.  All of the work Richard has done will get blown out of the water is my guess.

If CA doesn’t allow SCV to keep their non-profit status then SCV can’t operate bingo. And SCV management has claimed Bingo is a huge part of their income.

IOW DCI could bless everything SCV has said and done but… the corps could still have to close shop.

On the field, presenting their 2024 show ‘Springtime for Hitler’, Drum Corps International is proud to present Santa Clara Vanguard!

eta - Springtime for Hitler is a musical in The Producers.  It is supposed to be intentionally bad.  If I give more info it will be a spoiler.  Go watch the 1967 version (not the later remake).

I’m hearing first part of Mel Brooks (vocal) cameo. “Don’t be stupid, be a smartie”. Good advice with this cluster…

Lots of handwaving and pretending things don't exist because it tarnishes their image. At some point in the last 30 years, the idea of being SEEN as classy and above reproach became more important than actually being classy and morally upstanding.

but at some point the fantasy became more important than accountability.

The Penn State/Jerry Sandusky flashbacks are starting. 😫😫😫

Right. A junior-year intern could work out the software change. (And any platform worth something is going to make a transition from Quick Books as easy as possible.)

This is all so unnecessary and so sad.

Agreed. Worse comes to worse if the software is non-compatible then keep old records on QB and new records on new software. BUT…. crappy job of transitioning if (repeat if) the new SW was non-compatible with QB. Someone didn’t do their freaking job checking it out.
Sounds like the real excuse is “we don’t know how to use the new software “. 🤔

in 2005, Troopers did not send to DCI Hg., DCI's request for their taxes filed with the IRS for 3 years. DCI BOD voted to suspend the Corps for the 2006 season for that neglect by the Corps Director at the time to forward those documents to DCI Hg, as well as DCI's demand that Corps Director be replaced there by the Troopers BOD at the time as a mandated condition by DCI in order for the Troopers be considered for the return to the field of competition. ( Troopers subsequently complied with that DCI Hg demand, and was approved for the return to the field of competition for 2007 ) So DCI, at least in the past, has not relied on conversations alone between a member Corps and its DCI Hg.  to take action DCI deems necessary to take.  DCI has even suspended Corps memberships in the past with no known communication between itself and a Corps and/ or Corps Director it has heard complaints about.

But in the current situation with SCV, DCI Hg. seems satisfied at the moment with their reported on going discussions with DCI Hg. that the state tax fillings delinquency is on track to be settled in a manner that satisfies both the state of Calif,  and DCI itself.... and sufficient enough for SCV to hold auditions and prepare for the season of 2024.  What the future holds however is yet to be determined, and with who and what to believe  I suppose subject to current discussion and debate.

Ok I didn’t know (or forgot) what DCI requested from the Troopers.

Is DCI complicit in anything ?  I guess only time will tell . But DCI at the moment seems satisfied with SCV ‘s public pronouncements they are making there .

What else does DCI have to go on besides what SCV is saying? Only other info is the CA paperwork mess but if SCV says that’s being worked out then DCI is 🤷🏻

I suppose we all do. Those marcher applicants at recent SCV auditions were told by staff there that all systems are go and that the Corps will " definitely field " next summer.

SCV press releases also state that DCI Hq has been in frequent discussions with SCV and apparently DCI Hq seems satisfied with the info provided to them sufficient enough to not put them on probation nor has there been any public notice of current concern by DCI Hg.

What/who to believe ?  I don't pretend to know the answer to that. I guess only time will tell.

And nothing said about the mess with the CA paperwork. 🤔

My search for trauma dumping came up with basically “I had it worse than you so I don’t want to hear your complaints/comments” IOW shut up. Know people who do that and just want to respond that it ain’t a freaking contest (who had it worse)

I completely understand what you are saying.

When I entered the Army I went to basic training at the age of 39. It was a surreal experience in that I was surrounded by marching age young new soldiers eager for the guidance and approval of the high and mighty drill sergeants (who were only a few years older than them).

I was in a different mindset with 20 years in finance, an MBA/CFA, and all the life surrounding it. I was just there to check a box and carry on with getting officially trained as a soldier.

Anyway........... about the second week into basic training I realized.

    OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    MY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The kids surrounding me................... THOSE WERE MY DRUM CORPS YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That experience and revelation is perhaps one of the more rare experiences one gets to observe in life. Short of my coconsciousness being pulled out of my 39 year old body and put into my mind back in 1990 all I could do was technically be a peer of all the young solders and watch them get suckered into all the mind games the drill sergeants came at them with.

The lies are endless, if only to create an atmosphere of simulated stress.

    Example:

How is it the END OF THE WORLD, if one little piece of lint is on a uniform or a boot is not polished to mirror finish, but on the other end of the equation Drill Sergeants are perfectly OK with soldiers BARELY passing rifle qualification.

Shouldn't Drill Sergeants also lose their #### if a soldier misses ONE TARGET???????????

The kids were surrounded by dramatics and they got drank it all up.

I started with a “Senior” corps at 16 and being in a group aged teenage to 40 or so helped me in life. Staff couldn’t pull the dramatics without an older person calling them on it. Especially talking like being in the corps is the most important thing in your life. (But have seen posts from BITD Jr corps members who still talk like it. 🙄)

Worked IT for the Navy and the line when someone is panicking over a HUGE problem is: “are the ships sinking??? (No) We will get it fixed, just relax”.

IOW my BS detector and priority setting was fine tuned in Sr corps.

Edit: lol locked out but access to raw data. Yeah like that stops anyone with a bit of knowledge. 😆(My expertise was database)

I’m really convinced people just come here to complain because they don’t hear the answers they want to hear. No matter what SCV says or doesn’t say people start flinging #### lol over this forum because it’s not what they want to hear.

What I want to hear is that the state paperwork is complete, in order and approved. If not, bingo can be lost and corps will lose its financial base

The issue is Santa Clara Vanguard 2024 not the past.  If some posters on here stopped reading Redit and did some research on Russ Gavin, you would find that he.  1) Marched Drum Corps. 2) Was successful Music Educator at both the high school and university level. 3)  Took over the Stanford Band at a time when it was the laughingstock of the college marching band scene and close to being shut down permantly.     He faced membership health and safety issues within the band that were compounded by the fact that he was dealing with adults. He solved all the problems that came up and the Stanford Band is a respect member of the college marching community today. 4) Was a Corps Director for eight years and the corps made DCI finals seven of those eight years.  5)  Was the first corps director to have a Trans member in the corps. The policies and procedures that he implemented to protect that member on tour are still used by many corps today.  Protecting Gay, Lesbian and Trans members is an important part of drum corps and marching bands.

Let's give Russ a chance to solve the problems at SCV.

And all of that will be for nothing if the BoD doesn’t get its crap together and resolve the CA paperwork fiasco. If the state closes the Bingo operation that will be it for the funds needed to operate

    You sure showed him. 😜

When I competed in the late 70s had a guy who worked with the Baris who used psychology. He knew we were a bunch of “self starters” who did not respond to yelling or insults. It was “huh… thought you could do better than that…” 3 second pause (for the meaning to sink in 😡) “ok try it again”.

I mean, my guard mentor/teacher always said it was a fluke if you can't demonstrate a skill 3 times in a row, confidently. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Had a horn instructor who was on the sarcastic side (his corps nickname was Ogre). Horns would play something just right and he’d say with a sneer “once is luck”. 😈 We’d mutter “love ya too” and then play it right again to “spite” him. 😆

I was just trying to be fair to both sides, too. Oh well.

Thats the problem with people like us who have followed the activity closely for (mumble mumble) number of years. Have seen too much crap go down and too many corps fold. Plus being opened minded enough to know the members of today live in a different environment than we did. So they would want different than what we had.

And go back and read Jeff Ream's  posts. You will see deeply unhappy people that just want to make us all see how miserable they can be.

Getting ready for the close of the thread.

And knowing Jeff and his dad for decades, there is a huge difference between being miserable and stating facts no matter how bad they may be. SCV has dug themselves in a huge hole and parts of it are not getting better. I want corps to survive and IMO this is not the way to do it

TY.  I would have lost what little mind I have left trying to remember his name.

I finally remembered (I think) “Our Lady of the Single Valve (OLSV) Cadets”. So many corps of the era were called Cadets so why not Cadets. 😆

Wonder if Ace did the review of 1975 Dream show that said Roosevelt Stadium was “the land that time forgot”. Chief Judge Walt Kelly chases dinosaurs off the field with his starters pistol. A real tornado takes the Hurcs away, etc.

Sorry mods can’t make this on topic
