  1. Wish I would have thought to check this before I started the thread. Just looked and Mike hasn't accessed DCP since the 19th. Probably holidays cutting into things. Also letting you all know that there was a new Fanfare article posted yesterday (Friday). Realizing that Mike didn't post about it gave me the clue that he hasn't been on DCP lately.
  2. Problem is I've been reading some of the Fanfares without even looking at the banner at the top of the page. I've been hitting the links Mike posts and then just read the article without looking at the whole page. Knowing Mikes history of DC writing I assumed (yeah ###-u-me) that it was part of DCW. Should have posted "realize, as of 5 minutes ago"...... Just looking for clarification in case anyone else sends in something that doesn't fit the right criteria.
  3. I realize that Fanfare is posted on DCIs website but when Mike asks for articles he never says anything about this making a difference. But I think when Mike asks for articles it's always on the Junior Forum. I've been looking at past Fanfare articles and all are either entirely Junior based or the person was a member of a Junior corps.
  4. Think after someone tries the connecting flight bit between the airports they forget about it too. :P I just added my horror story in case MelloRick was thinking on his own about connecting. Weird thing was I was flying home from Iceland for a work trip. Half my trip was getting from Lefur(sp) Erickson Airport in Keflavic to Baltimore across the Atlantic. The other half was getting from Baltimore to Harrisburg. As we sat on the ground at BWI person behind me asked "How long does it take to get to Harrisburg?". My answer of "Could have driven there by now" really ticked everyone off.
  5. Probably quicker and cheaper to go to BWI and get a rental car than catching a connecting flight to Harrisburg. Just go the right way round the Baltimore beltway until you get to I-83 north which takes you to Harrisburg. My "record" for flying from BWI to MDT (Harrisburg/MiDdleTown) is 5 1/2 hours. That includes layover time, being stuck on the plane for maintainence problems and a 40 minute flight. <**> <**> <**> And BWI never called Harrisburg to tell them the filght was delayed. My wife was ready to check for news of a plane crash by the time I finally got home. <**> <**>
  6. WTF! I keep getting bad Gatewa errors trying to respond to Rick (and I mean Rick this time). "That was Jeff too" Yeah, I meant to type in Raudabaugh and STILL typed in Rick. Guess I was laughing too hard as I saw the act at the Mechanicsburg show after I left (80 or 81?) and was picturing it in my mind. Also laughing as it was the first time Rick Colletti saw it and his face turned as red as his hair. Back in the 70s my mom went with my sisters Scout troop on a bus trip. She walked in the bus and it was Mel driving. She asked Mel if this would be more quiet than driving a bunch of Westshoremen around and Mels eyebrows went up then he laughed. Little did Mel know that the mid 70s group WAS as quiet as a bunch of Brownies compared to later years. ^0^
  7. Rhode Island Red would be my second choice, but gotta go with home town gang and what's in my signature.....
  8. D'oh bad me that was Mr. "Tribute to the Bridgemen with Knife and (ahem) Weiner" Rick... OK, which bus driver "accidently" dumped the "blue water" from the bus craper leaving a show? And after having an argument with a cop? approx 1980/1981 Either Scranton show 1979 or Reading clap show 1984 (dang the years run together). Trying to leave the parking lot before the show was over (forget why) and buses couldn't make corners due to parked cars. Bunch of corps members ran out to pick up the back end of a couple of cars and slide 'em over to make room. Would have loved to seen the owners faces when they came out. "Why the #### is my car at an angle??"
  9. 1975 Madison - Dueling Banjos anyone????? 1974 Troopers - Tubular Bells as a backup Bad technique or not, no problems hearing the bells....
  10. :P Oh yeah.. :P Where's Rick at??? And Mel (CB handle Silver Pheasant) RIP Somewhere in NY (Rochester/Corning/????) 1979. Howes got lead bus, it's about 6AM Saturday morning and we're heading to a downtown McDs for breakfast. Whole bus is half asleep until Howie yells "Holy #### I'm on the wrong side of the road!!". Somehow Howie misread a real disaster zone of an intersection while turning and ended up on the wrong side of the median. And there was no ####### opening to get on the only side. To make it worse Bus 2 and 3 follow Howie and all three buses are rolling the wrong way. Next thing Howie yells "Hang on guys" to either us or on the CB and flippin' floors that Wolfe mobile. Do the show and we kid Howie about going back to that McDs for midnight snack.... You guessed it, Howie makes the turn and yells "#### I did it again!!". Hang on for dear life again as Howie puts the pedal to the medal. :sshh:
  11. Check out 1974-1976 Yankee Rebels Senior corps. Snare line had cowbells attached to the front of the drums. Some great John Flowers arrangements/drum solos and one of the most original cadence ever. And the cadence had a LOT of cowbell.... Wish I had a recording of the cadence :( Edit: And oh yeah, marching bells and tympani
  12. Much more sense..... thanks...... Will have to check my DCA DVDs now that I know more.... Edit: Still trying to get used to seeing "Lake" in front of "Shoremen". :P
  13. Do you show all the signature stuff at the bottom? I have 275 also. And I think this (apology for offending) is the first one in 2700+ posts.
  14. Park City Pride was there last year and I mugged up where in Harrisburg I saw the Rebs. Turned out I saw Yankee-Rebels Alumni at the DCA show held at Central Dauphin High School (eastern Harrisburg 'burbs) not at the Forum (downtown). Heavens knows I spent enough time at both places.
  15. Hey I play like Maynards twin brother..... That is if Maynard had a tone deaf twin brother.... ^0^ :P Edit: #### just noticed this thread has over 1100 views already. Another example of growing interest for the Mini corps world?
  16. Hey I rode on the drum equipment truck for 5 years. I only complained when they didn't help put their crap... err, instruments away. ^0^ :P 'cause whatever they left on the ground I had to help stack in..... :sshh: So what I'm reading is corps have the same size/type of "bells" play different parts to get more complex music??? Bueller?? Historic note which is ironic today: One of the original reasons for grounding tympani in the pit was to free up three bodies to play in the rest of the drum line. IOW - went from four people playing one tymp each to one playing all four.
  17. About half the show is "regulars" with the rest on a 2 year or so basis. But I was out of the SIB loop for about a decade. Regulars - Y-Rs Alumni(?), Buccs Alumni (since late 80s or so), Westshoremen Alumni (since the corps was formed about 5 years ago), Naval Academy (since my time in late 70s with possible breaks) and Hip Pickles for the last few years. Think Cabs Alumni have done at least 2004-2006 which breaks the 2 year bit.
  18. Heh, didn't take long for someone to figure that one out and throw it back at me. :P Let me rephrase the question because I was being serious. Of the corps carrying 8 or more "bells" are the "bells" all different sizes? If some are the same then do the players play the same notes or different ones? Asking because I have no idea and no one to ask. I'll wait for more info before I go further. Biggest problem I have with bigger pits is the expense of the equipment. And speaking from a horn players stand point IMO (repeat IMO) going from 4 to 8 bells doesn't add that much to the show except more volume. PS - More horn players means more you can do with the drill. At least that's what a drill writer/instructor told me one time.
  19. Check out some shows when there were a lot less bells. Or better yet listen to some pre-pit years when the most any corps marched was four. If you get too used to that, then the sound generated today would seem too much. s/ Guy who marched two years without any bells. Edit: Better yet, what is the purpose of the large number used today?
  20. And think they merged with Guelph Royalaires in 79 (78?) to become Northstar/Royalaires. Guessing a one year merger when both corps were going thru a tough time. Maybe... Possible... *shrug*
  21. Invite only from the sponsors Five Star Brass...... But part invited and part "first come - first served" would be interesting. :) s/ guy who counting on his fingers and toes how many times he's been at (or in) SIB.
  22. And doing all that work wearing shakos with plumes yet..... Plus the heavy jackets and skirts..... Yeah, we remember those days don't we? :P
  23. <looking down, shoulders hunched up and front part of foot digging a hole in the ground> Yes, Uncle Larry...... Hey, he is one of the few people who can get away with called me Jimmy..... And the rest of them are either elderly ladies...... or people in corps...
  24. Always have a Monty Python moment when a small corps comes out. "And now for something completely different". Then I enjoy the Red Carpet Association flashback (late 60s/70s small Sr corps circuit). :) Seriously I've found if people don't try to compare small corps shows with the larger corps they enjoy the smaller corps better. IOW don't sit there and say "... but they don't use the whole field..." just judge the show on it's own.
  25. Anyone still wondering why Hershman went to the Junior corps world? ^0^
