Here is a clip from part of Phantom's show from '75. I wish I had the whole show.
From those who may not know, when the corps lifts both legs it is called "marking time." It was mandatory back then.
Note the weight of the rifles. They were very heavy back then. Don't confront the guard with silly comments - those rifles built very big arm muscles. They would make quick duty of you for saying so.
If you have the opportunity, listen to Phantom from ''74 to '77 to hear an incredible progression of brass composition and technique. The difference between the first and last years in that spread is outstanding.
Those uniforms made the corps. It was shakos before that year. How many remember Phantom in shakos?
8 contras!!! Huge line for back then 😉
Also love in the older videos how you can hear the "thwack thwack" from the rifle slings... 🙂

Don't forget, the saying "May you live in interesting times" is a Chinese curse, not a desired outcome.
"Interesting" is possibly the safest word to use when describing your feelings/thoughts about something. Said correctly, it can (safely) cover a broad range of actual feelings/thoughts w/o actually showing those feelings/thoughts...

You’re right! That subdividing so we wouldn’t start a move until the final 1/8 note is what made our marching look so crisp.
Parking lot near Revere Beach for rehearsals....

I remember walking from the Zingali house on Floyd Street to a subway stop not too far away, but en route we crossed St. Anthony’s parking lot. I recall, clear as day, seeing spray-painted in red on the asphalt, the words, “Zing Step.” The Zing step is what George taught the Lancers as the proper way to march, with an exaggerated heal-toe roll. So he probably had connections with St. Anthony’s band.

And now PC gets some Courtney love!
I usually only get to one show/year (Massillon) so don't get to see many corps live, but MAN that was a GREAT show!!!

Here's another early season version, this time with the guard's "costume change":

Mmmmm, grits (syrup and butter, or shrimp, or...)
Mmmmm, hash browns (just about any configuration)

@ironlips my father marched with St. Vincent's from '53 through '56 (baritone) AND went to Xavier High School (graduated in '56)! Small world.
I found a YT recording from '55 about a week ago and sent it to him - my mom sent me a short video of him listening to it and singing along. 😁
He's almost positive he's the person in the pic under the arrow:

And I marched '75 - '80, '82 and also fenced in college (went to an open practice, coach saw I was 6'-2" and left-handed and said "we're going to have some fun with you"...) and the rest is, well, you know...

fast forward a few weeks and DCI East prelims...no finals since a huge storm blew through after prelims and made finals a standstill. but both times we witnessed a legend...the 1986 Blue Devils. Channel One...Spanish Fantasy.....OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i still ( well pre wrist break) can't get that backsticking right. that brass line. North Drums.it had everything. Star with the cool space show, cadets improving but still way out of 1st.27 fighting for what became their last stand. Boston well above Colts and Crossmen.
*respectfully snipped*
My Dad and I were at DCI East that year (summer between undergrad and grad) and remember that storm and the standstill. One thing that will always stand out to me was Boston's performance, especially at the end with the DM essentially running up and down in front of the corps getting them revved up as they headed into the bugle call for "Conquest". Being an East show, you KNOW the crowd ate it up. And yes, BD was that good that year.

Not an easy piece to play. We had tears all the time in the beginning of the season until we got our act together.
LOVED this show! '74 was my first year going to Championships (11 at the time). Finals night in particular was amazing! The last 6 corps had the place JUMPING!

Yes, it was at Parma. SCV lit that place on fire that night. The 1988 Phantom of the Opera show was such a breath-taking show. I loved when SCV did their Russian shows in 86 and 87, but 1988 was even more theatrical. It loosely walks you through the story without trying to literally tell the story, and the sound of their brass line on the final push (what I used to refer to as a lush winter-green organ sound) put chills through my body.
We (me, my fiancee, and my parents) were at that show as well (the field in Parma, facing directly west...in the evening...)
I distinctly remember after SCV finishing (I found where they had been practicing and saw bits and pieces) my parents turning to look at me, just speechless. It really was that amazing.

Never did a deli opening. Did a re-opening of a lumber yard. Later became the 2nd Ollie’s Discount store which is now in multiple states. 😳
One year we carried flags from a local radio station in a parade instead of our own for a small donation...

Great shows without titles:
Santa Clara 1974Madison Scouts 1975
Blue Devils 1976
That was almost my 70s consecutive list: 74 Kingsmen, 75 SCV, 76 BD.
Excellent choices.

I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice?
That's good though, I wish people were the same here in the States. I have half a mind to go to the grocery store in a dinosaur suit with a long tail to slap people with if they get too close to me
I was suddenly reminded of this gem from "The Far Side":

Does anyone have a vid of Madison Scouts 202? I would Love to see that. I am guessing it’s a lot of those ram’s horn things and kettle drums. And sandals. But the guard work I bet was way ahead of its time.
Probably all-male, too

Though I’m not a FaceBook user, I think that’s a very clever response to a difficult situation. Kudos To the PR communications staff.
It was a lot of fun! Lots of people throughout the day, and good discussion in the comments about shows, insider tidbits, etc.
Plus I got to see ALL of my favorites (although I somehow missed '82 and I knew it was coming)...
They had 5 minute breaks in between each video; at one point, someone commented they needed that time for the corps to move equipment on and off the field...😁
