U.S. Open Brass Band Championships
MikeN replied to Michael Boo's topic in DCI (All) Corps Show & Event Reviews
Thanks for posting the great review! Mike -
Revolution's strength is their drumline - if you can make that long of a drive, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised... Mike

Very very top - s/b a black bar with it next to Drum Corps Planet? Also, here's the direct link for now: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.org/percussionplanet/ Mike

Any drummers or would-be drummers: If you have suggestions / questions / comments of things you'd like to see on the site or specific forums you'd talk in, please PM me! Thanks, :) Mike

Thanks for the links! Very helpful... There's a clinic in KC that our drum teacher's trying to get us all to go to - I think Kilpatrick's going to be there (at least, he was last year). Mike

We got the drum guy at the "big" pipe band in Austin to come work with us last night. First thing he did was let me play one note and told me my grip was bad. :P It's okay, I knew it was coming - I pretty much had to teach myself traditional grip, but what he changed it to was weird. For left hand, I don't know how different "regular" trad grip is, he's got my palm perpendicular to the plane of the drum, and almost all of the stick action is controlled by the thumb on top. For my right hand, I was a little more confident, since I was used to playing matched, but he changed that, too. Now, it's more of a french grip - more finger than wrist... heck, really, it's like a timpani grip. Again, thumb on top. (Basically, rotate your wrist 90 degrees clockwise from the palm-down thing most schools teach.) It's taking some getting used to, but I can live with it, I suppose. Pipe band drumming - much more different and distinct from "regular" marching drumming than I ever thought it'd be. Mike

DCP's 2003 Drum Corps Review Contest!
MikeN replied to a topic in DCI (All) Corps Show & Event Reviews
Bad news, everyone - Due to ... well, there's no other way to put it... complete lack of interest from our members, we have decided to cancel this year's DCP Drum Corps Review Contest. We did not have enough nominations to complete a full ballot. Thanks to those who did nominate reviews, and hopefully we'll try again next year. Please PM me or George if you have any questions. Thanks, Mike -
It is back up, and they've apparently got a deal with Vic Firth to share footage... http://www.drumlineparkinglot.net/ Mike

Who makes the most back friendly snare harness
MikeN replied to kiltiesdrumguy's topic in Percussion Planet
So what are some good "big person" snare carriers? Our pipe band ain't full of youngsters, and our T-bars are hurting in a big way... Mike -
DCP's 2003 Drum Corps Review Contest!
MikeN replied to a topic in DCI (All) Corps Show & Event Reviews
Last chance to nominate reviews! The deadline for submission is tomorrow (Tuesday) at midnight... Send an e-mail to contest@drumcorpsplanet.com with the URL of your favorite / best review! The most nominated reviews will be posted on Wednesday for voting. Good Luck! Mike -
Oh, shoot - that was in the Historical Series booklet back when... Um... 88?
-
Actually, they were right in line with everyone else. They had 8 when I saw them in July, and I think it was down to 7 by Finals, but that's still not an outrageously small number. It's not <cough - Star '90 - cough> like they were marching 5... :)

DCP's 2003 Drum Corps Review Contest!
MikeN replied to a topic in DCI (All) Corps Show & Event Reviews
Okay, here's the details on nominating reviews: You can start nominating reviews on Monday, October 13th. To nominate a review, send an e-mail to: contest@drumcorpsplanet.com In the e-mail, please try to remember to include the URL of the page with the review (just copy the address in your browser window), or at least try to give me enough information on it so that I know which review you're talking about! :) Reviews need to have been posted or e-mailed to us within five days of the contest date in order to qualify. All show or camp reviews posted between March 1st and Sept 5th 2003 will be considered. Nominations will close on Tuesday, October 21. On Wednesday, October 22, a poll will go up that includes the top 10 nominated reviews, and links to them so you can read them in all of their glory. Once you've read them, use the poll to vote for the one you think's the best. Voting will close on Friday, October 31st at the end of the day. (midnight) On Monday, November 3rd, the winning entry will be announced. So start persuing the Show and Event Reviews forum, and determine which reviews you want to nominate. And yes - you can nominate yourself! :) If you have any questions, you can e-mail me or just hit the PM button under this post! Thanks, and good luck! Mike -
What types of music do rudimental drummers like?
MikeN replied to FlamDragHero's topic in Percussion Planet
Heh. I'm in a pipe band, and at the end of rehearsals, I've had about as much bagpipe as I can take for the week... :) -

Besides drum corps / marching band? I've got a hangup on singers with "little waif" voices. Sixpence, et cetera. Don't ask me why... I'm also a huge classical music fan. And a soundtrack fan, as well (which often goes hand-in-hand with classical, really.) Mike -
Moved to International Corps Forum. Mike

Ah - my bad. Thanks for the correction! Mike

This has come up on the Cavies forum before. They were custom made (at least, those particular ones) and had to have attachments drilled into the drums. I know there are other ways of doing it - heck, I saw them in my town over 15 years ago on snares, but the Cavies ones were detachable - that's the difference. Mike

Okay, here's the list from August 2002 (only goes through '01): Division II / A Finals Winners Division III / A-60 / All-Girl Finals Winners Division II / A Prelims Winners Division III / A-60 / All-Girl Prelims Winners Division I / Open Quarters Winners Division I / Open Semis / Prelims Winners Mike

Do a search here on DCP for "Division Champions" - I've posted last spring who won each contest for all years during finals week (A-60/A/Div II / III et cetera). Also, in our Orlando coverage news, I posted the same thing this past month. If all else fails, I can send you a link to the list. :) Mike

DCI's Multi-Championship Corps
MikeN replied to MikeN's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
Yep, that's an all-divisions list. :) That's why there's names we don't automatically think of. (I mean, who off the top of their head puts the Mandarins and the Cadets at the same #?) Mike -
Hey, all... If anyone has recordings from the old BD/SCV Pavilion concerts that they're looking to get rid of, please let me know - I'd love to take them off your hands. :) Thanks to a kind soul from years ago, I do have the 1992-1994 recordings, and I love them. Thus, I'm looking for more! Any help would be appreciated... Thanks! Mike New
