  1. I have no facts and figures to answer those specific corps,,but I have to assume that the active corps certainly picked up a member or two from the folding corp. My corp always benifted (somewhat sadly) from a smaller competitore going under, so I would have to think its the same all over
  2. Right Jerry,,but not always with good results huh?
  3. World Open and US Open were neck in neck for me. US Open Crowds were always awesome, always loud. World Open (Manning Bowl) was an incredible experience. The Best corps WERE there and they usually put on the show of their lives there. I really don't own a recording from the Manning Bowl that wasn't fantastic, and again, the crowds there really REALLY knew there drum corps.
  4. That is the Sky Ryders, you are correct. They were playing a Larry Kirsher arragemnet of "Somewhere over the Rainbow"

  6. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/44/109936845_13f1231f4a.jpg Found one CRISP,,but you can thank NanciD
  7. The Squires are in a picture in this series and they look simular,,but this is the Saginaires. The stripes are different from the stripes on the Squires Tunic
  8. it might be the Saginaires I think the other corp in Blue was Les Eclipse
  9. I remembber your preformance in Ithaca that day. To this day, it is still one of my favorite shows
  10. 77 Avant Garde weren't tied with the Glassmen at A.I Kieth. Perhaps at the 83 A.I.
  11. The dis-colorization of the picture does not eliminate the white Cumberbund on those uniforms. I'm sure you are right. Besides the SenecaOptimists and later the Avant Garde, did anyone else march with that Bright Yellow?
  12. Yes you are so right Lancerlegend. 27 was awesome at that show as well as so many others that year. In Fact going back to 69 W.O. I liked them there as well. They Played Classical Gas =) Amazing for a hornline
  13. I see that this picture was credited for being taken in 1975,, so I am confused. In the background behind the DM's I see the Seneca Optimist Bright Yellow Uni,, but they didn't make an appearance until 76. So is this someone else?
  14. I have a lot of great recordings through the years but I have to say the one that always stands out for me was the 1969 World Open. There so many great corps there. I have no favorite corps (well,,,maybe the Troopers have a slight edge) but just loved that show. Tell me,,do you have a favorite show recording? If so,,any favorites corps from that recording??
  15. Thanks Mike,,and if we were talking about HS this would be of great relief We all know that circuts don't just spring up. There has to be a lot of work and a shared belief that it can be done,,like ALL ideas. I imagine that even the initial thought of the DCI concept was met with as many Nay-sayers and doubters, as,,,this idea. However ideas evolve from negative feedback as well as positive,,,so,,,ya just never now. When I was in drum corp,,never in a million years could you convince any of us,,that soon all drum corps would be bands and play band instuments and use electronic equipment. We gagged at the thought,,,and yet,,here we are
  16. Sadly, I know your right. The corp director and staff these days of such corps are under a tremendous amount of preasure to tour or else they run the risk of losing many key players. They are so to speak, between a rock and a hard place. Drum corps is so expensive that these kids figure,,"if I'm going to spend that much money,,I'd better have a shot at somthing big". There are no insentives, and loyalty,,well,, that disappeared when everyone started to jump from corp to corp in search of "The Prize"
  17. Big Bad Bari,, It's all good,,and everyone has a right to state their opinion. I was just taken back a bit at the tone , when up to that point I hadn't noticed much "zeal" shall we say, in the opinions LOL. I am not here trying to condem DCI, but they have made some serious mistakes under the guise of "The Good of Drum corp" when it really came down to the Good of the Few that could afford what they thought was fair. The prize (DCI membership) was so attractive, that many corps went broke, trying to measure up,,,trying to be somthing that they were not possibly ready for. Those corps had it good in their little (and sometimes big) Circuts. They would travel to these shows, that sometimes even provided parade money which helped in the cost of travel. I can't speak for all corps,,but I can tell you that I belonged to a circut that had well over thirty corps that was in 73 through 75,,DCI was still in it's infancy. As the years went one and DCI started to mandate what member corps could and couldn't do,,these circuts started to dry up. This is somthing that I do not have "Sound Facts" on. Sorry, it was somthing that I experienced and witnessed. It was harsher here in the east simply because there were so many corps here. I lived in a town that had 7 drum corps in it in the late 60's and early 70s. I use to think that was unique until I started competing outside of that little world. This is of course "closing the barn doors after the horses got out", as they say. And whats past will probably never come back, given the economy. DCI will never release that strangle hold they have on the big Piece of the pie that brings the money into them and rightly so. (who in their right mind would let the golden goose go) But perhaps if they stoped mandating the expensive tours and encourged the smaller corps to compete within areas that they couls afford to travel to, fewer corps would fade away because of money issues, which in my opinon is the real cause of the feeble amount of good competetive corps. The Talent these days IS superior thats true, but the status of being one of the best in the world really means nothing (in my opinion) if you achieve it year after year with fewer & fewer quality corps competeing for it. PS. Gil,, you're spot on IMO
  18. Didn't the Argone Rebels play a series of songs from Jesus Christ Superstar in 71? That would be considered a theme as well, yes?
  19. Here here!! This is very true. so,,as I said, I have been out of it for awhile. Are you saying that there is now some type of grace/forgiveness, should a member corp develop finacial difficulties? With no,,,UMmm aftershocks to said corps? Just as a side note. Avant Garde still could not afford to travel to DCI in 77, but had a very solid season at many fine shows. After that 76 season, we were one practice from folding. We were lucky that we had Jeff Perkins at the Helm.
  20. You have all missed my original point, Not once did I say should DCI sanction smaller circuts or Divisions. I merely said wouldn't DCI benifit from NON DCI Circuts promoting those so called 15 man hornline type corps shows, so that there were someplace for the smaller,,$$ Challanged corps to compete. LOL I was NOT saying that DCI had it all wrong or anything other then could they benifit LOL. I will say this,,if the current system doesn't do something soon,,,sooner or later someones going to realize that "The Emperor" doesn't have any clothes on LOL. Being in the top twelve doesn't mean as much, if there are only twelve of ya to start. To Big Bad Bari and all those that are looking for "Sound Facts" well I have none, because I didn't think the question required research. However, I do know that Alumni corps ARE springing up all over the place, and without the finacial preasures that Mandated touring presents to corps, these alumni units seem to be thriving. Based on this and this alone, my question came about. It truely was no "Dig" to DCI, OR those associated. I realize all of what you are saying against,, is absolutly true,, so there realy is no need to be sarcastic in any way. I just asked if any one thought it would be a benifit. There was no sarcasim in my question and in no way was I downing DCI, therefore, I was under the impression that I would get some mature thought out replies. Well,, they were thought out =) As I said,, I was keeping in the theme of Historical and really was bring up old times and the haydays of D&B As for Jeff Perkins and his decision, He left it up to us. He presented it honestly to us. It was put this way. We could either tour the following year as a DCI member, where and when they told us, or take our chances the following year. He told us the finacial situation that we were in after our first year, and that we may not survive a tour with long travel possibilities. True, no one twisted our arms, still we made the decision in order to survive, as many others did in those years. We were buried that year st DCI. Lesson learned I guess. Peace Out y'all
  21. Well,, we of delusional thinking just never stop thinking of ways to irratate the "Keepers" of DCI's spotless virtues I guess. I was not trying to offer any "cure all" just one of many ideas or solutions to help increase the activity LOL. Big Bad Bari,, stop taking things, and yourself so seriously. I was merely saying that it might help. You make some great points but you say them so nasty,,that its hard to take it as anything more then bitter, that some old fart out here (me) had the gaul to suggest something. Sorry, But Elitist is the very word that comes to mind. "Live in the now" Isn't this a historical thread? It means nothing to me really,,,drum corp means nothing to me,,, not the way it use to and at least not enough to get in someones face about it. I pop onto DCP every 6 months or so, and it never fails to blow me away, that there is always someone out there waiting to be nasty, just because someone was talking old times and THOUGHT it might be a way to increase from 23 corps to maybe a few more. This thread said historical,, therefore, I was really talking old times with people that could appreciate it. Kieth and Howdy, you guys are cool and you get where I was going so I thank you. And Kieth,,I remember being made by DCI to tour all season long against the likes of the Bridgemen and Spirit, during their haydays and trust me,, we knew we would be clobbered too,,but,,we didn't care. we just loved being in shows with corps of all sizes. It was the time of my life. We didn't have to win,,,just be there. Sorry for those who have Axes to grind,, drum and bugle corps people back in the day,,use to be cool to one another. What happened? By the way,,senior corps shows bring in fans,,LOTS of them,,and they spend money,,lots of it,, so lets not pick on seniors at shows. Smile,,its suppose to be a fun activity
  22. The Bethesda Emerald Knights in 1974 played Halo of Flies by Alice Cooper. Not sure if that was the first "Rock Song" But, it also took up half the show time, which almost qualifys as a theme
  23. Laurie Sloan of the Guardsmen was the first that I ever saw in the finals, and she was terrific (1976)
