  1. Oh, OK. Good. If the corps is using consistant intervals throughout the ensemble, does the contracting look odd when it only takes place in a small part of the corps? Also, how would one do a block rotation without it contracting?
  2. I'm not suggesting that you don't know, just that the info you are giving isn't what I'm looking for. Don't get your little plastic gears all knotted up. I'm just trying to figure it all out.
  3. Perhaps I should just track down Mr. Gaines and ask him. I know Mr. Fiedler posts on here some. I'd love to hear about it from him.
  4. That doesn't really help me out. How is it written to avoid that? I'm looking for some concrete insight into the dot only system.
  5. The best part is some people don't understand why some people don't like the Cavaliers! If a line is at an angle and it is going to a front, if you take a straight line path to that spot, the spacing will close a little and then open up again at the end. I'm sorry Mr. Cavalier if you don't understand that. Have you ever used a protractor or compass? The point is clearly demonstrated. In order to avoid this, many corps use a curved path. Apparently the Cavaliers do not use curved paths, so my question is how do they avoid this effect? In theory, you could make several low count moves, but that seems rather inefficient. I use dots when cleaning drill, and I'm interested in the full dot only system that Cavaliers use, because visually they are quite stunning, however, I can't seem to get a Cavalier to explain it. They all seem to want to "LOL" for no apparent reason.
  6. Alright then, enlighten us. I just don't see how you can take a straight line to each form without having an accordion effect on spacing. How does that work?
  7. Very interesting. I applaud the Cavaliers for choosing Billy Joel and I actually am looking foward to seeing this. I've been a pretty vocal critic of the original music shows musically speaking, so it is nice to see them play good music.
  8. I'm not anti-fun by any means. I predict Oprah will be our next president. Why? Well, I have no real reason to make this prediction, but it sure is fun...
  9. There is no point in predicting anything about any corps at this point in the year, Regiment or any other. Most of the shows have not been announced, most corps have had only one camp. You might as well be randomly pulling these things out of a hat. For example, these predictions were made last January by folks on this board for 2006. 1st. the cadets 2nd. Phantom Regiment 3rd. Cavaliers 4th. Bluecoats there time is comming 5th. Madison Scouts 6th. SCV they will improve 7th. Carolina Crown 8th. Blue Devils another jazz show.... 9th. Boston Crusaders 10th. Blue Knights 11th Glassmen 12. Crossmen it will be close like this year 1) BD (surprised, I know) 2) SCV (west coast on top!) 3) Madison 4) Cavs/Cadets 5) Cavs/Cadets (im indifferent on this) 6) PR 7) Glassmen 8) Spirit 9) Boston 10) Crossmen 11) Crown 12) Bluecoats 1. BD 2. PR 3. Cavies 4. Cadets 5. SCV 6. Madison 7. Crown 8. Bluecoats 9. Blue Knights 10. Boston 11. Glassmen 12. Crossmen 1. BD 2. Cadets 3. Bluecoats 4. Cavaliers 5. Madison Scouts 6. SCV 7. Carolina Crown 8. Phantom Regiment 9. BAC 10. BK 11. Spirit 12. Colts Random and inaccurate. Nobody picked Cavaliers to win, some had Regiment at 8 and Bluecoats at 12. There is no way to accurately predict how the 2007 season will go at this point, therefore, any and all predictions are worthless.
  10. How is Regiment's book "iffy at best?" You don't know anything about any of these corps for the upcoming season. This post is worthless, at best.
  11. We rehearsed Rite of Spring at the first camp in 94 and were told we were doing Firebird as well, and wound up changing. You never know.
  12. It is considerably more mechanical than playing in a big band. I don't buy into it being "bad" for anybody though. I came back from corps with chops of steel and my professors were pretty impressed witht the breath support and flexibility I had developed over the summer.
  13. I think the issue here is "agreeable" as well. 12 tone compositions have melodies, but they are not "melodic" generally. There are good melodies and bad melodies.
  14. I had no idea what to be prepared for when I auditioned for Regiment. I had never auditioned for a corps before. I took my tuba and an etude I'd been working on in lessons. I did no physical conditioning.
  15. It isn't the G bugles that is holding back Pioneer. It's their execution. That sounds harsh, I realize and I know the kids in Pioneer are working their butts off, but I wonder if they are getting quality teaching.
  16. I'm a big fan of the three part chord in 96 Regiment where it was layered with the three drill sections coming together.
  17. I've become quite a big defender of marching bands on this board but also have a preference for Drum Corps. If I were given the choice of being in one or the other, I'd take a corps. One of the problems on this board is the people that feel the need to build up corps by bashing marching band. This is unnecessary as it makes it look like corps can't stand on it's own virtues and also attacks the largest recruiting base for corps.
  18. Best show of the year? I saw a lot of shows in 94 and I seem to remember one some guys in blue played that year. It included red satin bra's and was one of the best shows of all time.
  19. There's the old arrogance! 90% of DCI corp members are "bandos."
  20. Does the fan base change the activity? Most people at a high school football game are parents, but football is football.
  21. Still waiting for a compelling argument against Drum Corps being Marching Band.
  22. Right, but it is still football. Performing at a higher level doesn't change the nature of the activity. On average, drum corps perform at a higher level than marching bands. But they are still doing the exact same activity.
