  1. well i must have been in many big contests because most were not held in high school stadiums. most had 1000's of people attending. yes some small venues had a generator but most were held in godd sized stadiums. baltimore memorial, hershey park, barnum festival, aquinas stadium, syracuse macarthur pk, even hamilton canada was a cfl stadium. as far as the musical arrangements , i don't know where you get the idea they were arranged to sound clean:eg hamburg kingsman, westhoreman bonnie scotts, erie thunderbirds, getsville suburban knights. they didn't sound clean to me. the horn arrangers back then had to convert all the misc from 3 valves to a valve & rotor which was difficult to do. today they just take the scores and copy them.guy's like hy drietzer, joe genero, corky fabrizio were great arrangers. don't take away there greatnes on a whim let's talk about percussion. 1st the snares in use today are very small and have no projection. they don't even sound like a snare. nobody is using a rudimental drumline anymore.......it's all riky tiky for lack of a better word. the rielly raider alumni drumline almost disbanded because the corps director wanted to drop rudimental drumming. he changed his mind after a lot of discussion. rudimental drumming is a very difficalt style of drumming......i know as i was a drummer for many years. i will say the drills being used today are a lot more complex today althought i did like when we started on the starting line and left via the finish line. and back then we did company fronts which is difficult . i don't use nastalgia glasses.....my memorie is very sharp thank you very much. just don't knock the old days. those were great times. ^OO^ ^OO^ ^OO^ ^OO^
  2. i don't see the execution anymore. it's a lot different when you have a judge standing right in front of you listening for any mistakes. it made horn & drumlines alot cleaner. they could check spacing and if your feet were the same as everyone else. also colr presentation showed respect to the flag & country. but like everything else today drum corps has gone to the dogs. and don't tell me there's more interest today. an average show in the 60's & 70's had 10,000-15,000 peole watching.
  3. in 1966 at the american legion nationals the skyliners did in fact start throwing sticks. joe genero kicked the golden drum he was so mad. the hurcs blocked the exit and played there show right there so nobo0dy could leave. everybody thought that there own corps had one. what a mess. i was in rochester crusaders & we were in between those corps. what a mess but it was fun. in 75 that was a true quote. joe genero said it. i laughed so hard. at the finals i explained to him what phoenix was. he was flabergasted. phoenix actually came in 4th in the prelims and beat the hurcs which is what prompted the quote.
  4. hi bill. i was in the drumline. i remember the coach doing that. remeber we took high execution drums at prelims. i think that all the corps went downhill that year. i really can't explain why but it just seemed like all the corps had execution problems. i mean it's just my opinion. how you doin anyway? i haven't seen you in 27 years. i live in ft. myers fl. now. been here for 20 years. been sick for about 10. bad heart.
  5. i marched with rochester crusaders. we competed at the 71 dream. i was awstruck by that show. i watched the skyliners and in my opinion THAT was the best performance ever that sky did. the horns were so hot i thought they were gonna melt. the drumline did an awsome job that day. i thoufht we did a great performane till i saw sky ....then i knew they would win. in all my years in drum corps i never saw sky do a show like that before or after. they were magnificent. that was wes myers 1st year as drum instrutor & believe me he made a huge difference. i don't know what got into sky that afternoon but i wish i had some of it.
  6. actually dca was formed because hawthorn was winning everything. everyone thought that they had all the judges in thier pocket. it took hawthorne 6 years to win dca. lefty was the brains behind the whole thing and i don't care what revisionist history says. I WAS THERE WHEN IT ALL HAPPENED. case in point in 1966 the cabs won the al championships but sky won dca. the al judges were different from dca judges.
  7. in 1971 dca added 5 points to the scores of every corps because the scores were low. the judging was a lot tougher in those days. in 1974 the night dca was held the weather was cold. i believe it affected the lips on the hornline. as for me being a drummer i know it affected the drumlines. all the drum scores were low. i remember in 1972 in chigago we....the crusaders.... won the al championship with a score of 82 something. they used real scoring. the next week in schenectady we came in 3rd wth an 88 somthing. if i remember the corps in 74 didn't actually get better as the season progessed they got worse........although nobody will admit it.
  8. i think it's a great idea. i just wonder why they don't include the 50's & 60"s. they had a great past back then. i remember competing against them back then. i guess drum corps could care less about those times. it's all about now. :(
  9. i guess i,m out of touch.....i live in fl.now 4 18yrs
  10. baltimore is a cool idea. camden yards would be good. i really think roosevelt stadium in jersey city would be great. rochester crusaders...1967-1972,1975-1977,1980
  11. if any one wants my opinion i think dca should try rochester or jersey city. they had the biggist crowds in rochester & roosevelt stadium in jersey. i think that dca in penn is gettig real stale. dca needs a change because they have been around the longest.
  12. there was a lot of anomosity after '72. bruni never could handle sucess in those days. i was one of those asked to leave. i almost joined phoenx. in '75 my buddy collin cambell had gone back to cru so i wen't back to be with him. cru is like the old grey knights........arrogant losers. phoenix was very good in '75. i remember at dca joe genero came to me & said " who the #### is phoenix " . so i told him the story by the way ........... hows it goin dave martin don incardona cru....'67-72, '75-77. 80
  13. it actually stared long before mt. carmal. it started in the late 60's in ithica ny. those were great exhibitions. in the last week of may :P crusaders......67-72, 75-77, 80
  14. well YOUR still a baby. that also dosen't mean your dads older
  15. the 71 dream was great. next to 72 dca it was sky's greatest performance. 71 dca...hollander stadium was also a great show.18,000 fans in the stands & they loved the crusaders. 72 ameican legion nationals in soldiers field in chi-town was special. being on that field with those majestic columns was really something........of course winning was nice. memorail stadium was a tough plce to march as was mcarther stadium in syracuse the nigt of69 american legion nationals in georga tech stadium when the yankee rebels won was incredible. the south really rose again that nite. when we took the field no one new we were there. the old mission drums shows in brighton mass were great early in the year shows......every one was there. i could go on & on but it would probly bore you all cause most of you were still in diapers but they were very special times for me....old military drum corp crusaders.......67-72, 75-77, 80
