  1. Another vote that a Black Shako with Tall Black plume would be more striking and powerful looking. (Along with the sunglasses if you really think you still need them. Make you look like Hollywood wantabes.) Just a PERSONAL opinion only. Still wishing you the best of luck though no matter what is or has been the decision that was made!

  6. In reply to puppet when he said that it didn't happen in 2002. The Chicago Royal-Air Reunion Corps did seven drum corp show performances over the course of the 2002 season including the DCI Midwest Championships in DeKalb, Illinois the DCI Championships at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin and the DCA Championships in Scranton, Pennsylvania and we marched a full Color Presentation number ("John Brown's Body") traditional old school style in every one to a standing ovation by the crowd and when I marched in the three drum corp shows that the Anaheim Kingsmen (KAC) did in 2007 including the DCI Championships in the Rose Bowl we also included a full traditional Color Presentation medley of songs "Exodus"/"American Salute"/and (from Berlios, "Symphonie Fantastique") "March to the Scaffold in our show and again to a standing ovation by the crowd at each and every one.
  7. Well at least we know they must have valid passports as this picture was taken at table rock on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
  8. Hey Ron, did I see you say you secretly wished that the old Spanish style California corps would have been as good as Hawthorne. Bet lost. Kind of to a certain extent anyways, in 1965 in Portland Oregon at the American Legion Nationals Senior contest pre-lims the "Joaquin Caballeros" beat the "Hawthorne Caballeros" in horns on one judges scoring sheet. Believe it or not!
  9. In that "Delta Thunderbirds" photo I'm on the left side somewhere. Cannot remember just where exactly. Funny how the drum corp circle goes around for so many of us eh Ron? Back in the day (early 60's) in Northern California drum corps. Remember many times marching against the likes of the "Richmond Hawks", the San Francisco "Knights of Cathay", the Santa Rosa "La Sabers" The Sacramento "Railey's Raiders, the Sacramento "Capitolers (all girl) etc. and of course the Senior Joaquin Caballeros corp. And all this was before there ever was a DCI or corps like the "Stockton Commadores" the "Santa Clara Vanguard" or the "Blue Devils". Did I mention the parades? And of course not to forget to mention EVERY year in the San Francisco "Chinese New Years Parade". Marching last year (2008) in that parade with the San Francisco "Renegades" was an experience that really brought back the memories. Where it all started for me Ron. How about telling us about some of the experiences from the Southern California obscure corp where you started? I guess we were all like the roots of what came later in California drum corps.....Oh the stories....If there is anyone else out there still that remembers or marched with any of these early Northern California drum corps how about chiming on with some of your recollections.
  10. Does anyone remember a junior corp the "Delta Thunderbirds" from Stockton, California early 1960's? Years before the "Commodores" of Stockton, California? Most of the corp went on into the "Joaquin Caballeros" Senior Corp that became state Senior champions for many years. Which brings up the question also does anyone remember the "Joaquin Caballeros" Senior Corp from Stockton, California?
  11. Anyone remember from the early sixties the "Delta Thunderbirds" from Stockton Calif.
  12. I don't know if you might remember Ron but how about the Sacramento all girl Capitolers run by Bonnie Dodge/McAdams. She had two brothers one name Steve and I'm sorry but I cannot recall the other ones name that when the Capitolers changed from Sr. corp to all girl status came down to Stockton and marched in the Joaquin Cabellaros
  13. Yes John Simpson was with The Bolling Air Force Base Corp from Washington D.C. Side one of the recording you mentioned was recorded on Memorial Day, May 30th, in New Haven Connecticut. Side two was recorded on the afternoon of the same day in Milford Connecticut. Both were recorded during exhibitions of the USAF Drum & Bugle Corp. The three soloist were John Simpson on Summertime, Tommy Martin in I loves you Porgy and Tonight - Maria and a duet with Tommy Martin and Dave Fite in St. Louis Blues - Wabash Blues.
  14. After tuning in late here and reading over the total content I just had to correct one thing and that is about who was the first corp to introduce multiple toned base drums? It was the Chicago Royal-Airs way back in the mid 1960's. Always so far ahead of their times in so many ways.....
  15. It might be a corp that pre-dated the Commodores named the Shipmates.
  16. The guy on the left looks kind of like "Moe " from the three stooges but what is he doing standing next to "Red Skeleton"?
  17. Just a guess for Mr. 234. Look at NanciD's avatar and if you know where it could originally be bought you might get his moniker. All aboard the night train of time. Starting out in Endicott, New York State then, Washington. D.C.,Chi Town, Baltimore,....Gettysburg. PA.........
  18. In response to the comment by JoeDz in regards to the Chicago Royal-Airs Alumni Corp color presentation flag code violation. I was an original Chicago Royal-Air from back in the sixties as well as an alumni corp member for all of the years that the Royal-Airs Alumni corp marched a field show. The flag code violation was recognized and known by the members of the Royal-Airs Alumni Corp. The lady who was carrying the American flag first started out in 1951 in drum corp on an American flag, later went on to march with the Norwood Park Imperials in the drum line as first snare from 1954 through 1956. Then marched from 2004 and 2005 with the Chicago Royal-Airs Alumni till the last camp of learning a field show in April of 2006 Now she is marching in the Anaheim Kingsmen Alumni corp in the honor guard since (including the Rose Bowl DCI performance in 2007) 2006 when we relocated to California. The point I'm trying to make is she has been around drum corp long enough to notice it right away and was well aware of the flag code violation from the moment she was told to do it at camp in the early part of the year. We all protested it to the drill instructor/drum major to no avail. We even brought it up to Ms. Jackie Lurye (daughter of our original founder/president Mr. Sie Lurye) the then corp director who would not deal with it and only said to take it back up with the drill arranger it was HIS final decision to make. The drill arranger was an original Chicago Royal-Air as well as Norwood Park Imperial I believe Chicago Vanguard and then finished off his junior corp career as drum major with the Sacramento Freelancers for many years. His remark to the many protest lodged (and I heard him personally say it as I was standing there at the time) was "Drum corp is all just Hollywood pageantry etc nowadays and we (meaning drum corps) do not have to any longer be concerned with those old rules and restrictions". "We can do what ever we want and THAT'S THAT!" Well this did not go well with the marching members but all the protest fell on deaf ears as I have mentioned. So please let anyone and everyone know that this is not now nor was the feeling of the MARCHING members of the corp and for them please except a most humble apology to ALL who had to witness it. And do not think that we the marching members did not also hear about it later at shows from the people in the stands. We most assurdly did! By the way the drill instructor/drum majors name was Mr. Paul Zimny brother of Mr. John Zimny the Chicago Royal-Airs Alumni Corp. horn instructor also an origional Chicago Royal-Air Alumni and both of the Sacramento Freelancers fame.
  19. Here are a few others that you can add to the list that were left out. Norwood Park Imperials (Chicago), Ardennes/Windy City Cadets (Chicago), St Gregory High School drum and bugle corp, (Chicago) Delta Thunderbirds (Stockton, Calif.) Joaquin Caballeros Sr. (Stockton, Calif.) Toronto "Signals" (Toronto, Canada), Canadian G.A.S. Ensemble (Toronto)
