  1. Lots of DCI fans have really enjoyed the Sacramento Mandarins in 2015. Some see a bright future for the corps, possibly contending for a finalist spot in the next few years. How have you enjoyed the Mandarins this year? Field Pass Podcast: Mandarins have 'The Edge' in 2015 Link to Field Pass: https://soundcloud.com/drum-corps-international/20150731-fieldpass
  2. Hello all, First, I apologize for two things, first is forgive me if I've started this thread in the wrong category on the forums, I'm very new here. Second, is forgive me if my questions sound ridiculous, I'm new to the world of percussion/corps drumlines. Anyway, I have some questions. I'm Greg, and I'm starting snare lessons in August. I recently purchased a high tension snare drum from Sound Percussion Labs. The snare sounds great, but doesn't produce the sound I'm looking for. Right now, the snare (out of the box) produces that "rat-a-tat" traditional snare sound. I, however, am searching for that "table top" or "formica" sound that every corps uses now. Not really using the "crank the heck out of the top head" technique, but still a table top corps sound. The snare is currently equipped with a Remo Falams II batter, and a Remo Ambassador Snare Side. It's just a basic clear ambassador. I've heard around that the best combo would be a Remo Black Max batter, and a Falams II snare side. However, since I have a Falams II on the batter already, how would it sound if I kept the current batter, but put a Falams II snare side on the bottom? I fully intend to replace both heads at some point, but can only purchase one at a time for now. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! ~KingGreGre

Have tried eBay for a long time, but no luck. If so ... please feel free to email me: mbdrums@aol.com. Many thanks! Mark

  5. We are looking for something that our son can use at college to practice/improve his mallet skills. He played vibes and marimbas in high school, but won't be doing college marching band. We've looked at malletKATs and xylosynths online, but so far haven't been able to actually try one out. We aren't even sure one of these is the right choice for a practice instrument since they don't exactly replicate the design and feel of a vibe or marimba (or so it appears). He obviously can't put a vibe or marimba in his dorm room, so.... any feedback or suggestions you can give us would be GREATLY appreciated! We're hoping to find someone our son can take lessons from when he's at college, but he needs something to practice on. His ultimate goal is to become good enough to make a world class drum corps.
  6. Percussionists: Please help an old brass player out. I'm normally a trombone/baritone instrumentalist and have played a lot of trumpet, also. I've had a little experience playing drums. I was a Junior in college and they needed 1 more snare (had 9, rank was for 10). I played one football season on snare and barely survived. The next 2 seasons I played bass drum -- really, a lot more fun. This was the old afterbeats/Sousa march style percussion, definitely not Drum Corps. So -- when I listen to a Corps' brass, I'm in familiar territory and think I could assess their ability fairly well. But, listening to today's Drum Corps style percussion, particularly the battery, all I hear is ratatatatatatatatatat (repeat as desired) flam Flam FLam FLAm FLAM FLAM FLAM FLAM ..... BOOM! Yet, here on DCP, there are folks who (allegedly) can pick out subtle difference between Corps X's and Corps Y's drum lines. I know I won't be that good, but I'd like to learn more. What do I listen for? What makes Corps X's battery better than Corp Y's? For those of you who play percussion and have heard the judges' tapes, what do they say pro and con? Inquiring minds want to know. Many thanks!

  12. Since we've had electronics and amplification around for several years, let's discuss it's use in 2014 shows and how effective it was. I figure we can catagorize it in the following uses: Amplifying / Altering traditional DCI accoustic sounds (brass, battery, pic) Amplifying / Altering live voice Use of prerecorded voice Use of prerecorded sound effects Use of synthesized traditional non-DCI instruments (piano, guitar, organ) Use of other traditional synth sounds (bass, synth strings) Any other uses?
