  2. November 25, 2014. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps’ Open House this past weekend was a tremendous success, and an exciting beginning for the corps’ 70th Anniversary season. After the Skyliners’ return to the field of DCA Competition last season, the corps is looking forward to continued growth and more opportunities to entertain its stalwart fans and alumni. Scott Carey, Brass Caption Head, assisted by Ryan Lamoreux, Assistant Brass Caption Head, led the brass instruction, supported by the 2015 Brass Staff. After warm-ups, the horn line worked through the beginning of “It Better Be Tonight”, from their 2015 show “Whatever Lola Wants.” Although composed for the 1963 film ‘The Pink Panther’, the Skyliners have chosen Michael Bublé’s treatment of this song, which is an adaptation of the musical arrangement made for the great songstress, Lena Horne. Percussion Caption Head Tom Siegfried and Percussion Arranger Eric Boylan, together with the Percussion staff, led the Percussion line through percussion warm-ups. They also embarked on music for “It Better Be Tonight”. The color guard members in attendance were led by Michele Fadden, Color Guard Caption Head, and the Color Guard Staff. They stretched, danced, spun and did jazz runs. Throughout the day Andrew Hayward, Visual Caption Head, and the Visual Staff visited each section to help focus on visual basics during sectionals. The Skyliners unveiled a new uniform for the 2015 season to the attendees of the Open House. SKY OPEN HOUSE VIDEO REPORT - http://youtu.be/1OsHCYo0PBQ The Skyliners thank everyone who attended today, everyone who helped set up or clean up for the Open House, those who baked or cooked, or helped in many ways to make it such a success. To those who were not able to attend due to school/family commitments, please mark the Skyliners’ next rehearsal on your schedule: SKYLINERS DECEMBER CAMP WEEKEND Dates/Times: Saturday, December 13th, 2014 ~ 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 P.M. 5. Drumline: A New Beat premiered tonight. The reviews on IMDB are scathing. Anyone watch it? (I am hesitant to watch it, because the Movie poster has a snare drummer using set sticks. If they can't get that right, then......)
  6. The Connecticut Hurricanes are pleased to announce their 2015 Percussion Caption Head. Mr. G. James Miller holds a Master of Science Degree from Full Sail University (2011), a Master of Arts Degree in Music from Columbia University Teachers College (1985), and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from William Paterson College (1983). From 1979 to 1982 he marched in the Crossmen’s snare line. In 2003, he was elected to the Crossmen Hall of Fame. Mark joined WGI Percussion in 1996, first as an adjudicator and then as the Percussion Educational Director in 1997-1998. Since 1999, he has been the Percussion Director and has been recognized as a driving force behind the significant growth of the indoor percussion activity. He has been a marching percussion artist and clinician for Zildjian cymbals since 1985. The Zildjian-Mark Thurston scholarship has been presented to WGI percussionists since 2010. He was elected to the WGI Hall of Fame in 2006. 11. The Skyliners’ 2015 Production is aptly named “Whatever Lola Wants”. The corps is well known for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, and their 70th Anniversary production will continue that tradition. Their opener, “Meglio Stasera” (known in English as “It Had Better Be Tonight”) is a 1963 pop song with music by Henry Mancini, Italian lyrics by Franco Migliacci and English lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was composed for the 1963 film ‘The Pink Panther’, where it was performed by Fran Jeffries. The Skyliners have chosen Michael Bublé’s treatment of this song, which was featured on his 2007 album, ‘Call Me Irresponsible’. Bublé's version is an adaptation of the musical arrangement made for the great songstress, Lena Horne. “Whatever Lola Wants” is another popular song, sometimes known as "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets". The music and words were written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the 1955 musical play, ‘#### Yankees’. The song was also used by Mario Lopez and his partner Karina Smirnoff in Season 3 of Dancing with the Stars, when their tango to it was voted the best celebrity dance ever by the judges. More recently, people may have heard this song in a 2011 Pepsi Commercial that featured Sofia Vergara and David Beckham. "Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones. The song was released as the “B” side of a single in September 1971, and frequent play by Disc Jockeys helped make it a breakthrough hit for Withers instead. It reached number six on the United States R & B Chart, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the time. This song won the Grammy for Best R & B Song in 1972. It has also been featured on popular, more recent, movies and TV Shows. Some of its appeal is that this song has been covered by many artists, in a variety of styles. The Skyliners are no strangers to the musical, ‘West Side Story’ (1957), and will bring a fresh take on the "Tonight Quintet". Music is by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim. ‘West Side Story’ was based on a conception of Jerome Robbins, who directed and choreographed the entire musical. The five parts of the quintet are sung by the Jets, the Sharks, Tony, Maria, and Anita in anticipation of the expected rumble that evening. With Bernstein’s genius, he begins the song with the parts sung in turn, and eventually the parts overlap to build to the final line, "Tonight," sung by the ensemble in individual parts. The plan to end the Skyliners’ show with the “Tonight Quintet” corresponds perfectly with the fact that this song also culminated in a climactic part of the play. How appropriate that the Skyliners would choose music from musicals, and diverse styles for their 2015 show! Come out to The Skyliners’ Open House to find out more, and be part of the initial performance of this production number: Date: Saturday, November 22, 2014 ~ 12:00 - 6:00 P.M. Location: Wyoming Valley West High School 150 Wadham Street, Plymouth, PA 18651 Directions: http://tinyurl.com/Wyoming-West-HS-Directions-Sky Keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.MarchSky.org, the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc and the Skyliners 2015 Interest Page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/712736618762089. 12. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce the appointment of the following 2015 design staff for the corps’ 70th Anniversary: Brass Arranger: Joey Pero; Drill Designer: Adam Burdett; and Percussion Arranger: Eric Boylan. The Skyliners welcome Joey Pero, Buglers Hall of Fame Member and virtuoso master of the trumpet in the jazz and classical genres, as Brass Arranger. Joey spent a couple of weekends in August working with the Skyliners brass staff and horn line. A highlight of Joey’s drum corps teaching, playing and writing career has surely been working with and inspiring performers, young and mature, in this arena. His passion, talent, flair, high energy performance approach, amazing technicality and the ability to share his expertise with students comes through wherever he teaches. Joey was the DCA Soprano Individual Champion in 2000, 2001 & 2002; DCA Best Soloist in 2002 and 2004; and won the DCA Best Showmanship Award in 2001. He has performed with drum corps such as the Genesee Quest, Ghost Riders, Empire Statesmen and the performance ensemble, The Edge. Indeed, his drum corps soloist debut at the age of 12 caused a sensation. He arranged music for and taught the Renegades. In addition to his classical trumpet training at Juilliard School at Lincoln Center in New York City, Joey Pero also counts music greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Ray Mase, and Charles Schlueter, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony, as his mentors. Maynard Ferguson hired him to play second chair on his Big Bop Nouveau Band Tour. Joey Pero’s performance venues include the Los Angeles Coliseum, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Las Vegas and stages around the world. Joey released his debut album “Resonance” in 2008 and has been hard at work on his next release. He returned to New York City over the summer to work on a Broadway project called “Bandstand”. According to a report by the New York Post’s Michael Riedel, “Broadway’s next hit could be ‘Bandstand’. His list of accomplishments and performance venues and successes would be too many to list here. For the Skyliners, historically known as a performance corps who always plays for the audience, Joey’s focus on entertainment and how to bring one’s performance to that next level, will provide an exciting and dynamic brass show. Adam Burdett is returning for his second year as Drill Designer, Drum Major, and Director of Recruiting. He is currently a music teacher in the Pittston Area School District, and has been for the past 12 years. He teaches the Senior High School Concert Band, 9th Grade General Music, and the 4th Grade Intermediate Center beginning band. Adam has been involved as a marching band instructor for the past 20 years, beginning as a percussion instructor upon graduation from High School in 1993. He was the band director of the Award Winning Pittston Area Marching Patriots from 2002-2010. During this time, Adam was also a co-music arranger from 2002-2007, Percussion Arranger in 2002, 2004-2010, and drill designer from 2008-2010. Under his direction, the Marching Patriots were the Cavalcade of Bands Independence Conference Champions from 2008-2010, and Tournament of Band Group 1 Atlantic Coast Champions in 2009. Adam is still the drill designer for the Pittston Area Marching Patriots, who won the Cavalcade of Bands Championship once again in 2011. Adam has been the drill designer for the East Stroudsburg North High School Marching Band since 2011. ESN was the winner of the Cavalcade of Bands Championship in 2012 and in 2013. He also designs drill for the Shikellamy High School Marching Braves, a Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Finalist in 2012 and for the Wyoming Area High School Marching Band in 2012, a TOB Atlantic Coast Finalist in 2012, as well as Pocono Mountain West, Lackawanna Trail, Montrose and Abington Heights. In addition to his responsibilities as a director and instructor, Adam is currently the Executive Vice-President of Cavalcade of Bands since 2009, and an adjudicator for Cavalcade of Bands since 2011. He is the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 9 Treasurer, a position he has held since 2008. Adam resides in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania with his lovely wife Becky and their three cats. Eric Boylan is also returning to the Skyliners as Percussion Arranger for his second year. He lives locally, and is currently the Band Director at Abington Heights. A Lebanon Valley College Music Education graduate, Eric performed professional compositions on marimba, vibraphone and drums. In addition to his experience as a Music Adjudicator with the National Judges Association (NJA), Eric was also the Marching Band Director at Pittson Area High school. Eric has worked as Indoor Percussion Arranger, Director, Consultant and Instructor; Percussion Arranger; Percussion Instructor; and Marching Band Instructor of various local school district programs and several competitive corps in Drum Corps Associates (DCA), such as the Connecticut Hurricanes, Fusion and Hawthorne Caballeros. Awards include the Pittson Area Marching Band being named the 2011 Cavalcade of Bands Independence Open Champions; winning 2010 DCA Class “A” Championship with Fusion; and Lake Lehman winning the 2009 Indoor Percussion (TIA) Championship, the 2007 Group 1 TOB Atlantic Coast Championship. We look forward to working with the design staff as we prepare for the 2015 DCA Season! The Skyliners’ Open House will take place: Date: Saturday, November 22, 2014 ~ 12:00 - 6:00 P.M. 16. For those of you who either don't know me or forget me (my bad; haven't been active on here for WAY too long), I'm a snare drummer. I'm planning on going for a corps for the 2015 season (still don't know which one yet). But I'm faced with the dreaded traditional grip left hand weakness. I'm right handed, so that doesn't help. I need to build some pretty major chops in all of my left hand, but I mainly want to focus on the index finger and building strength there. Does anybody have any tips/tricks/exercises etc. for building the left hand?

  22. August 9, 2014. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is scheduled to compete at the local Drum Corps Associates show in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 16th. The Skyliners are now based in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and rehearse at Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth, Pennsylvania. Therefore, the DCA show being held at Scranton High School Stadium, 63 Mike Munchak Drive in Scranton, is very much our “home show.” Further, the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps are proud to welcome Joey Pero, Buglers Hall of Fame Member and Trumpet Player Extraordinaire, to spend the upcoming Scranton, Pennsylvania weekend with them (August 16 – 17, 2014). We invite local band members, directors and staff members to come on out and see what has been happening in the Valley, and enjoy our 2014 show - “A New Dawn, a New Day”. We also look forward to seeing many New York Skyliner Alumni at this show. New York Skyliner Alumni continue to attend shows and march in the American Section to support the field corps, and the Skyliners have been warmly welcomed back by other DCA corps and administration as well. As the Skyliners’ first season back in competition comes to the mid-season, our return has been a great success in many ways. After their Bridgeport, Connecticut DCA performance, the Skyliners also competed at the July 19th Secaucus, New Jersey, the July 26th Downingtown, Pennsylvania and Lawrenceville Township, New Jersey shows. In addition to an entertaining performance which begins in traditional fashion on the starting line in a company front, and includes some traditional Skyliner moves and melodies, scores are improving as we expect they would. Plans for the 2015 DCA season are already underway as the Skyliners will continue building this legendary drum and bugle corps into the future! A 2015 Open House announcement should not be too far behind! To find out more about the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps, keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org, or the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc.
