Hawthorne Caballeros 2008 Open House

New Drum Major Announced!

Our 2008 Season had a great start with the wonderful turn-out and response to our November 25th Open House. Post 199 in Hawthorne, NJ is the place to start every season. To see new, old and prospective members experience the rich history, infamous Trophy Wall and blend of Caballeros from the competing and alumni corps is a Drum Corps Experience, and 2008 continued the excitement.

We were treated to a new Caballeros promotion video (click here to experience) and introduced to the 2008 Design Team and staff.

Dennis DeLucia, Caballeros Show Advisor, told the audience "It's so great to be back with the most legendary organization in drum corps after a 12-year absence. The staff has put together a show that will be exciting, challenging, entertaining and quintessential Caballero!"

Gary Gill, Staff Coordinator, Percussion Arranger and Caption Head said “the talent of the open house attendees appears to be at an all time high! What a great turn out for our 2008 Open House”.

Followed next by the big announcement – our new drum major (drum roll, please)...

Douglas Ferraro

Doug has been marching as a snare in the percussion section of the Caballeros since 2003 and plays the mellophone for the Latin Express. He is a graduate of Temple University and was a member of Temple’s marching band. He is currently the Director of Athletic Bands at Bensalem High School and a 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Snyder Middle School in Bensalem, PA. He is a 4-time TIA All-Chapter Indoor Drumline Champion and has taught at Hatboro-Horsham, Central Bucks West, Norristown and Haverford High Schools.

Doug is very proud to be chosen as the new Drum Major and said “I am honored and privileged to be named the new Head Drum Major for the Hawthorne Caballeros. I look forward to continuing the rich history and tradition of the Caballeros”.

Russ Batsch, former drum major of the competing corps and still a member of the 2008 Brass Staff, successfully turned over the reigns to Doug. The momentum and excitement that started with the announcement of our new drum major continued throughout the day as each section headed to Hawthorne High School to meet all our prospective new members and members returning for what promises to be another great Caballero competitive season.

I am still not sure how James Riley fit all those brass players on the auditorium stage. It was such a pleasure to hear the brass as they learned new warm-ups and the opening hit. They ended rehearsal learning and completing a run through of Malaguena – yes, Dennis has outdone himself – what an arrangement.

The percussion section took over the music room and several classrooms and spent the hours getting to know each other, hearing about the expectations of the drum staff and learning new percussion exercises. The percussion staff was very pleased with the experience level and dedication of the musicians that attended the open house.

The Colorguard and new guard staff got acquainted very quickly and managed to learn the work for the opening hit! AJ and the rest of the guard staff were prepared to have this section off and running at open house – and they did!

At the end of the day the brass and percussion sections demonstrated some results of their day with the colorguard cheering them on. You could feel every Caballero, past, present and future in the auditorium excited with the potential of the 2008 Season.

Frank Gerris, President and General Manager of the Hawthorne Caballeros was elated with Open House and said “the design and teaching staff are a great team and one of the strongest in Caballeros history. And the member turn-out for our 2008 season is very impressive. I have high expectations for another great year for the Caballeros”.

The Hawthorne Caballeros will conduct their first full camp weekend on Saturday, December 15th, 2007 at Pequannock High School in Pequannock, NJ and Sunday, December 16th at Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, NJ. For times and directions visit our website, www.cabs.org. The Caballeros welcome all prospective members and support staff.
