Two 80's recording questions

Recommended Posts

I've had a couple of questions for years and figure someone out there can illuminate me.

On the recordings from 1984, at about the 10 minute mark of Avant Garde's show from prelims - there sounds like " a commotion" on the field - I can't explain it any other way. Anyone know what happened - did the drum major fall off the podium??

Second question is at the end of the 86 Dutch Boy show - during the last few seconds of the 007 theme ending chords it sounds like an electronic device of some kind is used. It's pitch fits in perfectly with the chord - and hangs over after the corps is cut off for a couple of seconds - like someone didn't turn it off at the right time. Legal?? UFO?? Stadium sound system? Anyone??

We only marched 42 horns that year I believe so DCI set the mics to a more sensitive level to accomodate the smaller horn line. Only problem is that we were small in numbers but loud in volume. That sound you hear is our horn line blowing the mics and getting feedback.

I only have that recording on vinyl-if the moment of which you speak is the "cowbell/contra" section of the drum solo, it's just a yell time from the corps. Remember, 1984 was the first year corps were allowed to vocalize on the field without penalty. A lot of corps did it. We did it in our drum solo as well.

Went back and listened again and I don't think it is - it starts during a solo in the closer and lasts about 25 seconds. Really, it sounds like something dropped (metallic sound like some metal poles falling on the ground) - some staff members yelling (loud conversation) back and forth. Listen to your record when you can and clock it- check it starting at 10:00 min and see what you think. Thanks - just curious.

Wow - even more impressed now. Pretty cool to get it on the recordings though - thanks

Annette is correct, it's some kind of feedback. No amps back in those days!

DB '86 was a good little corps - clean, tight, and LOUD!

Fred O.

not to mention a nice drum book eh Fred? we all learned so much in 86. you and the rest of the drum staff enabled us to achieve so much. it was such a learning experience. it was nice seeing you last year at giant stadium Fred. you are one of the greats.

Heh - as much as your hornline deserves credit for soundpower, they were not the cause of this recording defect.

What you hear at the end of '86 Dutch Boy's show is a calibration tone, inadvertently switched on during their final push, and coincidentally in key with their closing music. The same thing happened to the Marauders that day, only in their case the tone was only imposed on one channel, and thus could be concealed by going monophonic at that spot.

Many people, upon hearing the recording error, were amazed, because they hadn't remembered the Marauders sounding anywhere near that good in 1986.

Bitter? Hells yeah.
