Teal Sound Forms Riptide Winter Ensemble

Recommended Posts

there was already a riptide indoor line that was originally affiliated with the Jersey Surf....

couldn't come up with a better name?

Thank you for your interest in Riptide.

The name RIPTIDE came about as the corps is based in Jacksonville and right on the Atlantic Ocean, which seems to have a lot of RIPTIDES this time of year! During a meeting of the minds putting this project together, there were reports being broadcast on the TV stations that beach goers should be aware of dangerous RIPTIDES at Jacksonville Beach .. then they went to the beach to talk to the roving reporter and he showed us a view of the beach and water, and guess what ?? The water there is a bright TEAL color , and it is that color for most of the year.. and we thought "BAM!!" how perfect... it all blended together!

Back to your observation..... Yes we did research the name and RIPTIDE came up with a lot of different musical ensembles., including at Sea World in San Diego... So we then went back and researched some more and some more. Checked copyrights, and all that stuff that will make your head spin...We did find a mention to Riptide Percussion and had to dig a few pages more to find out they were an indoor line.. I don't remember any of the publicity we saw on them that mentioned Jersey Surf..but seeing some of the staff name bios, knew they were from the Jersey area... s, but as you stated there WAS already..... , and it WAS affilitated...... , those are two key words... "WAS" ,.. so after thinking about connections ... we chose that name .. we LIKE it !!! :)

I hope we do as well as the original Riptide did, I think I remember seeing them and they were pretty good for those few short years they were around..... and I hope that this RIPTIDE can continue on for many years to come...

Hope we may see you at a show, and if there, stop by, and we'll introduce you to our RIPTIDE members ....

The old Riptide, if my information is correct, merged with another independent drumline from the Philly area to form United Percussion, which won WGI Open a few years ago and had a pretty successful debut in World last year.

this is a very cool development in the teal sound organization, and i'm sure your administration is very excited about this, but...

really? riptide? c'mon. get an original name.

THIS JUST IN. i'm starting a new drum and bugle corps on the east coast. we will be called THE 27TH LANCERS. no relation to the former drum and bugle corps from the east coast, also called the 27th lancers. we just liked the name.

The 27th Lancers had a significant impact on the entire drum corps community. I dont think the same can be said for the JS version of Riptide. Not a "rip" on the corps or their winter line, but I dont see how you can draw the parallel just because TS used this name for their winter percussion ensemble. I think its time to put this one to bed people. They chose the name, appear to be happy with it and might have success. For the sake of the entire drum corps community lets not tear eachother apart over a name. Besides- How many Kingsmen corps were there at one time or another?

That's very true, there has been plenty of name sharing over the years.

I think what's really important here is that another drumline has been put together to help further our activity and in a time when so many have fallen to the waste side to either budget cuts or loss of facilities.

That's always a good thing no matter what the name.

i just don't think it's very classy. at the very least, they should have contacted bob jacobs or woody or someone else who was involved in the original riptide to get the ok to use the name. maybe they did. but i doubt it. like i said, not a classy move in my eyes.

but hey, another indoor team is out there now, and that's cool.

Did speak with Bob about this and he said it was OK by him.

We apologize if we have offended anyone by the use of the Riptide name, but Jacksonville, FL is a coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean and does have some very strong Riptides, hence the use of the name. No one was trying to copy the name or image that Surf had when they used it.
