G-horns Posted January 30, 2009 Share Posted January 30, 2009 Since I'm going out to SF next Friday, I'd like to know about anyone's experience with taking a trumpet or soprano bugle on a plane as carry-on. The horn is in a classic Pro-Tec case and I'm not going to bring valve oil. I will leave the mouthpiece in the case unless someone tells me not to. So, what do you think??? 84BDsop Posted January 30, 2009 Share Posted January 30, 2009 I don't think the valve oil has been an issue for a year or so. I don't remember any issues in 04 or 06 when Dream flew back east. MiniSopGuy had an issue in 04...I think he's used his sop case as a bit of additional luggage and when it went through the X-ray it piqued some interest until he (carefully) opened it up. A company that makes hard plastic carry bags for a variety of purposes...archery, percusson, golf, etc. I actully see a lot of SKB bags used for fencing gear (My own bag is an SKB). JohnZ Posted January 30, 2009 Share Posted January 30, 2009 the classic Protec case will be more than sufficient to protect the horn. as for passing through security and airline carryon requirements, I've never seen any problems with musical instruments as long as they can be safely stored like any other carry on. they see plenty of musical instruments passing through the xray machines and hardly blink about them. the oil would be no big deal either as it probably meets the 3 oz. liquid maximum - that is, as long as it were in the obligatory plastic bag. as far as I know, mouthpieces are not on the 'potential weapons' list - yet. They said that i had to check it at the door of the plane and they let me watch the dudes with the earmuffs put it under the plane so that is also an option. Is this for the Renegades CNY parade? If so, I'm jealous. It's too late now, but when I go on vacation I pack a good pocket trumpet right in my luggage and check it through.
