Nex
From http://www.memphisdrumcorps.org/downloads/foodtruck.pdf Upon leaving the Dallas-Fort Worth area and arriving in Memphis, TN for the start of the 2009 DCI Tour, we noticed a problem with the tires of the Food Box Truck. The truck was on the verge of blow-out for one tire, and the other three were replaced as well as a precaution because of their condition. Once the truck was finally back on the road with their new tires, it started to overheat. The drivers pulled into a shop to get it checked out only to find out that the radiator had some damage, but they could not see what it was at that shop (they were not set up for such). We took the truck to another shop and was told this morning that the head gasket is blown and the motor is in dire shape. The cost to repair the truck is now more than the truck is worth, and even if it is repaired, it will be down for 2 weeks at a minimum. Since we use the truck for storage of food both perishable and non, this means we are shifting to contingency plans while we are looking for another truck. (Refrigerator and Deep Freezer run off the motor of the truck or are plugged into the wall at each housing site, causing some customization for standard box trucks to be able to work). The corps is still eating well thanks to volunteers and some empty bus bays to store food, but we are working hard to get a replacement situation on track. The biggest issue currently is freezer/refrigerator items which we are carrying in ice chests with dry ice currently. Since we do not have our normal storagecapacity, we will be increasing runs to Wal-Mart/Grocery Stores and can use thehelp of local folks while on tour to achieve these runs. Donations of Grocery Store and Gas Gift Cards. These are always welcome itemsaround Drum Corps, but especially now, it can ease the additional burden thecorps is having to bear. magicdirect
Rent a box truck for the summer. Buy a large chest freezer and use a generator, minor modification. Look for replacement vehicle in the off season. Buying another used vehicle without spending time using it and working on it may only put you in the same position you are in now with it broke down costing big money. Use your donation money to rent a truck, your food cost should be the same as what you had in your original budget. Best of luck and god bless those that have helped you in your need. JVN When I was on staff with St. John's a few years back and our food trailer was totaled in an accident, we did this and it worked well. Since the box truck was rented it came with roadside, insurance, and was new and running well. We loaded in a Chest freezer, fridge, bbq etc. - and had tables to prep either in the box or outside. Worked well for the last part of the tour. The following season - instead of replacing the food trailer, we rented a box truck and did the same thing for the entire summer. CT-Horn
Maybe some off season inspections and up keep could have avoided this too???
texmex
Maybe some off season inspections and up keep could have avoided this too??? Yes this will be fixed once the vehicles stay in Dallas after this summer. The vehicles were brought to D/FW right before tour but your concern was brought up and is being addressed by the admin to avoid this issue again. Pit_Girl_77
To add to the posted schedule, the corps will be in Houston July 10th-12th. This might be a good time to help the group out: (Gulf Coast Sound is taking care of Friday night's dinner, but there are a few more meals available!) CSGreen
Vehicles were inspected in Memphis before the trip down, and once they arrived in Fort Worth for the final may camp. It appears as though the food truck is going to be put to pasture. It did serve us well for a few years, but it is beyond repair (on a cost effective level). We have gotten a replacement situation for the summer, and am very greatful for all the true support we received, the leads, the contacts, and the handful of folks who helped and are planning to help with meals. A BIG thank you to Legends who provided and shared dinner with us at the Kingsport, TN show. They showed true drum corps hospitality, and both corps had a chance off the competitive field to get to know what drum corps is truly about. It was an incredible experience. I will say that it took our kids about 3 days to realize the food truck wasn't with us anymore. Our volunteers and staff did an amazing job of keeping the food at the same quality level, and in some ways increasing it. We (as all corps) could use additional help. So if you are in an area we are in and would like to help volunteer to cook, or provide a meal/snack/dessert/etc or simply donate to the corps, it is MUCH appreciated.
