Carolina Gold's New Corps Director

I have the pleasure of announcing our new Corps Director: Ms. Jessica Zakula.

Over the past 2 years Jessica has taken on roles in the organization which will

help her to have a successful transition to being Corps Director.

Welcome Aboard Jessica!

Jessica grew up in Walkertown, near Kernersville and graduated from East

Forsyth HS. While she was there, she was highly active in the music department

performing on a variety of instruments in concert band, jazz band & marching

band and finished out as Drum Major of the East Forsyth Marching Eagles.

She went on to attend UNC Greensboro and earn a Bachelor of Music: Instrumental

and Choral Education in 2005, while also being certified with a K-12 Music "A"

Licensure, North Carolina State Board of Education, 2005 as well as National

Education Technology Standards for Teachers, International Society for

Technology in Eduction, 2005. She was also a member of MENC, NCMEA, NEA, and

NCAE. While at UNCG, she took every opportunity to participate in musical

ensembles. Instrumentally she performed on various instruments in the UNCG Wind

Ensemble, Symphonic Band, University Band, Orchestra and Horn Ensemble.

She later switched to horn as her primary instrument to accommodate her education

degree. She also became a member of the Music Education Fraternity, Mu Phi

Epsilon.

She was a woodwind tech with the Northwest Guilford HS Marching Band,

Greensboro, NC in 2002, completed internships at Welborn Middle School in High

Point and Southeast Middle School in Greensboro in 2004 and went on to student

teach at Southwest Middle School in High Point in 2005. She also worked as a

counselor and rehearsal assistant at the UNCG Summer Music camp from 2003-2006.

Jessica started her teaching career in 2005 at Hoggard High School in

Wilmington, NC teaching a steller choral program with the honor's group claiming

Superior in Grade 6 music. She went on to take over the Music Program at West

Pender Middle School in Burgaw, NC in 2006, teaching band and chorus. She was

the Music Curriculum Coordinator for the county and assisted the music programs

at Pender High School and Topsail High School. While in Wilmington, she

participated in the orchestra for the Thalian Society musicals as well as the

UNC-W Wind Ensemble.

In 2007, Jessica moved back to the Triad area and started working for Carolina

Bank where she is Supervisor Certified and is in training for Consumer Lending

and Banking Management.

In 2008, she co-founded the Chris Holder Foundation, a non-profit organization

that supports and promotes the arts in the Triad. The foundation has run many

events and offers an annual scholarship for a senior in music at East Forsyth

High School. She is currently the Treasurer/Secretary.

She is a member of the Winston Salem Jaycees, Junior Chamber of Commerce

Chapter, that is highly involved in community service, leadership, social growth

and volunteer work, and is on the Holiday Parade committee for 2009.

I think Jessica is well qualified and an excellent choice for corps director of Gold, but we will miss her in the bari/euph section. :( With our staff from last year returning and a permanent home at Gateway Research Park... Gold is rebuilding and growing stronger in our new Piedmont Triad home. I can not wait until the first open house!

Hopefully we will see this North East corps come down to a few DCAS shows this season.
