Bighud
Well the Blue Devils have auditions in Alabama, Texas and So. Cal so I am not sure why it is a big deal that the Bluecoats are doing it as well.
ouooga
There's nothing wrong with this. Every corps has a right to recruit from wherever they would like. I'd feel the same if Pacific Crest or Blue Devils or anyone decided to hold an audition camp in Ohio. People from all over the country march with corps from all over the country. Auditioning for your regional corps often makes sense, but if a SoCal person chooses to audition for an Ohio based corps, it's more than likely because they felt some sort of connection with that corps. Not everyone is going to be happy marching with the nearest corps possible, and having the option to understand more about different corps gives members a greater chance of eventually marching with a corps that better fits their personality. azul
The staff mainly did this because there are many members this past year that were from california. (3 of the 4 quads, 1 snare, 2 basses and 4 horns). They also did it because the majority of the drum staff is from California and they plan on having percussion camps there so the drum staff and the drummers don't have to spend so much on travel. This was also better for the members/auditioners that were from new mexico, arizona, oregon, nevada, and washington. They are just trying to make things more affordable for their members.
