Many thanks to Drum Corps International for posting the following information about George and the event tomorrow to commemorate him. The UMass Minuteman Marching Band was one of many outstanding collegiate marching bands performing at the Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown on October 3. The link below contains a clip with some moving remarks by John Villela and Thom Hannum.

WOW,...............so cool,.............

It is so hard to put into a few words,...........but my most memerable moment of corps around 1980 was the Bucs finals performance that year,...............first time I ever had tickets near the 50,................seeing that corps opener drill swinging out of the corner, unbelievable stereo sound effects of the music,..............Great hornline, Awesome drumline......................but all stopped, I mean everything stopped silently during the grand pause in that show,............where that man brought that crowd into a complete frenzie,....................you call listen to the audio of that show and think all you want, but you had to be there,..............OMG that was awesome!

Sitting here glued to the computer is not what I had planned for this quiet fall Saturday, but I thank everyone at U Mass for the opportunity to share such a lovely event and to join in honoring George. I'm not sure who's luckier. Those of us who knew George and shared his loss with U Mass and his family or George himself - what an amazing legacy of love and memories. Somewhere he's smiling and beaming those blue eyes but just a blush of embarrassment in his red checks (or shine from his red hair) because our consummate showman was - in reality - a most humble man... the truly great ones usually were - and George Parks was indeed truly great.

I never had the opportunity of meeting George but just being a part of the same organization he gave his life to (The Reading Buccaneers) one can tell the impact he had on people. Singing the same corps song he sang over 30 years ago is a huge honor. I have the distinct pleasure of attending his Drum Major Academy in a few days and although he will not be there, I'm sure he will be there in spirit. I also have the opportunity to learn from one of his students which in turn gives me an insight of the affect he had on people. My only wish is to perform with a quarter of the pride and emotion he performed with on the podium.
