Sunrisers Present Their Percussion Team

The Long Island Sunrisers are proud to announce their talented Percussion Team for the 2013 season:

JOHN M. ODDO

Percussion Director

Inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in September of 2010, percussion arranger, instructor, clinician, and consultant, John Oddo has over 45 years of Drum Corps experience in producing outstanding marching percussion ensembles.

His career includes producing quality percussion programs along with many championship percussion titles for the following Drum Corps: Brigadiers, Syracuse NY – 5 times DCA World Champions, Hurricanes, CT, Skyliners, NY, Sunrisers, NY, Sky Ryders, Hutchinson Kansas – DCI finalist, Bengal Lancers, Trumbul CT - DCI Class A Champions, St. Ignatius All Girls – 5 time World Open Champions, 3 time DCI All Girl Champions, L.I. Grenadiers, Medford NY – Garden State Champions, NY Lancers, Bronx NY – Garden State Champions.

John is also the founder and Percussion Director of “RAGE”, L.I.’s first Independent Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble and is the Percussion Director for the Park City Pride Alumni drum corps from Bridgeport, CT. In addition, he is the arranger and instructor for several Long Island competitive Marching Bands.

Frank Mauriello

Percussion Caption Head

Frank Mauriello received his B.M. in Music Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and has performed in many ensembles such as, the C.W. Post Percussion Ensemble, the C.W. Post Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and the C.W. Post Orchestra. Frank achievements include the Coordinator of Music Scholarship Award.

Frank is the assistant director and the front ensemble arranger for “Rage”, L.I.’s first Independent Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble. In addition, he has arranged and instructed several competitive marching bands, such as Garden City High School, Roslyn High School, Eastport-South Manor High School, Seaford High School, Division Avenue High School, and the 2009 New York State Champions – Mineola High School.

Currently, Frank is the director of the Mineola High School Mustang Marching Band whose achievements have been noted throughout New York State, including performances at the Syracuse Carrier Dome in the NYSFBC Circuit and the Newsday Marching Band Festival. Mineola Mustangs performed at Rose Hall in Lincoln Center (Jazz at Lincoln Center) for a special event put on by Turner Broadcasting (TBS) for over 500 television executives, honoring the 20th Anniversary of the Cartoon Network.

Frank’s great aspiration is to combine his range of experience with his ability to be a kindhearted, enthusiastic, and intelligent teacher, who will make a positive contribution both musically and educationally.

Anthony M. Romeo II

Percussion Instructor

Anthony M. Romeo II, earned degrees of B.S. in Music Education and M.A. in Wind Conducting from Hofstra University, studying conducting with Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft.

He holds memberships in many national and countywide organizations and is presently on the executive board of SCMEA as one of the chairpersons for the Suffolk County Day of Percussion. Judging involvement consists of NYSSMA All-State Percussion, NYSSMA Major Organizations and past percussion judge for M.A.A. / E.M.B.A.

His teaching endeavors include; Wind bands, Percussion Ensembles, Chamber Ensembles, Pit Orchestras, Jazz bands, Indoor Drumlines and Competitive Marching Bands. He has been a Band Director since 1995, teaching two years in the Islip Public School District, five years at Lindenhurst High School, five years at Mineola High School and is presently a Director of Bands at Seaford High School. Past honors have been; guest conductor for the Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) All-County Band, and guest author in “The School Music News”.

Anthony has arranged and instructed long island high school bands at Lindenhurst, Levittown Division Avenue, Mineola, Seaford, Garden City, Roslyn and Clark High School in Nevada, Las Vegas, along with instructing and arranging for the Long Island Indoor Marching Percussion Group “Rage”.

In addition, he is a member of the Stik Figures Percussion ensemble and is endorsed by Grover Pro-Percussion, Silver Fox drum sticks, Mike Balter Mallets, and Deiner Bags.

Mark Carman

Percussion Instructor

Mark Carman began marching drum corps in 2006 with Vision Elite (DCI Division III). The following summer, he was the center snare for the Jersey Surf, and helped lead the corps to its first high percussion trophy, as well as the silver medal at the 2007 DCI Open Class World Championships. In 2008, Mark aged out with the Boston Crusaders, fulfilling his long held dream of performing in DCI Finals.

Mark was also the center snare for RAGE, Long Island's first indoor percussion ensemble, in 2003 and 2006, competing in the WGI, USBands, and MAC circuits. In 2009, he was the snare tech for the DCA Connecticut Hurricanes, and in 2012, Mark returned to RAGE to serve as the snare tech.

Mark is currently a high school math teacher on Long Island, where he also works with drumlines for several marching bands.

Justin Nickell

Percussion Instructor

Justin Nickell is a performer and instructor, with an intensive teaching schedule for with various private students, percussion ensembles, and multiple marching bands across Long Island. All of his percussion ensembles have had great success both locally and nationally.

Justin is a member of the 10-time World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps where he marched in the quadline in the 2012 season and will be completing his age-out this coming season with the Cadets. Prior to Marching with Cadets, Justin's drum corps career includes the 2009 and 2010 season with the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps tenorline. In 2011, he was a member of the DCI Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle corps.

Justin is the Quad Tech for Long Island’s “Rage” Independent Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble under the direction of John Oddo and is currently working on his college education.

Come on down and meet the staff at the Sunriser 2012 Open House. This event will be held on November 24th, 2012 at Brentwood High School's Sonderling Building, 2 Sixth Avenue. The time will be 11:00am until 6pm. All prospective members are asked to bring their instruments (if you own your own). You will be introduced to your staff professional so be ready to play or spin depending on your section. There will be a $20.00 registration fee (to be paid upon arrival). If you want to perform with a winning organization for 2012/2013, make sure you are there!

Come and meet the Sunrisers' new director Mr. David Abrams. All parents are also invited and are encouraged to do so.
